Any HC considering the Cowboys must first consider the QB because that can be a coach killer. The Joneses intend on extending Prescott and if any HC thinks he could bench him, if he felt that was warranted, he'd better think again. He's joined at the hip with this QB.

So, a coach like Payton or McDaniels or Riley, do they take on Prescott as their QB or do they pick their own? Can they see Prescott executing their offense as they lay it out? If you've watched Brees, Brady, Mayfield or Murray, does Prescott resemble that to you?

Some feel Payton wants to leave when Brees hangs it up, based on what? Have y'all taken a really close look at these QB studs like Lawrence, Herbert and Tua coming up? Those 3 are already better than Prescott on his best day. Why would any highly regarded OC or offensive minded HC take the Cowboys job if they have to put a governor on their offense?

And do not take this as hatin' on Prescott, I just see him for what he has been, is and do not think he's going to get appreciably better so any HC is going to have to rely on not only surrounding him with better talent but most of all, keeping that talent on the field.

Im not saying that there are not coaches that could have done better than JG over the last 3 seasons considering the things that he had to over come but those coaches were not available. IF one comes available in the future I am down for upgrading but I would be against making a change for the sake of making a change.....that would be the real conundrum.

its the super haters view no SB then we suck harder than a Kirby..we sure win a lot pof games for a team in such a mess..

I agree need more from the coaching staff especially on offense but bad teams with outdated offenses and horrible GM and owner and coaching dont make the 2nd round of the layoffs and win their division so often..

Lets get closer to the middle in your arguments to make them more valid, we arent elite but we for sure are not in shambles..Im over Garett as well but finishing top 8 in the league doesnt make him so bad that Jerrys senile for keeping him..

Im sure JG is on his last life of 9 lives..Jerry does feel the pressure, hes fighting loyalty vs the right thing to do..
This town never celebrated division titles in the 70s,80s,or 90s. It EXPECTED them.

This used to be the Yankees, Lakers, Patriots market of the NFL. Now it's just a franchise living in its ancient past.

Like most all of you, I've seen enough of this stale one-act play. Garrett did some important things here, but that was long ago, and it's definitely time for a new coach and approach.

But who? And how?

All of Jerry's GM sins are haunting him right now, and the Cowboys are a cloudy mess. What are the Cowboys wanting to be exactly? And who would really want to come here of any repute?

Some say he wants Sean Payton, and that makes enough sense with their history. But I just don't see how that would work.

Beyond just the contractual aspect of this, what has Payton ever done without Drew Brees? He got fired as the Giants' offensive coordinator. And just how is he going to institute his offense here with Dak Prescott? That offensive style just doesn't suit Dak's strengths and weaknesses.

Much of the same can be said for Josh McDaniels, or Lincoln Riley, or any other young passing guru coach out there. That's the flavor of the day, but just where is the fit for a coach like that in Dallas right now?

The eyes say this is a run-oriented, defensive football team, which is the opposite of what the Sean McVay crazed league is heading toward. That's perfectly fine, but it doesn't warrant the type of coach that everybody is clamoring for.

Rather than trying to incorporate things this offense isn't suited to do with Dak, wouldn't it be smarter to go after a more defensive-minded head coach in the traditional Parcells or Jimmy model?

That's what Jerry has hoped Garrett would become. Garrett takes that type of approach, but it's not amounting to anything beyond moderate regular season success. It works much of the time, but when a game gets sideways and the Cowboys have change up, most of the time they just can't.

A change of scheme is a good idea if you can do it. Maybe this team can make that change, and maybe it can't.

I think Jerry is afraid to take that leap of faith on a big-money new coach, and I think he's afraid to hear the truth from that new coach when he gets here. Money owed means power, and Jerry doesn't like handing that over to anyone. So he does nothing. Again.

Jerry, Garrett, and Dak are forever intertwined. They will win or go down together.

If Jerry capitulates and brings in a new guy, it won't be his idea. He hates that. It means WE were right, and even in grand victory, it will be a bitter pill. His way didn't work. Ours did.

That's like Jimmy Johnson all over again, and it would gnaw him to his core.
noones Cornered you can fire or hire anytime.. coaches dont count against the cap.. they dont care what you think or what the media thinks, they will come to decsions when they are ready..when they are to the contrary no one will work with Jerry as GM will be debunked..when they are ready and actually go after the big fish or new young gun, they will throw the money that Oakland did at Gruden.. the chance for Cash and team that just needs nudge to get to where they want..why woundnt they?

As long as the Jones family owns the team, none of it really matters.

Otoh... we do agree on this... fwiw.

At least, the Jerry and Garrett part... those two are on the cusp of some big decisions about their football futures... when will Jerry step back and have Stephen take the wheel... if Red continues here, or not.

