Imagine this...a very strong rotational defensive end group; a top of the league set of linebackers; and a very strong secondary...defense?

My own optimism grows by the day. The Dallas defense is no longer talent deprived, especially if Woods and Price can combine to man that 1T role effectively.

I think that this team has the talent to be a legitimate top 5 defense. Not the smoke and mirrors 8th ranking they somehow managed last year, but truly a top 5 unit.

Taco is playing behind DLaw which is where he will likely play long-term.
RDE is still pretty wide open tho Crawford seems to have first shot at it on base downs.
Ideally they'd Gregory at RDE on passing downs with Taco or Crawford kicked inside to one 3T spot and Ward at the other.

Wouldn't that be great? Of course, the downside is that it would encourage Jerry to continue taking substantial risks with premium picks. Then again, dude's a gambler and is likely to continuing doing that anyway so might as well enjoy the payoff given that the costs are sunk.

If Jerry was still taking risks..........we'd have Paxton Lynch.

Ii's the pre-season yet...and for sure, they have some home grown talent back there. Just as with the overall talent, be patient!

Seriously though, have you noticed that every time they take on one of these "delicate" projects and make all these concessions, it never works out like it should. If you treat them oddly, they'll always be odd.

However giving the guy a star for the day just for actually being on the practice field and practicing 5 snaps or so.

I mean I know he has came a long way but frankly it is his job to be able to practice and not miss games over the years due to his own choices.

Not going to rag on the guy, at the same time not going to give him a "star for the day" just for actually starting to do his job.

I can see that. Despite some glowing reports, Anthony Brown looked like garbage out there. A clear liability. And all of the great plays in practice and camp don't mean a thing if you spit the bit when the lights come on.

Eh. I don't know that Lynch would have been considered a "risk" as a late first rounder. He hasn't lived up to that draft slot so far but I think there was general consensus in 2016 that he was a first round prospect.

In any case, I find it curious that both you and Stash think Jerry has been cured of his gambling ways. Even if that's true, my guess is that all it will take is for either or both of Jaylon or Gregory to yield a jackpot return in order for Jerry's interest in the long-shot with a huge payoff to be restored.

I'm chalking it up to a combination of things. Like you said, where he's come back from and a guy many had written off, coupled with a player who has looked good - special even - in the few times and opportunities they've seen him. From side work, to the small samples this year, all of the reports I've read and heard have been excellent.

Everything I've heard said he's been ready to go since he arrived and the team is simply being ultra conservative and patient with him. But he's been ready for more and chomping a team the bit.

I think the "stars" are for a multitude of factors.

A new feature on DallasCowboys.com this training camp is to hand out some Cowboys-themed “gold stars” after each padded practice here in Oxnard. Sunday had a wide range of players on both sides of the ball and even a coach made an appearance on the list.

David Helman: I never would’ve expected to be writing about Randy Gregory so soon, but here we are. The long-discussed, seldom-seen pass rusher mixed into practice today — and he looked pretty damn good. Gregory probably only got about five total reps working with the defense, and he was held out of pass rush drills. But he looked completely comfortable out there. In the final period of the day, he executed an absolutely beautiful twist stunt and had a free run at Dak Prescott. Had it been a real game, he might’ve notched a sack. Not a bad start at all.

Gotta love how they see one stunt work against 3rd teamers and all of a sudden he is looking incredible.

I think we've got two - possibly three - candidates for that right end position in Gregory and Armstrong, and possibly Tapper. And I've been encouraged to see that Armstrong and recently Gregory have actually gotten some time there with the 1's.

Tapper is done. I see Gregory, Taco, Armstrong. I think out of that bunch within a year we could expect to have a good DE on the other side of Lawrence.

I think the secondary is still going to be our weakness. And until Irving and a healthy Collins get back, DT is a weakness also.
