Rumor: Mortensen: Witten to retire **merged**

Probably a combination of all those things, but I have to think that it's mostly that he doesn't think he can perform at the right level anymore.

The NFC is still garbage, the Cowboys have as good a shot as most everyone.
The NFC is garbage??? The NFC is probably better than either conference has been in YEARS. Many years. It's leaps and bounds better than the AFC.

Does this represent a time where Witten looked at himself in the mirror and felt he couldn't do it or help the team anymore. Or does he feel that that this team isn't anywhere close to a SB and given his age, it's time?

Either way, I'll be sad to see him go. This one probably hurts more than any other Cowboys players in the last several, several years. The guy gave everything, sure it was frustrating to see those 9 yard catches when we needed 11 yards but he did make some great plays over the years.

you should because Fisher is reporting high level people with Cowboys had no idea Witten was going to retire. Meanwhile radio host (Ben Rogers) knew for weeks. There is major disconnect with team & its players and its been going on for while now.

Imagine being the head coach that had these four guys on your team in their prime, getting only one playoff win out of them, and outlasting all of them with the organization:

The circus that is the Dallas Cowboys continues, fill a hole with s draft pick, open another up via a possible hall of fame retiring.....it just never ends with this team!

Something happened.

And it's not this ESPN gig.

That doesn't mean anything lol, the league has been AWFUL.

Probably a nice offer. Probably realized his time was getting close to the end and this was the perfect opportunity to move on. Probably realized this team wasn't a legit contender. Probably realized he had to spend another year under the guidance of Garrett.

He commented publicly post Packers playoff loss in 16-17 about retirement. However, the team came off a 13-3 season and there were no big gigs offered to him post NFL life.

Last year went below expectations and he got an offer of a cushy broadcasting job.
