There are several Free agents we could sign and improve the Defense. It doesn't have to be ET.
True, but it seems some folks have the "It's finally happening!", Christmas morning frame of mind.

The Cowboys will always lack a great defense until they get a real difference maker at DT.

Use the Earl Thomas money and go after Trey Flowers.

I almost wish we were a 3-4 and could pay a 1 year super bowl or bust contract to Suggsy.

All right Jerry!!!! Only 23 years to realize S's are important to a D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They drafted Roy Williams in 2002, so not 23 years, but it has been a long time since they invested a lot in the position.

Suggs could still play in a 4-3 as a situational pass rusher

LMAO, they were supposedly the only team talking trade with SEA and couldn't agree and now he's going to be a FA?

Yeah as soon as I posted that I felt stupid. He wouldn't play much base, but a lot of nickel.

It's the kind of thing Suggs wouldn't have been interested in when he was younger, but at this point in his career I think he is okay with a situational role.

Flowers, Collins, Woods, Lawrence on early downs
Suggs, Crawford, Collins, Lawrence on passing downs

omg I love typing that out.

They should have drafted him, they knew more about him than anyone, they watched him play. He stayed his senior year at AR to help Bielema when he could have entered the draft at no worse than where is was picked, the 4th.

A case could be made for tagging Lawrence, trading him for a 1st, and signing Flowers and Richardson and, maybe Thomas, and using that 1st on the best DE.

I believe Cowboys and Earl already have a verbal commitment. Which coulexplain the kids being enrolled in Texas schools.

I would not have a problem with Dallas throwing big money at Thomas as long as it is conditional. Make it where Thomas can earn whatever top dollar is for safeties based on playing time, etc. At this point, he's older and he's coming off injury so there need to be some realistic goals built in with both the signing bonus and base salary being smaller.

I think we have interest but I also wouldn't put a lot of stock in him moving to Austin. He's a Texas kid, he went to UT and it was said in the past he wants to eventually live full time back in Texas. His kids are young and just starting school so it makes sense to enroll them in the school district/system they likely would be in for the next 10-12 years of their lives regardless of where he actually ends up playing.

In other words, even if he wanted to sign with the Rams, let's say, there's a good chance his family would still move to Texas and now is the right time to enroll his kids in schools there.

The substance of the discussions is what counts. We'll know more in march.

We know the substance of the discussion in the Cowboys locker room last September.

"Cmon Coach, Please! Pleeeeessee!!!!"

Gregory is out of this picture though, and I don't think that's how it would go.

The fact that JJ said, " ...but that's all I'll say." would seem to suggest they plan to make a play for someone. Otherwise, he'd just say, "We're happy with our guys!"

There is a ton of unofficial collusion with NFL FAs, that is why they changed the rule to say teams could talk to FAs a few days before the start of FA but not actually sign them. When the rule was no discussions until the start of FA, the big contract FAs would magically show up in the team with the highest big the night before FA and the "negotiations" would take a half hour.

The NFL changed the rule at that point because it was so blatantly obvious what was going on.

Don't think so, that would red flag the league office because of all of the coverage last season. He wants his family to live in Austin and his kids to go to school there, that is home. He can rent an apt or buy a house wherever he plays.

Not saying that those discussions don't take place but both sides have to be very careful because if that goes south, could be problems. After Booger shot off his mouth, bragging about Peterson calling him during the George Strait Farewell concert, the league launched an investigation and luckily Booger didn't get into the discussion heavily.....because he was hammered. That was not the first time the Cowboys have been investigated for possible tampering.

I do think they agreed to talk once he was available but I also do not think Thomas will not consider what the teams with more money have to say. Hell, if the money was even, I would take HOU and IND over DAL hands down. CLE? No, I'd take less not to have to dress like that and play in front of the dog pound without the fakes heads on.

I don't have any evidence to back it up, but I don't know if I believe a team would be willing to part with a 1st AND sign the contract he is going to demand. There are enough edge players that they would rather just take the rookie and have the deal.

I’m sure

I’m confident we’ll bring in safeties whom we’ve never heard of and a couple 7 rounders as well
