Rumor: Mortensen: Witten to retire **merged**

Thanks for all the countless times you left us.... A Yard Short!!!

I hope someone engraved that on your bust in Canton. A Yard Short

Nothing more fitting

I refuse to believe Witten, the class act, betrayed the Cowboys by bailing on them this late in the process. Really surprising if true.

Blindsided? Somebody probably told Jason he was sharing snaps and that likely did it.

Didn't Stephen say just last week, why even look at TD in the draft? Because Witten wouldn't let them win, or something to that effect?

I think he thought it was great opportunity here and now and also knowing that he would prob retire after next year anyway and had no guarantee of a gig this caliber then so he took it. I don't think it is a statement that the team is not close or anything of the sort. Much like Romo, I am sure Witt feels he can still play at a high level but at the same time, he has to start thinking about life after the NFL. 15 years is an extremely long NFL career. So this is just the right opportunity at the right time.

hes a 36 year old 12 time probowler, from an individual persepective he has nothing to prove or accomplish....he now has an opportunity to take one of the best announcer gigs on the planet and set himself up for decades post football....he would be dumb to pass it up.

Additionally, hes 36, the average age of the team is in the mid 20s....at some point, you start to feel like the old guy in the room and not 100% fitting in....not saying thats why hes going but its got to factor in at some point. This isnt as much "his" team as the Romo years were and he can still gracefully ride off into the sunset right now...this is an amazing decision.

Which means the team did know he would possibly retire. All of you thinking the team was caught of guard I have some ocean front property here in Tennessee to sell you

Maybe, but Witten talked about retirement last year as well. They could have been covering their bases and giving him time to figure things out, out of respect.

Imagine being the head coach that had these four guys on your team in their prime, getting only one playoff win out of them, and outlasting all of them with the organization:

Witten saw all of the other three get unceremoniously dumped. Some fairly brutally with very inconvenient timing.
As someone who is one of the most loyal NFL players of all time, he CERTAINLY did not owe the Dallas FO anything more.

Good luck going forward for all involved.

This pretty much shoots down any possible Earl Thomas trade unless the Cowboys want to play with what they have at TE or try and replace Witten with a lower round pick. With Witten retiring we can’t afford to be trading away a 3rd round pick. We need our number 2 for a WR. We have no stability with our entire receiving corp right now. Hurns is working on a two-year deal. Thompson is working on a one-year deal. The 2018 season will be the last season year of Twill’s guaranteed money and Beasley’s contract will be up after the 2018 season.
Well then I'd reckon just by yer' calculations our receiver corps ducks are in a row & ready to roll into the 2018 offensive!,,, nothings guaranteeing three-quarters of the forum members on this site will be sucking air in 2019,,,,ruck up& stay focused.o_O

We're getting cap space out of this which is a good thing.

I think it has more to do with ABC's offer and that it wouldn't be waiting for him next year.
I get that but at times, he's hard to understand when he's talking to the camera at times. Incredibly insightful but I'd think he'd be far better at being a coach. He's no where near as bad as Emmitt was or maybe it's just me.