Dak?

Dak's going to be around for awhile. I'd leave him out of that equation in terms of "forever intertwined."
No, they're intertwined, all three of them. Most franchises wouldn't be so entrenched in Dak. Jerry NEEDS Dak to be the guy so badly for his own sake, as does Garrett.

They refused to let Romo even compete for the job in 2017, which was colossally stupid. No other franchise would have done that.

They're the current triplets. Taking all the arrows of blame together every day.

We finished in the top 8 teams in the NFL this year. We have won the NFC East 3 out of the last 5 years.

We also have the 2nd youngest team in the NFL right now.

Lets stop beginning every story with how much of a mess our organization is just to give our threads more relevance.

We are not really in that bad of shape.

You're right but our problem is clear and that's game day coaching. It's horrible and gives us no advantage.

We're all talent. Nothing else.

You must not pay attention to Jerry Jones.

The thing he hates more than anything is a coach with power. Parcells helped him build a football stadium. Otherwise, it's been a collection of Chan Gailey, Dave Campo, Wade Phillips, and Jason Garrett. A bunch of invertebrate yes men.

Age and time might make him do differently, but he'll do so begrudgingly.

That's key to this. Can these guru offensive guys run their offenses here with a QB who doesn't like to play in the pocket?

A new coach with a huge contract will want to make changes, very likely at QB soon, too. Is Jerry cool with that?

I agree. Of course some will say we’re “lowering our stands” and are “satisfied with mediocrity”. OF COURSE I’m unhappy about 23 years without a SB. OF COURSE I realize Jerry’s a meddling attentionwhore with a giant ego. OF COURSE I see the bad drafts, poor trades and coaching snafus. But I TRY to be realistic. With salary cap and FA comes parity, and a thousand variables affect the outcomes. Personally, I’d like to see a new HC, but I can still enjoy the Cowboys with Garrett as coach. If that turns some off, so be it.

Odd the Stadium is never empty?is the team losing money? merchandise sales down? I get your point but it could be worse..a lot worse...I dotn judge team by its 29yr drought, you have to look at the new teams as they emerge, yes the Romo, witten , Dez area was failure for titles , they were solid but just coudnt make it.

this is very young team full of new stars and have already been to the playoffs 2 of 3 season with playoff win and close loss, they have to eb judged on what they are doing..as fan we can see development , progress..we missed the playoffs in 2017 by unfair judgement of a bad commissioner, period..his window is just opening , im not passing judgement on dak and company for past failures..stop living in the past...I sure hate to be Texas Ranger , Stars, or Mavs fan because at your standards they should pack up and leave because they sure would trade the last 3 yrs of Cowboys alleged mediocrity for nearly their entire existence..

It is what it is but the old regime may have been winners over 29yrs of Landry etc but with the standards you set they were worse then Jerrys regime because Jerry has won 3 Sbs to their 2 they were on a downhill slide and jerry took over and put us back on the map..now we are in new SB drought..what was the last SB 1978 and by 1988 were having ticket give away at Krogers as attendance was so poor.

Im just saying this group of players get chance to get there before I start calling this failure..

You think Dak would be able to run those offenses?
Rams yes Saints no. Rams play action so much that’s right up Daks alley. They run a ton of short crossing routes and throw to the RB. Dark can do that.

Don’t know how he’d do in New Orleans with Payton but that’s a tougher offense I think.

Parity really hasn't had much effect on the Patriots, Steelers, Packers, Seahawks.....

Parity is for 25-26 teams. The others just win.

You're right, we're not in bad shape. We're ahead of 75% of the league...but that's not the goal.

I think talking about needing a new coach now and speculating on who that would be is pointless because I think the odds of the team is moving on from Garrett this year is minuscule. This topic should be revisited in a year.

The Rams offense is run oriented. They run the ball just as much or more than the Cowboys do. It's just that when they do pass, their systems and schemes are far superior and more effective than the stale mess in Dallas.
Same goes with the Saints who actually run the ball more than Dallas does.

This
People think "run oriented " means 1990s
That's not true
We need a real HC

Who gives a rip about money? Great, we built Jerry a $250 million boat. Such a great success. The point is, making the playoffs used to happen every year year for long stretches of time.

Tom Brady has now played n more Super Bowls than any TEAM in NFL history. Here, Tom Landry once had 20 consecutive winning seasons.

Then Jerry fired Jimmy and decided to play fantasy football GM the rest of his life.

I'll reiterate it since you may have missed it.

But Dak Prescott's numbers are better than Drew Brees' were - across the board - before Brees hooked up with Sean Payton. Why is it that Brees numbers can and did, dramatically improve, but a guy like Prescott, with better numbers, couldn't?
