Might make the most sense if they are unable to determine his availability. Plus might give him the needed time to take care of himself.

He cannot start the season on PUP. A player has to be put on the PUP list at the start of camp to be eligible for stay on it during the season. He would have to be put on short-term IR so that we could bring him back, but I don't think we'd want to do that because he'd have to miss at least eight weeks.

Here's the PUP rules:

What is the PUP List?
Players who start the preseason on the PUP list may not practice until cleared by team medical personnel. They can attend team meetings and work out. Once cleared, they can return to the field.

If a player practices during training camp, they are not eligible for the PUP list. Instead, the team has to cut the player or put them on injured reserve.

If a player finishes preseason on the PUP list, they can be placed on the regular season PUP list.

Players on the PUP list may not practice or play the first six weeks of the season. After the sixth week, the player must be allowed to return to practice, placed on injured reserved or released within five weeks.

If the player returns to practice, the team has three weeks to decide to place him on the active roster or on the injured reserve list.

Players on the PUP list do not count aginst the 53-man roster, but do count against the 90-man roster limit.

Frederick is going to miss at least 8 weeks. Take that to the bank. Fortunately, Looney has had an excellent training camp, so while this is a let down, it's not a catastrophe. The BIGGER issue is finding another interior line backup capable of playing all three positions in case of another injury to Williams, Looney or Martin.

I'm thinking 6-8 weeks at a minimum.

Specialists feel that it will most likely be 4 months before he could be given clearance to return and then he would
have to train very hard, if possible, to play that demanding center position. The team might decide to IR Fred this year
to make sure he's able to return al all.

They are shooting for him starting the season, but it's hit or miss. I doubt they want to do anything on the roster side that keeps him out at this point. His future will really depend on the frequency, duration, and severity of flare ups. Those are all big unknowns right now.

I think a realistic goal is week 6 against Jacksonville on October 14th. That is when the meat of our schedule begins. I think the first 5 games (Car, NYG, Sea, Det, Hou) are all winnable without him. This would give him 2 months to get in game shape, which I think is realistic.

Many medical professionals, including our own resident doctor (@Doc50) have suggested that given Travis's age, physical condition, and stage it was caught, he could be recovered in a month. That would give him another month to regain his strength and get into game shape.

Will wait until we hear more. It could be he starts the season. It could be 4-6 weeks. Could be 4 months. Could be all year or never.

3 weeks till season starts. It maybe up to him and how he feels when he comes back. He said he has had 2 treatments and feels strong again.

If it’s just a few weeks then Looney plays.

Fredbeard is the best at what he does and is gonna be missed on this monster O-Line. But I wish him full health first.

From what I've read, that might not be the case. He could be back as early as a month from now, especially since they caught it in the early stages.

Feels crazy to throw a guy out there without a year to recover when this thing paralyes people who don’t play football for a living

This is all just guesswork, but I think the best case scenario is he's back by the end of September. Most likely return date is probably after the bye week.

If his case is more serious than we think we won't see him at all this year.

Paralysis happens if the disease reaches late stages without treatment and is allowed to progress uninhibited.

All indications so far is that this has been caught in it's early stages and treatment has already started. Combine that with his youth and fitness and it's likely this will allow him to return. It's just a question of when, not if.

A lot maybe up to him. It’s gonna be about how he feels. He said it felt like a stinger. But he has went through and had a good TC. No real signs of weakness. They caught it and he has had a few treatments and already feels strong. Who is to say that he doesn’t get treatments, go through a small period of practice and walk throughs and play. Or play as much as he can.

Is this like the flu or something where you have to fully heal? There is no cure. Does playing football like he has been or being active make it worse?

NO ONE KNOW EXACTLY how long TF will be out. The smart move would be to put him on IR.

8 weeks? So you know more than the leading most specialist saying someone in his shape and the stage it was caught would be a 4 week recovery?

Recovering from the illness is one thing, being ready to battle NFL defensive tackles is another. Even in the best case, which 4 weeks would be, GBS takes a toll on your body.
