Rumor: Mortensen: Witten to retire **merged**

I hope the move isn't for job security. ESPN isn't too fond of that kinda thing anymore

witten is a great player and I have really enjoyed watching him play I don't blame him for taking the Monday night job I have nothing but respect for Jason witten the year he was drafted I really hoped that he would be drafted he was and I have enjoyed watching him play he will be missed

Funny how much Dak ruined this team. He got Romo , Dez cut and Witten knows he’s never going to win anything with Dak. If the cowboys give Dak a long term deal it will set our team back 5 years

This is outrageously misinformed. Dak has done nothing but perform extremely well, especially considering his value (not saying he's a franchise QB, but his performing well is not a negative).

1) Romo was at the tail end of his career and was rarely available due to injury. We would have been moving on within 1-3 years even if Dak was awful in 2016.
2) Witten was at the tail end of his career and a shell of his former all world self.
3) Dez was never the same after the string of injuries in 2015/2016 sapped his athleticism. Never dedicated himself to his craft to overcome the regression of his enormous physical gifts.

I'm struggling to comprehend how a success story as a 4th round QB has anything to do with any of the above.

Do we get hit with that dead money now?

He had no guaranteed money before the restructure.
Depends on when he pays back the 4.7m signing bonus

If he pays it back now all at once he will have no cap hit this year
If he pays is back yearly then we will have no cap hit this year and 2.36m next year as a June 1st retire
If he officially retires before June 1st and only pays back the 4.7m in 4 increments then he will have a cap hit of 3.5m this year and -1.17m the next 3 years

Wasn’t there going to be a “surprise cut” after the draft? Could it have been #82? Maybe this is the way to avoid the drama.

Uh, he couldn't have made this decision before the draft?
Yeah, and how about letting them know prior to FA or early into it? Maybe he's getting revenge for Dez's treatment (not really)!

Likely the Boys knew about this possibility more deeply than we did (hoping!)

I had this confirmed to me and it is true.

Crushing blow. One of the only things keeping me going to the stadium was wanting to see Witten's final year and his entire career live and in the building.

Why in the hell is his new employer blowing this up before he has the chance to talk to his owner? Witten has as much respect for what Booger has done for him and his family as any player that's ever played the game. Is a scoop so important that they would do this to one of their own now?

This is really poor form from the really poor form sports network.

How many times have you heard that over the years with this team?
The times we were good?

This changes nothing, and is actually a good thing. As much as I loved Witten, his time was up.
