OK. If you really want a Super Bowl.
1. Hire Major Applewhite OC and Kendal Briles QB Coach. Applewhite has been under Mack Brown and Nick Saban (Garrett was under Saban).
2. Hire Art Briles as an offensive consultant. Jerry likes old folks (Kiffin and Marinelli). Art Briles will never get a US HC job and is currently in Italy. So he can keep eyes on Applewhite and his son. Why?
3. Bring in RGIII to compete with Dak. Competition is good and we failed to bring in competitors for Romo. Competition with RGIII having the Briles family overlook will either make Dak or break Dak.
4. Draft whatever DT slides - Rumor is that Ed Oliver and Dexter Lawrence will slide down draft boards. Draft whoever slides and don't worry about giving a 4th and 5th round pick to move up. Why?
5. Blake Jarwin, Schultz, and Rico Gathers got experience why waste it. You can draft a TE with the 3rd round pick.
6. Promote Kris Richard to DC and hire Dennis Thurman as DB coach/asst. HC. Thurman recurited Richard and coached with Marinelli at USC. However, he also knows 3-4 D and Buddy Ryan's 4-6 D. With Marinelli and Thurman to counsel Richard, Cowboys will have a no.1 D. When Richard leaves to be a HC, Thurman will be a perfect replacement.
7. Resign or Franchise tag Tank Lawrence, resign Tavon Austin, draft a slot WR, DB.

What exactly did Tavon Austin bring to the table that makes him deserving of a contract? I'd rather sign Beasley who aat least makes plays at critical times in the passing game.

Can’t argue with this.

Austin will be cheaper though

That is a big list.
I bet Father Christmas avoided you.

1. Hard pass on Major Applewhite. 0-3 in bowl games at Houston, he always came up small in the end in those games where he and opposing coaches had lots of time to prepare. On top of that, he got in trouble for an inappropriate relationship with a student when he was working at Texas, so he's one of those guys with zero self-control or good decision-making who is a lawsuit or scandal waiting to happen. No thanks. He's trash.

2. Briles is also trash and entirely unemployable. The introductory paragraph about him on his Wikipedia page right now literally uses the phrase "widespread gang rapes by multiple players." No thanks there either. Big fat "yikes."

3. RGIII hasn't posted a passer rating as high as the 80's since 2014. Passer rating in the low 70's last year in extended time, and was worse this year. I think he can't legitimately earn an NFL roster spot at this point. He's done. He's been done. No, he can't compete with Dak, and it's hilariously silly to suggest he's on that level. He'd struggle to compete with our mediocre backups who can't sniff Dak's level either. I'm all for upgrading the backup QB spot but there's better than RGIII sitting there unsigned right now on the street.

4. Now we're talking. Sure, draft a good DT who slides. Hopefully somebody actually does slide (as opposed to there being an early run on the position, causing them all to get picked earlier than they belonged as teams start to reach).

5. Agree. I'd still love to draft a nice prospect (assuming a nice one falls to us at a reasonable spot) and sign a solid veteran option, just to throw more options into the hopper. But I don't want the team to force it out of desperation as if they have nothing. Jarwin's not nothing after what he flashed late in the year. And Schultz isn't nothing either. Heck, I wouldn't have any problem bringing Gathers back again just as a Plan D lottery ticket who will likely get cut.

6. I like all that. Richard deserves a title bump. And I'd be all for adding elements of other defenses like the 46. So this all sounds good to me.

7. This all also sounds good. Though it depends how reasonable Tavon Austin's demands are. If we don't think he's good enough to replace Beasley as the slot receiver and be our new #3 (and I don't think that we do, because he's not enough of a technician), he's gonna need to accept a very modest offer to come back and just be a gadget 4th receiver and a return man. And I think there will be other teams who value the return game more than we do and offer him better money for that.

Yea. You lost credibility at RGIII. I don't pay as much attention to the idiosyncrasies of the NFL as many others do around here, but common sense lets me know that's a bad idea.

I’m not sold on Austin
I think he could be a guy you could scheme a few plays a game for but he’s didn’t show me anything to justify the cost

I'd be getting away from as many injury prone players as possible. Smith, Frederck and the like are must keep guys but if it's someone like Tavon that's enigmatic but unreliable health wise then I hope we walk away.

OK. If you really want a Super Bowl......start with a new OC and QB coach

1. Major Applewhite OC and Kendal Briles QB Coach....hell no to both...Major was a major dud in Houston
2. Hire Art Briles as an offensive consultant. Jerry likes old folks (Kiffin and Marinelli)......another huge Hell No. This is Jerry'd biggest problem, he keeps the geriatrics ward at AT&T Stadium up and running.
3. Bring in RGIII to compete with Dak. Competition is good and we failed to bring in competitors for Romo.....a 3rd big Hell No...why are yo in love with throwing out all tis Briles crap. NO And RG3 is done.

As mentioned above, you must be a Big 10 fan. I have a friend, everything Big 12, it is nauseating.

4. Draft whatever DT slides - Rumor is that Ed Oliver and Dexter Lawrence will slide down draft boards. Draft whoever slides and don't worry about giving a 4th and 5th round pick to move up. Why?.....on board with the DT pick, but not giving up a draft pick, we have only 6 picks, without a first, unless we get a 6th or 7th round comp pick for Benewikere if he met his incentives.

5. Blake Jarwin, Schultz, and Rico Gathers got experience why waste it. You can draft a TE with the 3rd round pick....Rico needs to go, Swaim is a FA, but with Swaim, Jarwin and Schultz, I think they did ok, as with a better OC they can use any of these 3. However if a sure fire can't miss TE is the BPA head and shoulders over a S or DT, then yes, draft a TE.

When Richard leaves to be a HC, Thurman will be a perfect replacement......
.....Don't we run the 4-3, not the 3-4. When Parcells switched us to the 3-4 it set us back, and Jerry felt he had to hire a 3-4 HC in Wade. Then when Garrett took over after the failed hiring of the spawn of Buddy in his son. Garrett went back to. the 4-3. That set this team back 10 years on defense.
Promote Richard though, a firm YES.

7. Resign or Franchise tag Tank Lawrence, resign Tavon Austin, draft a slot WR, DB......If Austin is resigned, which I think he should be, he could be the slot receiver. Sign Tank also. Draft S and DT.

Actually bringing in someone like Art Briles could be a brilliant move. He might be able to develop an offensive scheme to optimize Daks skill sets.
