State of the Cowboys - Its a wrap edition

A few good points sprinkled in with the now usual homer crap by jt

Garrett is not "a great CEO HC", whatever that rubbish designation means anyway other than an attempt at absolving him off game day responsibility. Any HC that can't produce in 9 years is who he is.

Schultz needs to become a competent starter before he can be "trending toward a future probowler"

We do need a back up RB but it would be absolutely stupid to take your best offensive weapon and great blitz blocker off the field in Zeke (as you suggested)

Byron jones is a really good CB in this scheme but is not elite by any stretch. How many elite CBS have zero (yes zero) picks in their best season and 2 interceptions in their 4 year career? I'll wait for the answer. He is a product of better pressure up front. We better not pay him like an elite CB because he's not

Dak is an average QB who plays great at times when the chips are down. That's good but the problem is the team is often behind the 8 ball because of Daks ineffectiveness in the rest if the game. He also needs work on this fundamentals in a bad way but he has been unwilling or unable to do this in the last 2 off seasons.

DL is an issue because our best player continues to disappear in Nov/Dec and playoffs like this coaching staff. D Law if top10 DE but not top 5. Better not pay him like top 5. We need a 1T DT in the worst way

This team has several glaring needs. I won't talk about HC and QB because it will derail the thread even though those are the must pressing.

Needs are

1. Innovative and aggressive OC
2. QB coach who will actually teach Dak some fundamentals and reading defenses
3. 1T DT starter
4. FS starter
5. TE starter
6. PR/KR
7. Real back up RB

This team will never advance past the Division round as long as Garrett is HC.

Best we get is a wildcard win every couple of years.

Best for everybody to set their expectations accordingly. And Clappy doesn’t do back to back either, so next year is a non-playoff year.

The Rams sucked for 10 years, had a top 10 pick for 10 years, they were eventually going to be good, with all those picks.
And they had tons of resources after tanking so traded for WR1 Brandin Cooks and added a stud OT in FA.

They were definitely going to get it going at some point same as CLE will. The system is designed for teams to turn it around.

Lol..so sorry my intelligence can't be up to your standard. I know you are a member of the "process" club, so there is really no debating the future with you. Ever forward!!!
Critiquing on analysis basis...where's the discussion?

That's not a basis for a personality conflict. We all disagree about something...but the member you respond to here, has a strong record of observations and talking about what he does see. He by no account, is without valid perspectives on the Cowboys or football...just going by long established track record for my comment.

Perhaps, a little valid talk, will improve your own views and values of what is involved...it wouldn't hurt to listen as well.

Dallas played it's final game of the season in LA versus the NFC team everyone has been chasing since week 1 and fell as expected.

The game honestly felt like a 20 point whipping and only vastly improved red zone play by both DAL units kept it in realm of competitive.

The Rams were able to run it at will and that is still job 1.
If you can't stop the run, you can't stop the pass.
The Rams just took whatever they wanted basically every run play.

On the other hand DAL couldn't get Zeke going at all.
He was routinely hit in the back field and showed little of the star quality we are used to seeing.
Zeke has to get better as a receiver out of the backfield. DAL has to work to get him the ball where is comfortable on those passes or they have to go get a 3rd down back with speed who can spell Zeke in some useful way not as a very, very poor mans version of the same guy.

As the team post postmortems this season I think they can be very proud of the turn-around from 3-5 and the playoff experienced gained by so many young guys. DAL was one of the youngest teams in NFL history to win a playoff game.

What went right:
Richard came in and provided a boost to the young secondary. The new CB techniques he employed lifted Byron Jones to elite and while they didn't bring the turnovers you like the coverage was excellent most of the year. As we have seen with SEA CBs that leave the scheme can fall of the face of the earth quickly so DAL should continue to draft CBs and be less concerned about paying any of them franchise money.

Young guys galore stepped up and outperformed expectation. LVE was obviously special for a rookie LB. Schultz after looking like a cut seemed to get everything going in the direction of future Pro Bowler. He has to get bigger, stronger and slightly more polished but he looks natural as a receiver and he blocked well. Gallup looks like a star in the making. His route-running can be a bit suspect and some of those routes leave Dak looking foolish. They must be on the same page around depth and sight adjustments.

Dak rebounded from a very poor stretch of games to play at a very high level. Dallas has it's QB and he is a winner. At this point anyone complaining about Dak is just trolling. He outperformed guys on this team and guys we faced that all made more money and were drafted well ahead of him. He is going to be paid soon enough and I suspect he will make top 10 money. If he does the challenge will be even greater for him to get more out of a lesser roster tied up in franchise QB cap cash. Hopefully he and the team will opt for guaranteed money and success over more cap hit. Team success really adds to a players lifetime income beyond contract.

Young defense all in all was great. They were certainly not in LA but that team had 2 weeks to prepare for DAL and they simply were too much.

