If the team likes its existing TE's but they are young and developing, and the team needs a 3rd TE on the roster anyway, who would be better for depth and as a mentor, some never was career backup, or someone who made a HOF career out of being the smartest TE in the game?

Not reading 33 pages.
Stupid move on our behalf.
Stops us getting a better and younger TE
what's the contract info. Better be vet min...

Looks like one year, 5 million. He’s playing 25 snaps or less a game. Similar to Antonio Gates

I’m sure he picked up some speed with that year off. Another sentimental decision. It was time to hang it up when he did, that hasn’t changed!

Apparently he won't be used as an every down TE like he was before the year off.

I very much doubt they were going to get to their last salary cap dollar anyway, so using that room they were going to have for one season isn't really a big thing. The difficulty with the guys we need to sign isn't paying for them for one year, it's paying for them over a long term contract, knowing they could decline or get hurt. Witten's one year contract doesn't affect that.

I don't know why they wouldn't spend to the cap in a year where they've effectively told the HC that it's NFCCG or bust. I expect they will. Which means there's an opportunity cost in overpaying Witten.

And they have also said they will not be big spenders in free agency. I think at most they sign one high dollar free agent from outside the organization this year. Saying the HC has to get beyond the division round is not the same as saying they will use every dime of cap space and mortgage the future of the organization for years to come.

Welcome back, 82. Can’t wait to see you back on the field, and I’m sure your teammates feel the same way.

I think it’s funny that this loyalty only goes one way. We’re more than happy to cut a guy on 6/1, if it saves some money. But a player decides to retire to pursue another career - it’s “quitting on the team.”

Silly fans are the only ones who will see it this way. The team is already welcoming him with open arms, just as the FO obviously did by offering the contract.

Witten owes you nothing and did nothing wrong.
Hanging it up during the draft is quitting.

Just meh to me. I don't see it helping us but I don't see it hurting us either. Unless, they play him 98% of the snaps lol.

Obviously as a fan you always having a driving desire to win a championship, so it sounds strange to say this but this sort of makes me want to see them win a SB just a teeny bit more for the huge smile (huge additional smile) I'd get seeing Jason celebrate. Now that said, Im not so confident in the direction this team is taking so I say that in a generic way, but yeah, imagine how much sweeter it could be if they did. No one deserves that more than JW

Most are interpreting Stephen's comments on Tuesday to be a backtrack on that statement. He said they'd be 'aggressive' in terms of our personnel going forward.

Saying the HC has to get beyond the division round is not the same as saying they will use every dime of cap space and mortgage the future of the organization for years to come.

I think you're starting to lose the thread a bit. A few posts ago you distinguished clearly between this year's cap space and mortgaging the future. Now you're suggesting that spending to the cap this year does precisely that. You can't have it both ways.
