Defensive Pass Rankings - Two ends of the spectrum

It's interesting that the Cowboys pass defense is ranked on opposite ends as it relates to key statistics:

• Cowboys are 8th best as measured by passing yards allowed with 208.5 per game
• Cowboys are tied as the 27th worst pass defense as measured by defensive passer rating at 105.9

I guess the conclusion here is that the pass defense overall is pretty good overall in coverage, however, has next to no play making capabilities as it relates to interceptions.

All preseason we hear that the defense will be a press cover with the new coach. I have seen more zone coverage so far. I think that is we did more press as we are told would happen, I believe we would be better though of. Just my 2 cents worth.

Well it doesn't help that they can block 4 with 5. Outside of Tank who really scares the opposing OL coach that he has to scheme really hard to negate them. Gregory, Charlton, Dorance, TCraw. As good as Tank has been he can get 3 sack games until January and it won't make a difference if no one else is a threat.

Generating turnovers, more specifically, interceptions. They have sucked at doing this. If they improve even slightly in that area, the rating allowed will go down accordingly.

We haven't had a good safety since Woodson excluding 1-yr of solid play from Hamlin.

It's been a common missing link.

To stress the importance of a good Safety, I had to go back to the 2007 Giants to find a super bowl team without a pro bowl, All Pro, or future HOF safety.

Other than Bryon Jones, none of the defensive backs have looked particularly good.

I still have high hopes for Chidobe, however, he has definitely been taking his lumps. I don't know what to think about Lewis anymore.

the major problem is the safeties are a non factor right now in generating or even close to making a big play,the outside CBs are excellent but the slot CBs are bad.The sad part is we are not going to improve our safety play unless Woods starts to turn it around.Heath should not be playing NFL football.

Quarterbacks need to be in a position to have to force the ball. When was the last time we had a sizable lead on an opponent?

The picture isn't at all clear about whose fault these numbers are. That being said, if I'm a coach, I'm telling my offense to take what the defense gives you and beat them in a game of inches, to focus on stopping the run on defense.

I think the conclusion is that they are a pretty good pass defense as long as the opposing QB isn't passing the ball.

Its about pressure on the QB and then getting interceptions. There is pressure but no turnovers. Because so far there are no playmakers.

Eli completed a ton of dinks and dunks that resulted in a relatively high passer rating but not many yards.

That's been the trend so far this year.

partially that but also that the team plays to shorten games.
yards for BOTH teams are vastly reduced.

cumulative stats will look for our defense and not good for our offense.
the fact Zeke leads the league is rushing is almost insane given how many fewer snaps our offense gets than say the LA Rams.

rating based stuff is hard to take too seriously in small doses. 1 INT would change it dramatically same way one good day by Stafford dragged it.

it is rather crazy to be sitting here at 2-2 when the offense was a dumpster fire through 3 weeks and we've also ranked 32nd in defensive turnovers.

Ultimately points allowed is far more important than either stat, and we are doing well in that category. Obviously there is a lot of season left though, so we really can't say how it will play out over time. I will say I'm optimistic though. If we get Irving back, and then with so many young players learning and getting more experience, there seems to be plenty of upside. Of course we also will play better offenses than some we have seen so far.

Depends if he goes up against Hopkins or not. Tough matchup to win.