The Amari Cooper trade was huge and look great going forward. He is a legit WR1 who gets elite separation, makes plays after the catch and is still a young player. He had the physical tools to go top 5 in a draft and he has honed those skills.

OL Depth signings really helped this team. We lost a lot of games up front but kept the ship afloat at least. Played bullyball at times and were especially good at home where communication is much easier.

What went wrong:
DAL took the pre-season off. Dak is a gamer QB and he needs rel live game reps. Practice reps mean little to him and his early season game rust was painful to watch. Next year he needs at least 5-6 quarters worth of true reps with the 1st team group in preseason.

Dez/Witten needed to be replaced. BUT the replacements weren't brought in early enough. TE may well be fine next year and Amari has steadied the WR group but that receiving corps was in the bottom 2-3 before the trade.

Big misses: TWill, TFred and DI provided you a combined near zero. With TFred that's life and he should be counted on again next year. He's everything you want in a player. TWill and DI though should be gone. They gave this team nothing in a season where anything might've helped push it over the top. TWill playing at his best would have been better than Gallup this year. But he had GTD money and entered early retirement. DI has issues and it;s easy to judge form afar but soem guys just don't like footbal and all those signs are there with DI and have been since college thus how a Cali guy ended up at Iowa State then missed so many collegiate game. Trying to hold out hope of his talent is sending the team the wrong message.

What now:
Lacking an R1 draft pick you can't expect a starter to walk though the door. Will be interesting if Jerry sees the need to go FA to replicate that R1 hype and such. Lots of money available if he so chooses though the team has plenty of guys to pay internally.

This young team should improve and step forward in the off-season but it will remian imperfect. Jeff Heath has very much peaked and Xavier Woods and the other safeties are staring at very real ceilings. This team must have a better back up RB. Someone who is truly a threat in some aspect of the game.

DAL has a lot of FA on paper but only a few who move the needle; and almost surely, much of the money will go to guys that aren't yet FA. Figuring out what it takes to get DLaw, Zeke, Dak, Byron, Amari done is key. Secondary players like Beasley and DWilson will need to gauge league value and if they want to offer a home team discount to return to s young ascending team.

Coaching is gonna be a touchy subject. What Linehan did worked well enough to go 8-2 for the final 10 games and win a playoff game but it can be painful to watch at times. Kris Richard earned those HC interviews but the Rams game was a remainder that he was actually fired. His system does have some kryptonite out there. Jason Garrett has grown into a quite strong CEO type HC. Saban is his mentor and he seems a very similar guy. But that control freak, even-keeled stuff works a lot better in college. WE won;t even get into how much everyone wants to see a QB Coach that's not semi-related to Linehan.

Job 1 for DAL is ensure there is no step back. This team can't go on a yo-yo with these guys at their peaks. They are poised to be really good bot management and coaching must execute at high levels. The right guys must be resigned and the right bolstering via FA while the draft continues to produce. It is a very tall order but teams do not win Super Bowls on accident. They either sell out like Denver and win then eventually fall off a cliff or they build young, fast and lean then lose guys in FA. DAL must know what it is facing and manipulate it best possible. Sell these FA internally and league-wide on the Star power and financial opportunities that brings of being a Dallas Cowboy on a playoff team.

Dak must work hard this off-season. Ball security and timing with these WRs are key. He's also got to take care of his body in prep for long career with lots of hits. Fans want to see him run a lot more but that's not a great idea. He needs to continue to pick hit spots and reduce wear and tear. We saw what happened with Romo. We really could use Brees or Brady-like longevity. If a new OC coach comes in they need to be developing a system together. Use fresh wrinkles and league-wide innovation to their benefit but also hand Dak more say in what feels right. You didn't draft a 1st overall QB that can be QB robot. The guy you have is already risk averse and makes plays at key moments so you gotta hand him some easy stuff to get in the flow of games. Rubs and play action are huge for him.

The Draft:
Lacking an R1 you pretty much must go best available player. DAL targets needs and fits and I love that balanced versus BPA. But they can't forced a need pick.
Short wish list:
1. Safety
2. OL -always but DAL must get cap hit for OL down a good deal.
3. DL -always and with Rod here you should take those shots yearly in rounds 2 or 3.
4. RB -need a complement to Zeke given how much he rests now to stay fresh.
5. Slot WR - DAL had the right idea with Switzer they just weren't ready to give up on Bease yet. Go back to that well.
Great post, and thanks for the work. All in all, a good summation. And I'll take the minority position and say you're right on the TE. This is an extremely young team that overcame a lot of adversity (much of it self-made, of course, but that's the MO of a young team). After a 3-5 start, the team made great strides.

