If Courtland Sutton is the closest receiver physically to Dez

King thinks it will be neither Sutton or the kid from Bama; but rather the speedster

The interesting thing is that Courtland Sutton looks the part of that lanky downfield strider, but it's actually his short area measurements that are off the charts. He ran an unheard of 6.57 3 cone - quicker than Julian Edelman even though Sutton's 5 inches taller and 25 pounds heavier. And I just saw something today where he was second among all WRs in the 10 yard split.

On paper at least, he's like some video game-ish mashup of Wes Welker in Dez Bryant's body. The tape doesn't always match up to those Combine drills, but the potential they point at is scary.

I have the same thought many have about Sutton. His stats are impressive but most of the catches I’ve seen him make are the contested type. He seems like Laquon Treadwell.

I’m not as excited with cone drills and all of that as some. Brice Butler looks amazing when you take his size and speed into consideration but real game action is a bit different.

Sutton will be a fine WR in this league and will a huge asset if you are willing to wait till his second or third year and don't expect too much as a rookie.

I have to give Dallas props for being smart enough to sign Allen Hurns because it gives them max flexibility in the draft. Hurns has played all three WR positions capably and given the way Dallas operates with rookies it seems almost a slam dunk that Hurns is the X on opening weekend. My personal thoughts on round 1 receivers......

X Receiver (Dez replacement)
Courtland Sutton:
Sutton most likely backs up Hurns until he shows that he has the offense down in practice. When he shows it then Hurns moves to the slot. He has the right attitude so it might be by mid-season. I can see why Dallas likes the kid.
2018 - X: Hurns, Z: Williams, Slot: Beasley
2019 - X: Sutton, Z: Williams, Slot: Hurns

Y Receiver (TWill replacement)
Calvin Ridley:
Ridley is not physical enough to line up on the LOC, so he would have to start his career as the "Z" receiver. If Dallas drafts Ridley then Williams might be traded this summer. Ridley can line up on day 1.
2018 - X: Hurns, Z: Ridley, Slot: Beasley
2019 - X: Draft, Z: Ridley, Slot: Hurns

Slot Receiver (Beasley replacement)
Moore:
Moore is physical enough to be an X, but has operated closer to the LOC in his college career. Moore has compared himself to Golden Tate and Jarvis Landry. He would eat into Beasley's reps from the first game, but I doubt JG would put him in as a starter right away. The offense at Maryland did not ask of Moore (Revolving door at QB, not because of Moore). Moore would most likely not be ready on day 1, but his skill set is off the charts for the slot. He would be an ideal receiver for Dak.
2018 - X: Hurns, Z: Williams, Slot: Beasley
2019 - X Draftee, Z: Hurns, Slot Moore

Here's the thing. All three of the guys are JG guys. They brought in Sutton at the end because they loved his attitude that much when they visited SMU. Each one of these guys upgrade the WR position, just in different spots.

then why would the Cowboys be interested? Didn't we already establish that a big receiver who can catch anything but doesn't run good routes is not a fit for this offense?
Sutton is nowhere near the prospect that Dez was. If you think Dez was a bad route runner coming out of the state of Oklahoma, Sutton had a more limited route tree. No way, I'm using a higher pick to take this guy! If he's there at 50, I could be interested but otherwise, no sale.

Why do people say Sutton runs bad routes?

Everyone loves DJ Moore for some reason but he runs the most gimmicky routes out of all these guys.

Sutton is just another young WR. He's not running routes like Ridley but he's also way more talented then Ridley and he's not 23 or 24 years old either.

Sutton makes the most sense for Dallas and his upside is high. He's more Brandon Marshall though I Think.

Do not want.

I'm not looking for a first round receiver anyway, but if they had to draft one, Sutton wouldn't be on my list. He's a lesser player than the one they just cut.

I completely agree but every WR in this draft is lesser. The Cowboys basically admitted that yesterday.

Sutton's a great 2nd round pick though.

I would take a 22 year old Dez without the mental problems on this team
Again, Sutton is not as polished a prospect as Dez was. Also not as physical a WR. I would agree that he is more like a poor man's Brandon Marshall, but the kid could easily bust. You don't draft a player like that in the middle of the 1st round. The bigger need is at LB and both Evans and Vander Esch are better prospects at a bigger position of need. Trust the tape more than the traits.

I honestly think that they can get what Dez had been giving them from Noah Brown. I'm not looking for another Dez myself.
