Player of the game for DAL? Take your pick between two much criticized early draft picks: Taco Charlton or Jaylon Smith.
Best cover player? Chido with the best CB big play we've seen in a while. Kid is a freak physically.
And it works in reverse too. Positions where we haven't drafted just aren't very good. The UDFA QBs look clearly well behind Dak. I mean WELLLLL behind. 3 QBs on roster? Sure, if you sign a vet back up. Otherwise, gross.
TE? Oh man we need a round 1 or 2 TE bad. I am very hopeful we only played so many TE heavy sets to get tape of those guys and decide who can go because it was not pretty. Forget comparing them to present day Witten, those dudes couldn't outperform present day Novacek. I am not a Rico fan but I'm but I'm about to board that bus if only because at least he offers upside and hope.
Back to the good:
DE's? All those draft picks playing together look scary good. Yearly investment on DL has shown up.
WR: Not having Beas or Austin took the sting out of the group but Gallup and TWill were your best WRs. Hopefully it is a deep group but it's not a star leaden group anymore. Maybe that it is a good thing but passes to these TEs are yuck so hopefully that's just for tape/evaluation purposes.
OL: Look those highly drafted OL again show the investment and the value. Those 4 bellcows are prizes to a man. Hopefully CWill can earn his way into that group but it;s clear he is going to have to earn it.
In many ways Will McClay is a super old school football guy and this is a super old school team. Soooo good in the trenches and the early game time of possession shows how they want to play football. Dominate the clock and score at the end of long time-comsuming drives. Force 3 and outs on defense. Rinse and repeat til the other team quits or time runs out.
If they do hoist a Lombardi in the next couple seasons make no mistake the guy who deserves the most credit is Will McClay.
