Unveiling the new offense against unsuspecting Carolina

I don't think Dez was intentionally obstinate about refusing to run a certain route. I just believe that he was not capable or lazy minded to understand the concepts of route running. I truly believe that between his limited route tree and Wittens total lack of any sort of speed that this team was SEVERELY limited in what it could do offensively.

I think I read right up until the time they released him he was talking about working on his route running with some expert but hadn't done it while the other WRs had already been working with him.

There is a certain mystery about our offense this year. But the first mystery may be how well will they function to start the year without their Pro Bowl C, and three other starters from last year of varying degrees of effectiveness. I’m not saying it will be bad, but I am saying that none of us really know what this offense will be yet.

Regarding the running game, I’m always befuddled by fans who think all we have to do is “pound the rock” all day long and grind the opponent into submission as if we were Alabama, and the opponent of the week is Savanna State. NFL defenses are all talented. Some more than others, but being able to “dominate” an opponent at the LOS for 60 minutes is extremely difficult. Yes we have an enormously talented runner in Zeke but even he needs help.

The key to this offense gelling early IMO is going to hinge on how effective the passing game can be to start the season. Defenses will certainly put 8-9 in the box religiously to stop the run, and put their coverage people close to the Los to choke off the short routes until this offense can show the passing game is good enough to make defenses pay.

Gone are the days that a team could have a mediocre QB and make a run because there are no shutdown defenses, JAX and MIN still have to score.

This offense and team will go only as far as Dak can take them. It's going to be more on him this season than his previous two seasons. And any QB worth his salt would beg for the 8th man in the box and he's going to see more stunting with that than he has ever seen before. It took Romo years to learn to not get played on those 8th man stunts.

I think the most unfair comparison made with Dak to Romo is the D reading. Too many use Romo at the end of his career instead of the first 2-3 years and compare that to a 3rd year QB. It wasn't that long ago and well beyond his 3rd year that the Skins fooled him into only 13 rushing plays. The QB is basically alone against the DC and his moving parts and that looks a hell of a lot easier on the camera angles instead of on the field at full speed.

But it's also wrapped in a shroud of uncertainty for Carolina as well.

Carollina can play some defense, and last year's Cowboys offense would likely struggle to score more than 20 points against it. The Panthers can play you straight up, sit in zones, and fly to the short throws. That was Kryptonite for the Cowboy offense last season.

However, this isn't last year's Cowboys offense. Dallas showed almost nothing in preseason, vanilla-ing teams to death through a dreadfully boring 16 quarters of yuck. Basic, basic, basic. Not a hint of nuance or misdirection all August long.

Entirely by design. Carolina is left entirely to guess.

Gone are Witten and Dez. Here are Austin, Hurns, Gallup, Thompson, Olawale, 17 new tight ends, and an entirely new coaching staff under Linehan, along with a subtle hint from Mr. Jones to "make things more comfortable for Dak" by implementing more of what he did in college.

What's next is pure speculation. Including ours. The first couple of teams on the schedule get to find out first what's not on film yet.

Will it look wildly different? No, it'll still be Zeke and the freight-train running game carrying the water, but expect a lot of new looks, especially on 3rd downs. Austin will be all over the place. Look for a lot of underneath "picks" and quick outs disguised in all sorts of packages, along with some deep shots down the sideline when they can get single coverage with late safety help.

Will it work? Sure, I think it'll help quite a bit. Will it score more points? I have my doubts. Will it work against good defenses several games from now when it's all on film? That's where my darkest doubts lie.

Granted, it often takes a couple of weeks for NFL teams to settle in and find their rhythm, especially with so few reps in the preseason. So only so much can be expected or gleaned from the first game of the season.

But I believe the new-look Cowboys offense is hoping to steal some games early on the strength of their current anonymity. A good start to the season is vital with multiple tough games looming.

The Cowboys can weather the storm better with it's new-found defense. It's up to the offense to find a new stride, too, and as quickly as possible.

Carolina is a good test, and a great chance to take a big offensive step in the right direction.

If the OLine is great with a great rushing attack, the Cowboys have a great chance to win.

If the C-Will and Looney combo struggle, then winning is unlikely.

I hope we blitz if their injured starters on the O-line is unable to play. Give Cam no time to set his feet.

This would be a good way for our defence to play, and we have the talent finally to do it.

I would not expect much difference with the offense. Austin will have the Lucky Whitehead plays and maybe an extra play or so a game. They will wear Zeke into the ground and hope he can open things up like how he did as a rookie in the passing game. I am sure they will do more roll outs and Beasley will be his comfort blanket on third downs.

I have no idea how they move the ball on third and longs or what they do when teams try to remove Beasely as Dak's security blanket.

I think it is unwise to expect something drastically different than what we have seen. Sure there will be changes but all teams makes changes.

Dak had a propensity to overthrow last season. I'm hoping the Boys utilize Rico and Gallup a lot in the passing game out of the gate as they both have excellent reception range capabilities.

I'm cool with more (potential) Dak runs inside the 10, goal to go situations. That read option weapon is too good not to use when you need 7, not 3, and space is limited.

But I agree that we don't want to see him doing it 15-20 times a game, all over the field.

I have zero problem with them keeping a project like White in development, but under these circumstances with Kellen as your QB coach? there's very little experience and it means Dak can't get hurt
don't even want to discuss safety
if Dak runs the option, teams aren't stupid. they will definitely look for opportunities to blast Dak even if he doesn't keep the ball, they know we have no one behind him

Yes. It's one thing to say "I'm going to do better" and another thing to actually do beteter.

The offense is going to look exactly the same as it did last year.

Few shots down the field, risk-averse playcalling and too-little play action.

Dez wasn't coached.. That was a big problem. He was the one being hard on himself. Everyone else babied him. He needed someone to be hard on him. He didn't get it from the staff so he was way too hard on himself and it manifested into a loss of focus on the field.


He's only 29.. There is no way he has physically declined that much. He had an awful year last year and he still had 70 catches for 850ish yards and 6 TD's. With a horrible scheme and a QB that is not an artist with the football.

It's hard to buy into your school of thought based on how Dez reacted to a coach just saying "hey we need to play well, these guys are good". Dez' fragile ego couldn't even take that level of criticism.

Dez' stats have been artificially inflated for some time because we forced him the ball. I agree that the coaches enabled him, but I am presuming it was because that was about all they could do to deal with him.

A hard nosed coach would have run him totally off.

• Play the run
• Attack Conner Williams. They got plenty of tape showing that he lacks power
• Confuse looney with diff formations and attack Or "test" 'Martins knee.
• Do not double any receiver or tight end
• Make Dak beat ya with his wide receiving corp.
• don't worry about intermediate or deep passes everything is gonna be short and sweet
• Clap harder that Garrett thus confusing him
