Rumor: Mortensen: Witten to retire **merged**

Maybe the MNF offer just came up.
Could have, they just released the info that Favre failed his audition and the negotiating could have just concluded.

Witten is not doing anything TO the team, he's doing something FOR his own future. Some are acting like he's done the team wrong, I don't see that.

We'll have to agree to disagree on Dez. While Romo undoubtedly had better chemistry with him, this version of Dez is simply not the same, IMO. Even his hands are average to below now! Not something that typically you lose with age but he somehow has.

His hands went with his mental game that he lost because of his emotional issues. It is that simple. It is not a physical thing - it is just trying to hard.

Uh, he couldn't have made this decision before the draft?

Hey it may have been take the MNF job now or take your chances that the same/similar opportunity will be there later. If it was me and after 15 years I would take it now. Yes we as fans or the organization may feel the timing is wrong but he has to look out for his family. Good luck Witten, strike while the iron is hot.

Besides he gave them time to take one this draft.

Witten's best friends on the Cowboys were Romo, Murray, T Smith, Dez, Church, and Columbo.
I probably left someone out, but 5 of the 6 are gone.

Then his best buddy lands a monster TV gig and sees that life is going well in that transition.
So he tests the waters and ends up getting a huge offer himself.

Makes sense.

One of the greatest TE's to ever play the game. A third round pick who was a draft afterthought to one of the ironman of the league. A consummate character guy, tough as nails who gave it all every game.

You'll be missed, but father time comes for everyone. You have your health, now have your future.

We'll always have this.

And that "finalizing it with Booger" could just be fluff and he was already aware. Knowing prior to the draft wouldn't have made any difference in their needs in round 1.
Sure changes the tonight, unless Rico is further along than they say.

One of my all-time favorite players and an obvious first ballot Hall of Fame player. Thanks 82

Witten is too much of a company man for him to let this be a surprise to Jerry. In fact, if I were a tiny bit more cynical, I might think Jerry was behind the timing of the leak. Maybe he's thinking of a big trade to move up to the top of Rd. 2 to grab Gesicki and he wants this to provide justification in case he has to give up a little too much.

CBS is reporting that Witten is joining Monday Night Football. Couldn’t get the link to post.

I see nothing wrong with what Witten may be doing. Just happened to be poor timing probably from ESPN/MNF gig.

He's thought of retirement for a bit now, and has a good opportunity pop up for his life after playing football.

Best of luck #82

Exactly right. Seems sometimes fans forget that players have jobs and families like everyone else, and they are faced with the same kinds of decisions about careers and career changes and quality of life as everyone else. Most players don't get the opportunity to continue working in a job that provides a significant income after retirement from football, so the opportunity to get the MNF gig would have to be hard to ignore for a player at a point in his playing career that Witten is.