Still think the Rams performance had a lot to do with fatigue. That's not to say the Rams aren't the better team. They are. But the domination on both sides of the line of scrimmage screamed fatigue. Dallas put itself in a position of being forced to play 10 bear-playoff/playoff games. They were allowed and had one second half regular season stumble (Colts). Obviously the playoffs are all or nothing. Think they simply ran out of steam. Somewhat ironically, the same thing happened to the Colts.

I see on here, from various folks, the QB is below average to terrible, the RB is overrated, the OL is on a downhill slide, the receivers are pedestrian, the TEs are below average, the DL is bad, the CBs are overrated and the safeties are awful. Beyond that, the coaching is either mediocre or terrible. And I wonder -- how does such a terrible team win any games? Especially when it is one of the younger teams to win a playoff game?

Must be some kind of evil, black magic.

And they had tons of resources after tanking so traded for WR1 Brandin Cooks and added a stud OT in FA.

They were definitely going to get it going at some point same as CLE will. The system is designed for teams to turn it around.

Committing high cap money towards defensive tackle didn't hurt them as well. Three highly picked defensive tackles don't hurt, right now.

If you are pre-disposed to not enjoy my posts I struggle to understand why you'd waste your time reading them.
Needless to say people that announce such things are going on ignore.
If you won't save your own time I'll at least save mine.

Schultz comments that made someone cry:
Schultz after looking like a cut seemed to get everything going in the direction of future Pro Bowler. He has to get bigger, stronger and slightly more polished but he looks natural as a receiver and he blocked well.

Seriously? This comment bothered someone? Noting that the guy was tragically bad in camp and ended up on an insane bell curve upward toward Pro Bowl status?
To be clear Schultz ended the season with 7 starts(same as rookie Witten fwiw) and caught 70% of his targets. He looked natural and athletic in space --something we have never seen from say Rico Gathers.
He also developed as a blocker from being blown to smithereens by Jaylon Smith in camp into a dependable blocking TE. As he got snaps the blocking game seemed to improve.

Right now he is the best TE on the team for 2019 and a sure-fire starter. (Swain is a FA who may command more money than we want to pay for a maxed out TE)
Jarwin is a very good TE2 and receiving option who is under contract one more year and almost certianly will be retained the following year as well.

Schultz late season showing likely keeps DAL out of high TE market whereas it was likely target 1 for most fans the first half the season.

Coaching -- Again if you here to complain about that this isn't your thread. There are a million of them but this isn't it because Jason Garrett isn't being fired thus those discussions exist outside the realm of reality. I'd suggest those people are not very smart people who waste time complaining about the redhead. JG has won 2 division titles in 3 years and a playoff game this year with a young team and a young QB. He's probably a top 10 Coach in this league if a bottom 10 play caller.
Coordinators and other staff may be adjusted slightly but it seems likely they remain in the same core systems. That will be intriguing to watch as we go forward. Will they reverse field and rely less on the OL/Zeke combo or will they continue to try and fight the league wide trend to high powered passing attacks. --as a note here we didn't lose the passing attack versus LA. we lost the rushing attack on both sides of the ball. Defensively you'd really like to return the staff in tact wholly and allow these guys another off-season to gel.

LOL. So basically, you want people to ignore the outrageous things you say.

No, Jason Garrett is not a Top 10 coach.

No, Schultz isn't on some track to be a future pro-bowler. No, Schultz shouldn't prevent the Cowboys for looking for a legit #1 TE.

Those are fairly outrageous claims that you can't be surprised people call you out for them.

Their 2 highest 2018 cap hits are both 2019 free agents.
Suh was 1st overall cap hit and now is a FA.
Joyner is a starting FS.

They have 6 starters hitting FA.

LAR went all in on this year. They saw the chance and really went for it.
It has worked well thus far.

The same question will await them though that has hit Philly.
Do you have enough cash left to keep the team together and what does it look like once you pay your franchise QB.
Jared Goff will cost 30M per year as a former 1st overall that is now winning playoff games.

In Dallas they have long gambled on DTs.
And they've hit far more than they have missed.
If they made an error in 2018 it was assuming David Irving would bother himself to play.
A fully participating Irving and that is a top 10 DL.
AWoods gave them a top 10 NT for peanuts. He was a very small downgrade from Suh for 13.5M less. And you have him tied up for a while.

Lol..so sorry my intelligence can't be up to your standard. I know you are a member of the "process" club, so there is really no debating the future with you. Ever forward!!!

That "bright future" stuff just makes em feel better.

The Rams sucked for 10 years, had a top 10 pick for 10 years, they were eventually going to be good, with all those picks.

Naw, they had those picks with Fisher and scored 17 points a game, now they got a real coach and score 30 points a game and are in the NFCCG.

Great thread.

I'm personally proud of what the team did after 3-5. They lacked talent up and down on offense, but came up with a formula that won games andkept them in most others. The loss of Frederick was huge, and the OL was just a shade of what it was before, but it could hvae been worse. A better OL keeps the Rams off the field and probably gives the team a fighting chance against the rams.

