The Jags chose to avoid the scheme that kills us

In game two of the 2017 season, the Denver Broncos humbled our Cowboys using a defensive scheme that became the blueprint for stopping the Cowboys offense. What was the centerpiece of that scheme? Bracket coverage of Dak’s favorite target- Cole Beasley.

Since that day last September, most of our opponents noticed if you leave Beasley in single coverage, he will usually find a way to be open. So our opponents figured out if you load the box, double off Beasley and make the running game and short passing game more difficult, you then take away the effectiveness of play action and dare you to beat them with lesser weapons.

That scheme has been “the script” to beat us since Sept 2017. For some reason, the Jaguars yesterday did not use that scheme. Maybe they have a lot of faith in their vaunted defense’s ability to use single coverage on a slot receiver. Whatever they thought, it blew up in their faces.

I’m not taking anything away from the Cowboys win yesterday. It was a great win. But until this team shows they can win when teams take away Beasley and the short passing game, we may want to tap the brakes on this being a “breakthrough” win. Sometimes fans look at certain plays that worked one week and think they should work every week without realizing their success often depends on the scheme our opponents are running.

It will be very interesting to see what the deadskins do next week defensively. I expect they will try to take away Beasley and the short passing game and see if the Cowboys can counter. If Dak can continue to pressure defenses by being a running threat like he was yesterday, it will help.

The chess matches that occur in the NFL is one reason it remains interesting to me. Let’s hope the Cowboys can show us they can win regardless of defensive scheme.

Nice write-up. It was a very lucky break for us that Beasley was open the entire game, and, like you said - I will take it.

That game at Denver in Week 2 was odd last season, and one that I will never forget. We never recovered after Demarcus Lawrence got the leverage penalty on special teams.

Good observation.

They also didn't blitz very much, IIRC. We've had some issues picking up the blitz this year and they didn't even bother.

Not an Xs and Os guy here (like Garrett,) but my theory is the Jags defense is so good they play their game and let the chips fall as they may.

I do recall seeing Ramsey getting shook by Cole a couple times. They expect that not to happen.

Good observation. I think the jags just thought they could line line up and beat us physically. I kept waiting to see Jax apply more pressure on Dak but I think when he found some success running, the jags had to respect that and were reluctant to blitz.

I am happy for the win and surprised by how effective we were. Hope it is not Jax and Dak figuring out how to be effective, I also don’t think Jax was prepared for Dak running options

I've gotta see improvement in getting the ball to people not name Beasley. Unless the Oline can sustain lengthy blocks, I don't see it happening. Dak still gestates the ball longer than he should. GO COWBOYS!

This is the first game in awhile where I can remember Dak really gashing the opposition with dem wheels.

Hes not the most prolific passer, but if he runs with intent hes dangerous.

It was a nice win
They ran their D like they do each week and that allowed us to attack the weakness of their team
For us to continue to win we have to get other receivers involved some how because other teams will not play us the way the Jags did
The Texans showed as other teams have that you must take Beasley away
Getting Dak involved in the run game is also effective for this offense

My thoughts exactly.

The NFL knows about Dak's accuracy issues, his tendency to hold the ball too long, and reliance on the short passing game. They are well aware of weaknesses in the OL and inexperienced receivers, not to mention our coaches' history of poor adaptation.

I can't imagine why the Jags didn't choose to exploit those deficiencies; their HC and DC should be in hot water this morning.

Like your point here and agree, but I’m glad we weren’t really seeing Beasley run 2-3 yards in it was deeper routes.

Wow, some people can never be satisfied.

Well, the biggest difference from what I can see (because i haven't seen the whole game, just the highlights), is the offense really tried to duplicate a lot of what KC ran. They used interesting alignments, playaction, and misdirection. They used motion to their advantage too.

I had an interesting post last week about the lack of play action, I had mentioned motion and I've talked about misdirection before in the case of these new west-coast misdirection offenses that are taking over.

We incorporated some of these things, FINALLY, and we crushed Jacksonville. This has been my pet peeve the entire year outside of Detroit because we did implement some good things there and used a lot of play action (Dak was 7-10 with 2 TDs off play action against Detroit, two of our biggest gains against Houston off play action), and I've firmly believed if we did it we could beat anybody.

I got my hopes up after Detroit, where we then went into Houston and just stopped using most of it altogether outside of a few plays in the first half of that game.

We saw today what this offense can be just by implementing some basic things into the gameplan. I need to go back and watch the full game, but I can already tell they booked a bunch of KC principles for this game.

He's actually on to something here. Do you think the Commanders are just gonna sit back on Bease and not rush Dak? They will bracket Beasley and go after Dak. We should know all about this team on Sunday evening after the outcome of the game.

Shrewd points.
As others stated, they failed to blitz, & also they declined to maintain containment on the rollouts/bootlegs in the 1st half.
Keep Dak in the pocket, and he has troubles.

The Dallas defense, the incompetent Blake Bortles, combined with the stupidity of the Jags defense produced victory for Dallas.

I don’t understand why we can’t atleast try a couple of runs at the beginning of each game to keep defenses iff balance and giving more room to Zeke

You can rest assured that the Commanders will be bringing the heat and they will be doubling down on Beasley. It wont be a romp in the park like it was against the Jags. I really think the jags overlooked us. The Skins always play us tough and if Linehan dont come up with a game plan to get others involved and get the ball out of Dak hands quick it will be like watching the Houston Game all over again. Im not drining the Kool aide just yet.
