Jerry's coaching conundrum has the Cowboys cornered

Like most all of you, I've seen enough of this stale one-act play. Garrett did some important things here, but that was long ago, and it's definitely time for a new coach and approach.

But who? And how?

All of Jerry's GM sins are haunting him right now, and the Cowboys are a cloudy mess. What are the Cowboys wanting to be exactly? And who would really want to come here of any repute?

Some say he wants Sean Payton, and that makes enough sense with their history. But I just don't see how that would work.

Beyond just the contractual aspect of this, what has Payton ever done without Drew Brees? He got fired as the Giants' offensive coordinator. And just how is he going to institute his offense here with Dak Prescott? That offensive style just doesn't suit Dak's strengths and weaknesses.

Much of the same can be said for Josh McDaniels, or Lincoln Riley, or any other young passing guru coach out there. That's the flavor of the day, but just where is the fit for a coach like that in Dallas right now?

The eyes say this is a run-oriented, defensive football team, which is the opposite of what the Sean McVay crazed league is heading toward. That's perfectly fine, but it doesn't warrant the type of coach that everybody is clamoring for.

Rather than trying to incorporate things this offense isn't suited to do with Dak, wouldn't it be smarter to go after a more defensive-minded head coach in the traditional Parcells or Jimmy model?

That's what Jerry has hoped Garrett would become. Garrett takes that type of approach, but it's not amounting to anything beyond moderate regular season success. It works much of the time, but when a game gets sideways and the Cowboys have change up, most of the time they just can't.

A change of scheme is a good idea if you can do it. Maybe this team can make that change, and maybe it can't.

I think Jerry is afraid to take that leap of faith on a big-money new coach, and I think he's afraid to hear the truth from that new coach when he gets here. Money owed means power, and Jerry doesn't like handing that over to anyone. So he does nothing. Again.

Jerry, Garrett, and Dak are forever intertwined. They will win or go down together.

If Jerry capitulates and brings in a new guy, it won't be his idea. He hates that. It means WE were right, and even in grand victory, it will be a bitter pill. His way didn't work. Ours did.

That's like Jimmy Johnson all over again, and it would gnaw him to his core.

I'd counter the argument with this:

Who was actually available this year?

Based on the hires made, I'd say not much.

So, if Payton wasn't available, or more likely decided to stay another year in New Orleans as long as Brees is there, there isn't an option available that would be a big improvement.

Next year? That might all change. Payton could be available, Riley could be ready, or Richard might be a viable, in-house candidate.

I just don't think there was much of an opportunity for a true upgrade this year, as sad as that is to say.

The Rams offense is run oriented. They run the ball just as much or more than the Cowboys do. It's just that when they do pass, their systems and schemes are far superior and more effective than the stale mess in Dallas.
Same goes with the Saints who actually run the ball more than Dallas does.

We finished in the top 8 teams in the NFL this year. We have won the NFC East 3 out of the last 5 years.

We also have the 2nd youngest team in the NFL right now.

Lets stop beginning every story with how much of a mess our organization is just to give our threads more relevance.

We are not really in that bad of shape.

Insert Drew Brees as our QB and watch what happens when defenses ignore our passing game and stack the box.

You would see similar offense to what we had in 2014 under Tony Romo.

I didn't realize that winning the NFC East was the end goal. I could have swore it was reaching and winning the SB at some point. Silly me. Sign Garrett to a lifetime contract! Mediocrity rules! Regular season division champs isn't enough and that seems to be Garrett's coaching ceiling. It's time to move on.

The eyes say this is a run-oriented, defensive football team, which is the opposite of what the Sean McVay crazed league is heading toward.

Hmmm... how so? McVay's offense ran it once more per game than we did... and their defense isn't chopped liver.

The main distinction I see is that McVay is this day's Tom Landry, with the multiple pre-snap looks they try to give the defense to contend with, and adds to that an extra dose of misdirection options immediately after the snap. It's a matter of creativity, and it only comes with being able to have a reasoned faith in your offensive line.

To the point of the OP...

We also disagree on the premise that JJ wishes he had some other option than Red at this point in time.

The Jerry I listen to and the words he chooses and the metacommunication he employs all tells me that he genuinely believes Red has all the qualities in a head coach you can want... and it's not even like you see any difference in how players talk about Garrett... they, too, seem bought-in.

Rationally, Garrett is going to get another year, no matter any fan's opinion of whether he deserves it or not.

This post is a year premature, imo. You can legitimately evaluate whether Jerry's in a corner or not then.

Who said it was end goal? Nobody did. The point was that our team is not in a terrible mess.

The team will be predicted to do well next season.

Like all teams we have areas we need to improve but we are not "a mess."

Otoh... we do agree on this... fwiw.

At least, the Jerry and Garrett part... those two are on the cusp of some big decisions about their football futures... when will Jerry step back and have Stephen take the wheel... if Red continues here, or not.

Dak?

Dak's going to be around for awhile. I'd leave him out of that equation in terms of "forever intertwined."

Depends on whether you think this is a team building toward a ring or not and that seems to be the key to most posters.

What you write is fact and good enough for me because I am not SB or bust as far as calling a season a good one. But, turning a 3-5 team into a 1 playoff win team doesn't seem to impress most of the posters here and each season is marred by how far the team didn't get.

If they'd beaten LA but lost to NO in the NFC champs game, there would be almost as much negative and I flat don't get it. It's not like the Cowboys have been that relevant, except in the ratings, the last 20 years. The glory years are long gone and winning the East should carry more weight than it does, but it does not.

You must be young.

None of that used to be the standard here. This market once had Patriots-like expectations every year.

Those offenses may look crazy complex, but actually they are very QB friendly.

I'd like to see if Dak can do it. If he can and with this roster, we are SB contenders.

The problem is the team is limited by the coaching staff and their stale offensive philosophies. "Beat the guy across from you" worked in the 1990's, but will not get very far in the NFL these days.

We have 9 years of Jason Garrett as evidence of this.

Unless you consider our head coach, but you are right, we are a young team learning how to win and even though I'm not the biggest Jason Garrett fan, if we win a Super Bowl Garrett instantly becomes the 3rd best coach in Dallas history. :starspin:

its the super haters view no SB then we suck harder than a Kirby..we sure win a lot pof games for a team in such a mess..

I agree need more from the coaching staff especially on offense but bad teams with outdated offenses and horrible GM and owner and coaching dont make the 2nd round of the layoffs and win their division so often..

Lets get closer to the middle in your arguments to make them more valid, we arent elite but we for sure are not in shambles..Im over Garett as well but finishing top 8 in the league doesnt make him so bad that Jerrys senile for keeping him..

Im sure JG is on his last life of 9 lives..Jerry does feel the pressure, hes fighting loyalty vs the right thing to do..

I don't think Jerry necessarily believe in Garrett anymore. I think he despises winning big again and not getting the credit....again.

He'd rather lose his way than win his critics' way.
