Tony Wise is actually the one that "built" that line. Although Tuinei, Newton, and Gogan were already on the team when Wise arrived with Jimmy Johnson.

I think Houck is here more to get Williams and LC back on track. The rest are vets that just need to be told by Columbo which technique to use.

Houck has been studying draft prospects since retiring so he’s familiar with both.

This is correct. He seems to be coveted by some as a position coach (he did recommend Travis Frederick) but when has he ever been a successful offensive coordinator since the Raiders' were blown out in the Super Bowl?

Hudson Houck took over from Tony Wise after Jimmy won first SB in '92.

All 3 were on Cowboys but not one of them excelled until Jimmy and his new coaching staff arrived in 1989.

The OL downright reeked until Emmitt was drafted in 1991.

Well Callahan was the reason why we did so well in 2014. Not Garrett or Linehan. He seems to be doing well in Washington. Compare that to a failure of a coach and OC we have now I would take Callahan any day over them.

Had nothing to do with Romo being able to stay healthy and Murray and Dez having career years. Let's give it all to Callahan who was stripped of play calling duties prior to the season. That's some rock solid logic.

I think this is less about the scheme than it is technique.

David Moore with the DMN writes that some players were not taking to the hand techniques he was teaching. Meanwhile, in Cincy, the Bengals have going from having the 20th-ranked line under Alexander last year to having the eighth-ranked line under our former line coach, Pollack.

Colombo was brought in as an assistant under Callahan so he's been schooled as a coach in both zone and man blocking. According to past articles on Houck, he stresses technique and effort, and the lineman having an overall understanding of what is going on and not just their assignment.

So, I don't think zone blocking is gone, and it's possible we might even use more of it. The main change will be in what's asked of the linemen techniquewise.

If the idea is the identity of the team is through the OL and the run game, this needs to be the direction.

If only this were true and not cast aside at the first sign of a challenge. Like trading away a first round pick because you think the issue is WR. I can promise you one thing. WR is not great but it is not the root cause of our issues. The root cause is our inability to run the ball and pass protect, especially on the road.

Turn overs on defense would also help.

Zone blocking works best with athletic linemen , which is what the Cowboys offensive line is now..................Man-to-man blocking is optimal when you have maulers like the Great Wall of Dallas from the '90's......................

But ever since teams in 2017 realized that Dez was no longer a threat have put more men in the box and still able to bracket Beasley. That hurt their ability to run the ball and then when they are in 3rd and long the defense can also pressure more, because again they don't see a deep threat.

2015 - 1890 yards with no QB to threaten the D
2016 - 2396 yards
2017 - 2170 yards - with our #1 suspended 6 games

Now where is the huge difference?