The Defense was good but still needs to improve. More power on the DL would probbaly go a long way. I like Lawrence, Crawford, Collins and Gregory, but that's a pass rushing line and probably needs more beef against the better OL and running teams going forward. We'll need to keep getting LB depth and probably find better safety play.

I never really had us beating the rams and very nearly put money on the 7 pt line (big deal because I don't really gamble). There is a very good reason the Rams have been considered the offensive class of the NFC - because they are the best offense in the NFC< and I actually think they are better than KC on offense. Shoudl the Cowboys have played better on offense? Absolutely, and they should hvae been able to run better. But to lose to a team favored to win you would think that the Cowboys were the favorite based on this board's reaction. The Rams were a better team all. season. long.

You are right that with success comes long term wealth after the contract and that is why I hope Dak gives the Cowboys a team friendly deal when his contract is up. I would say the same thing Belchick told Brady: Do you want to be the highest paid player or paid well but have success and win lots of SB? I know Brady has a hot wife that makes more money than he does so he can do this but still. Also if the Cowboys are successful than endorsements will come along with the money for Dak. If they are not than they won’t.

This part keeps it from being apples to apples.

I like your snapshot for next year's tight end.

I want a fully healthy offensive line to return.

I want a return of the receivers, healthy again.

Give this fan, a dominant defensive tackle, free agency or via the draft; a very good addition at running back; a quality safety; and an upcoming linebacker.

Myself, I would invest in a draftable quarterback to give that position depth additionally.

The Rams offense beat up our defense and there is no getting around that. But the Cowboys earned their points too, with some good plays by Dak and the receivers. If the defense could have made one play at any time, this game could have been a nail biter. That's why that hands to the face call on Byron Jones was so big. If that doesn't get called, the Cowboys get the ball back on a punt and the Rams don't score a TD at that time.

Or consider this, if the holding on Taco Charlton gets called on the Rams last TD, it was 4th and 1 they move back 10 yards to make it 4th and 11 and they kick the FG. Then the final score is 26-22. The Rams only scored 10 points in the 2nd half as it was and 7 of them came on that play. I know people will argue but the Rams shut it down on offense in the second half. but the reality is, they didn't. Not until that last drive that ended with Goff running for a 1st down to seal the deal.

The first half was a blowout but the Cowboys did play better on offense in the 2nd half which helped to keep the Rams offense off the field.

This game was much closer than we think but because of the way the Rams were breaking off big chunks every time they ran the ball it left an impression it was more one-sided. I believe the Rams gained most of their yardage in the first half and also a big lead in TOP in the first half. After the Cowboys scored a TD on their first possession, for whatever reason Dak went ice cold. The offense was unable to hold the ball and keep the Rams offense off the field. Remember, Dak was missing wide open receivers for what would have been first down plays. This was always going to be the key in this game, to keep the ball away from the Ram high powered offense. The Rams dominated the 2nd quarter scoring 17 points to the Cowboys 0. After that it was a much more even game because the Cowboys offense got going and the defense played slightly better.

A large percentage of the fan base has bought into the process of mediocrity. Other coaches get axed two seasons after a Super Bowl if they don't produce. Here, a WC playoff win will extend you for another 5 years.

I don't think a large percentage of fans want Garrett extended. It's not the fans deciding to extend Garrett. I think the majority of fans would prefer a change.

In my opinion, people consistently calling for the coaching staff (beginning with Garrett) grossly overrate the talent on this roster.

Excellent corps and youth to build on, yes. Super Bowl talent? Nah.

I think you're right - add to the fact that the Cowboys scored 22 points without their typical running offense and there is some definite positive outlook there.

That said, be careful about giving the offense too much kudos. The offense has helped the defense all season long by running for 100+ and keeping TOP at least 51% in the Cowboys favor. Offense this game failed miserably in the running game and TOP which forced the defense to play against an offense designed around slow, meticulous drives.

The Rams running dominance just ate up tons of the clock. They didn't need many 3rd or 4th down conversions, due to making so much yardage on first and second downs. Dallas just wasn't able to stay at home and maintain pressures their own defense was designed to enhance.

By the second half, Dallas was forced to start throwing the ball...and they did, effectively at that point. Early conversions, a problem all season, was relevant.

Losing hurts and people are super emotional.

End of day DAL went 4-2 versus NFC playoff teams and won all the home games.
This team wasn't good enough to beat a 2 seed on the road much like SEA wasn't good enough to beat us at home.

DAL had to win the run game to beat LAR and that was clearly not gonna happen by drive 2-3.
DAL battled all day and just didn't get it done.

McVay and staff had a rested, fresh team and lots of time to prepare for DAL. As they had already prepared for and beaten SEA twice they likely prepared for DAL starting 2 weeks ago.
It showed.
