I know this may be hard to believe but I think it is a very tough decision. Witt spent his entire life working to get to play in the NFL. He spent his time in the NFL, working to be the best (which he was imo). Giving up your life's work is not an easy decision. I doubt Witt cares about the money. He loves the game. He loves competing and he has a chance to do that, at least 1 more year. If he goes to ESPN, he will never play another down of football in his life. That has got to be a gut wrenching decision to make. I know it's easy for us to sit and say, take the money and run, but I just don't think it is that easy, not for a guy like JW. He has been blessed to live out his dream and play at an extremely high level among the best football players in the world. Whatever he decides, I will wish him well. But I can't fathom the decision he is faced with right now.

I agree. Over his career he has made 72 Million dollars. I don't think it will be all about the money. Again if he choose to hang them up I would not blame him but I think this is a hard decision for him.

Can anyone think of any other examples where a player under contract to a team has been offered a broadcasting job before retiring?

Going on a limb, but I assume certain player agents are looking for offers like this and Witten talked about retirement after the 2016 season.
Have to guess CBS/ESPN had good hunches(sources) that both players had the thought of retirement and they swooped in to seal the deal.

Report: ESPN offering Jason Witten $4-4.5 million per year

If Cowboys tight end Jason Witten plays football this year, he’ll earn a base salary of $1.05 million and up to $750,000 in per-game roster bonuses. If he accepts the pending offer from ESPN, he’ll make a lot more than that.

David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports that the pending Monday Night Football offer to Witten would pay $4-4.5 million per year.

If Witten ultimately decides to keep playing for less than half the amount he’d make by not playing, the potential alternatives could include Kurt Warner, Rex Ryan, Matt Hasselbeck, Booger McFarland, and Louis Riddick. According to the Washington Post, each of those four candidates has been considered for the job.

Whoever gets the gig will be paired with Joe Tessitore, the new play-by-play announcer. ESPN has been working for months to find a replacement for Jon Gruden, who left after nine years to become coach of the Raiders.

I swear. Sports writers don't know how to do math. Witten is scheduled to make $6.5M each year for the next 4 years if he stays with the Cowboys. He won't make more money per year working for ESPN in the short term.

The attraction of the ESPN gig is that he will have more years of making money. A 10 year broadcasting gig making $4M per year is $40M. Four more years of playing for the Cowboys is $26M.
