Coach Lincoln Riley agrees to extension with Oklahoma

Putting NFL rumors to rest, Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley has agreed to a contract extension with the Sooners.

A source told ESPN that Riley would receive a significant raise. Riley was the 16th-highest-paid coach in college football this season.

Riley led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff in his first two seasons as head coach while mentoring Heisman Trophy winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray, the first quarterbacks from the same school to win the award in consecutive years.

Good for college football. I don't know why anyone would leave a big college job for the NFL. There is no longer much of a salary disparity between top NFL and college coaches.

Exactly. Much sweeter and stable gig with just as much if not more prestige if you hook up with a legacy program.

Because the NFL is the highest level of their profession. No college position can offer a chance to win a Super Bowl. If you're in College you're in the minor leagues. It's as simple as that.

College football fans would disagree. In the southeast, college football is more popular than the NFL by several orders of magnitude. So, just depends on who you ask. I don't think Lincoln Riley views a college national championship with any less reverence than a super bowl. Urban Myer never cared about super bowls. Harbaugh left the NFL for greener pastures at Michigan. Its a better job than most NFL gigs.

There is no disagreement. The highest level of football is the NFL. It's not an opinion. It's a fact. If you want to reach the top of your profession in football you must do it in the NFL.

Sure the NFL is the tops with the Superbowl being the top of the mountain.

But if you are good enough and want a similar salary with less stress in a smaller environment where you can become close to royalty or a deity...some just stick with College Coaching.

Coach Saban will go down as one of the best football coaches ever even though he completely spit the bit while with the dolphins and the browns did not win while he was with BB.

But some coaches have learned they can make as much money and fame while staying in College football.

Apparently, Lincoln Riley disagrees. lol . The NFL is the pinnacle for players not coaches. .

College or NFL for coaches used to be all about money, but now its more about personal preference. The money is the same. College coaches turn down the NFL all the time.

He didn't "spit the bit" in Miami or Cleveland. He quickly saw that you can't win in the NFL without a QB and he didn't have one in Miami............despite Jason Garret's best efforts. He was frustrated that he couldn't go out and get a QB. He's not a patient man. So, he returned to college where he could actually build the team he wanted. Seems to have worked out both professionally and financially.

The only way I would even consider taking an NFL head coaching job over a college job is if I coached for a Division II school.

Smart move by Riley.

No Lincoln Riley doesn't disagree. There is nothing to disagree on. The highest level of the sport of football is the NFL. I can't believe anyone would even try to dispute that. You can not succeed at the highest level as a football player or coach unless you are in the NFL. College is the minor leagues. It's a lower level of football. That's why so many great college players and coaches fail in the NFL. They can't take the next step because they aren't good enough.

Just because some people may prefer to stay in the minors doesn't make it more than it is. If Lincoln Riley ever takes an NFL job it won't be because he's not happy at Oklahoma. It'll be because he wants the challenge of succeeding at the top of his profession.

Of course the highest level of football is the NFL.
Goes without saying

The jobs are just different.
Right or wrong, many college coaches think that younger players will listen more and, if they want to influence their non football lives, have more abilty to do so.
Then there's the whole college atmosphere, etc that some prefer.

The downside is recruiting
Then again, the power programs get to pick their players vs having a draft and waiting their turn

It is not a "lower level" of football on a coaching level. Take Harbaugh for example. Great success in the NFL and none at Michigan in 4 seasons. His "superior" NFL coaching talent has not exactly overwhelmed college. How could that be? The only thing better about the NFL is the player talent, not the schemes and coaching.

Lincoln Riley stayed at OU b/c its a better job than anything the NFL has to offer. Thats his preference. It has nothing to do with lack of ambition. Urban Myer is the same. These guys don't see the NFL as the pinnacle of their profession.

College coaches tend to enjoy teaching the game. They are real coaches unlike a lot of NFL coaches who more like corporate managers. So, it really comes down to personal preference. Some guys like to teach young players the game and be campus rock stars. Others prefer to manage professional athletes and not deal with the NCAA and all its rules. The pay scales have evened out.

There has never been a more competitive coach than Urban Myer. Great example of a football coach who did not see the NFL as the "pinnacle" of his profession.

We actually have football fans who believe the NCAA is the top level of football.

Really take a moment to soak that in. We share a planet with these people.

Nope. The highest level is college. Winning a National Championship is the pinnacle. It's one thing to make it in the NFL, the real test is who can perform in....college.

Riley better start emphasizing defense a little more than just trying to out score everyone
