One big impression I came away with after watching the series “All or Nothing”, was how much natural leadership and coaching ability 2 former Cowboys and one current Cowboy have. I fully expect any of these guys would make great coaches someday if they chose to.

Here are the guys I think absolutely have a future in coaching:

The current Cowboy is LB Sean Lee. He is already like having a coach on the field. In one episode of “All or Nothing”, during one of the time frames he was injured, he is shown leading a film meeting. He has an incredible eye for detail and he commands the room with his presence. You can tell the other players greatly respect him. Sean Lee would make an excellent football coach at any level if ever chooses to pursue that.

The two former Cowboys that stood out were Orlando Scandrick and Jason Witten.

Scandy is shown in one meeting calling out his teammates for not giving maximum effort at all times. He is both eloquent and passionate. The room is quiet as he makes all his points with great intensity. He is a natural leader. Like Sean Lee, Scandy clearly had the respect of that room. He’s also a guy who would have no problem chewing out any player who was not playing hard.

Jason Witten is the other former Cowboy with an obvious coaching future. Like Scandy, on several occasions in “All or Nothing” he is shown making film room points and also motivational comments that you can tell the other players respect. Witten has said he wants to be a coach someday. I actually see him being a better coach than a broadcaster. We will see.

Being an effective coach whether at high school all the way up to the pros is never as easy as some people make it look. Effective coaching requires long hours of dedication to study, detail, organization, motivation and a willingness to both hold people accountable and offer encouragement. The Xs and Os are only a small part of it. One of my sons is a basketball coach at the high school level and I have great respect for how hard he works.

Any other former or current players you see as possible future coaches?

I always thought Darren Woodson would make a very good coach.

I don't know how Witten will do in the Broadcasting, but I think as well he would make a good coach, also Romo, he is great in Broadcasting but you would imagine all his insights into the game would make him a good coach as well. Maybee Dak as well, but he still has the chance for that success on the field as a player.

The greatness of a player doesn't always translate into a great coach.
In fact their superstar talent usually works against them because they think everyone can play up to their level.

I believe Danny White turned out to be a good coach in the Areana League.

romo

Romo's the obvious one. Maybe when his kids are older and he's had his fun in broadcasting. I'd love to see him back in Dallas at some point.

Unfortunately for professional football teams I think he's got a long career ahead of him in the booth.

Geez, the old "if he can scream, he's coaching material" angle.

Scandrick very well might make a good coach. Usually the profile is a smart player who worked hard to stay in the league for a while despite an average skill set. OScan certainly has all that. But yelling at people? That doesn't make you a good coach. Sometimes it just means that guys stop listening to you early on.

Romo is not the obvious one.

Look around the league. How many former star QBs or other super rich former players are coaching?

Travis Frederick seems to me the guy who might end up coaching.

I recall in 2013 when we signed Brian Waters. In one of the first interviews he gave he raved about how Fred was teaching him the blocking schemes. Fred was a rookie at the time.

When Free retired, he pointed to Fred and said "it is his line now."

Future coach right there.

The question was 'who could be great' and not 'who would likely be coaches one day.'

If we're talking about most-likely guys, it'd be guys like Kellen Moore, but that's a less interesting question, since most of the guys likely to be coaches weren't very good players in the first place, which is why they go into coaching instead of retiring on a pile of cash.

That said, I actually think Tony could be an exception to that rule. Mostly because he loves to compete so much and is not the kind of dude to relax. He'd also be really good at it and just has a mindset for both the play side and the preparation and improvement side. Plus, he's got that great relationship with Jerry and Stephen where you just know he could walk into a QB coach job for a year or two and go straight to OC. In 3-5 years he'd be getting HC offers. The long hours are only a negative right now because he's got young kids, but once they're teenagers, who knows?

Yeah. If he wants it, he does. I could see him getting bored with it after a decade or so, though. He's already at the point where he's calling Superbowls.

Just like I could see Aikman going into a front office here in the next few years.

Scandrick, what an awful choice, matey!

The fact you mention him and not D. Ware says a lot about your logic.
