Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence could be franchised again this offseason.

An impending free agent, Lawrence is coming off his second straight double-digit sack season. Franchising him in back to back years would be costly, but the Cowboys may not be able to extend him with Amari Cooper and Dak Prescott also due for new deals. Dallas has roughly $55 million in cap space this offseason.

This "article" seems like nothing but speculation.

Sure they could franchise him, but they are more likely to sign him.

The "article" leaves out that signing Cooper would actually probably lower his cap number for '19. They also leave out that there are several cuts that are likely to happen that will increase our cap and several more that could happen if we needed more room. Cap room is not an issue.

The only way he gets franchised again is he demands an astronomical amount.

Prescott and Cooper are not unrestricted free agents this year. We will have more than enough money to sign them, Elliott and Jones next year. I don’t know where these storries are coming from.

Could have payed half this man guarantee by now. 3 years in row he has produce. If you interested in someone else then get that person. But signing a productive FA cost more than in house talent. Every year the price go up. We could had DLaw cheaper going into 2018 than waiting for everyone to sign.

If you plan to extend Zeke it should be done now
The reason being age
You don’t want the guy getting the most carries every year being paid till he’s 30
Sign him now so the best years of his career are covered and you can get out at 28-29 yrs old
The odds of Zeke productive past 28 are slim

I don’t have a problem with that and he won’t. He gets paid very well. If he wants a bigger contract long term he has to bend. Back surgery and now shoulder surgery can be a red flag.

I think Lawrence has the right attitude about being franchised (or at least he did last year). There's no reason to balk at $20 million guaranteed. If he does get franchised again, he'll have made $37 million plus (guaranteed) in two years. Zach Martin's total guaranteed money on his six-year deal is $40 million. He's made $22 million of it so far ($20 million signing bonus) and will be at $32 million after this season unless we restructure.

Frankly, I'd want to be franchised every year of my career. You have to deal with the possibility of a career-ending injury or downgrade in play killing off your futures earning potential, but you can potentially make more if you could go three years at top level. The franchise salary your second year goes up 20 percent while it increases 44 percent your third year.

I've never understood why players get so mad at being tagged with it.

I had no problem with tag last year
You had health question a prior suspension and that’s protected the team and gave him the ability to prove himself
That’s the proper use of a tag. Now you pay him

From the players perspective there is huge risk with the tag. Mainly injury

Couldn't they franchise him until they come to terms on the long term deal?
I'm wondering if they could do this because they may not come to an agreement before the date to become a free agent, and so that no one else can make any offers

Injury is certainly the chief concern, but that concern exists to some extent with a long-term deal.

If someone with Martin's deal had a career-ending injury this summer, he'd cap out at $40 million (assuming his base salary the first two years were part of the guaranteed money). The franchise tag for Lawrence this year would mean he'd cap out at $37 million plus no matter what.

If Lawrence had reached a long-term deal last year, he'd probably be making less than Martin. If he reaches one this year, he's probably going to end up making more than Martin since 2018 ($17 million franchise for 2018 and bonus/guarantee for 2019 and beyond).

I'd be curious to see how many franchised players did not receive a big contract the next year. I'd bet the percentages are low enough that it's worth betting on yourself to maximize your earning potential.

Yes, the team and player can negotiate while he's tagged.

I believe you can, pretty sure they did that to Dez Bryant.
