Better fit Dallas Goedert or Connor Williams?

We all remember this very forced and corny moment during the draft, where Eagles THINK they stole the Dallas Goedert from the Cowboys. All bias aside which player do you think is or would have been the better fit for the Cowboys?


Of course it came out that JJ said that they weren't going to go TE with Williams still on the board. Goedert highlights look really good, but I love that our O-line is very solid now...
 
Dallas Goedert! You can get a guard later in the draft, but a tight end compared to Jimmy Graham you don't often get later in the draft.
 
Most of us knew they were not taking a tight-end there. You don't spend months planning your draft board just to abandon it because of losing one player during or right before the draft.

I think it was more of a case that Philadelphia really wanted Geodert, and they were worried the Cowboys might draft him before they did, rather than them trying to impact the Cowboys draft.
 
I would have preferred Dallas Goedert but i understand that as long as we have this boring regime calling plays and running a 1992 offense that a receiving threat like Goedert may be wasted.

It seems like we prefer our TE's to run 8 yards, turn around, catch the ball and then fall down.

So if Zeke decided to retire right before the draft you wouldnt expect them to draft a RB? I guess you would rather roll with Rod Smith.
 
I think I heard Jerry say that they figured Williams would go to Chargers and were prepared to take Defensive Player. When Eagles traded up Williams came into play.

Goedert was never in play. Not our style of TE can't block

So thank you Eagles in helping Dallas get the steal of draft
 
Either fit perfectly. I had Goedert 35th and Williams 38th. So I don't think there's much difference in the quality of the player. Would have been nice to get a real TE. It's also nice to have a real 5th piece for the offensive line.

I didn't say I wouldn't expect them to draft a replacement. I said I wouldn't expect any team to alter their entire draft (which would happen if you deviate in the second round) after months of meticulous planning for one player they lose during or right before the draft. When teams (not just the Cowboys) have done that in the past, it has screwed up their entire draft plan.

That said, the running back is WAY more important to the Garrett/Linehan offensive scheme than a pass-catching tight-end. In the current Cowboys offensive scheme, the primary role of the tight-end is to block, not catch passes. Witten only caught as many as he did because he was one of the best ever at doing so. If/when Witten is gone, I expect the passes to tight-ends will drop considerably no matter who they draft, trade or sign. It's just not how Garrett/Linehan normally use their tight-ends in their system.
 
I’m going with Williams, since I was hoping for a dominant LG in the first three rounds. The way OL was flying off the board in the 2nd, I’m glad they didn’t wait any longer.
What sucks, in my mind, is the fact that last year’s draft was loaded with quality TE’s, yet the Cowboys couldn’t find the will to draft a single one.

I see a lot of folks calling him a pass catching tight end. He's 6 foot 5 260 pounds. Needless to say when he learns the blocking schemes blocking won't be a problem for a guy that big, and athletic. It just so happens he's an exceptional runner, and pass catcher.

That type of athlete would have been a serious weapon for Prescott, and now it's going to Wince.

I don't think anyone expected the Eagles to trade up for a tight end considering they already had one of the better tight ends in football, and I'm certainly not faulting our front office those things happen. I'm real happy with our pick because Dallas was no longer available.

Right. I just keep hearing from Eagles fans that they stole him from us or whatever. I just wanted some perspective.
