I never said they were going to spend up all the cap space and mortgage the future. I said they were not, so they will have plenty of room for Witten. In other words, I don't think Witten's contract is going to push the boundary of the salary cap anyway, and being a 1 year deal it does not affect the future either.

In any event, there is no sense in which spending to the cap this year entails financial commitments in future years. Just as Witten is a one year rental there are a number of other (quite possibly more useful) one year rentals they could go out and get to get them over the hump this year. But overspending on Witten impairs their ability to do that. He represents an opportunity cost equal to the amount by which he is being overpaid.

I do not think this keeps them from drafting a TE in this deep class, if so, they are dumber than we think they are...1 year old man deal.

So, you think there is no chance that what we saw from Jarwin and Schultz the last 4-5 weeks of the season is real, and that signing Witten is just a bridge move to provide depth and support while they are developing?

Obviously as a fan you always having a driving desire to win a championship, so it sounds strange to say this but this sort of makes me want to see them win a SB just a teeny bit more for the huge smile (huge additional smile) I'd get seeing Jason celebrate. Now that said, Im not so confident in the direction this team is taking so I say that in a generic way, but yeah, imagine how much sweeter it could be if they did. No one deserves that more than JW
Not strange at all. I always want to see good guy's get a ring.

The very best thing you can do for Prescott is to give him a quality TE target. This year the draft is rich in them. It's the strongest TE group in years. You can get one even without a first round pick.

Instead we retread.

This is far more important than worrying about snap counts and how much Witten will play. They will not address the position this offseason because of this comeback.

we hear this often.

Hey, if you had Kellen Moore designing your offense, you would unretire too. You have heard of Reid, Martz, Coryell, Walsh and Turner? Amateurs I tell you. Moore should be inducted to the Hall of Fame after two preseason games.

Paying Witten doesn't only impair their ability to get a one year rental to help them over the hump at TE, it eliminates the need for it. He fills that need.

If you are talking about other positions, again, I don't think we are going to threaten to go over the salary cap anyway, so I don't think Witten's deal is really going to be an impediment to other 1 year contracts.

It is a 1 year deal but none of us know if he will play beyond the 1 year. At this stage I would think that is all either side will commit to and I have no problem with that. For argument sake lets say Witten has a productive season for the Cowboys who is to say he would not look for another 1 year deal?

Whoa, I bet Witten is already working out intensely, if I know anything about him at all.

If not, he's sure to be very soon! Let's hope he doesn't hurt himself in the process! ;)

If nothing else, it should serve to afford Blake and Schultz some extra time to develop.

Yeah, we’re at an impasse. I strongly disagree with both of your assertions. I don’t think a 25 snap count guy adequately addresses our need at TE (though I agree that they’re done at TE) and I don’t agree that they won’t spend to the cap this year.

We’ll have to revisit this argument down the line to see which of us was correct, if either of us still cares.
