Ok, I disagree. I think the "news" is not that the team is in fact bringing Hurns back, the "news" is the fact that they are apparently dumb enough to bring him back under his current ridiculous contract.

So, we appear to be leaning toward Hurns for a slot receiver, a guy who couldn't do anything for us BEFORE his horrible injury. Sounds about right for this team.

Archer has it wrong too. The option guarantees that the Cowboys are paying him $4 million for 2019. The same way not picking up Terrance Williams option works. That’s why they are options. And why they have to be picked up or not early in free agency. You pay the player or you let them go.

Here is the problem in Dallas summed up perfectly:

$6 million on a guy who gave you just 20 catches last year. And a receiver trying to come back from a serious ankle injury.

Oh, but he's "well liked", and that's what's most important in Dallas.

And that's why they never win anymore.

Emotions don't equal reality.

The Cowboys won the division AND for 2019 and 2020 have about 2x or more the cap space of the other NFCE teams.

Cap management is NOT a problem for the Cowboys.

The Hurns move is odd but their cap management and talent acquisition process the past few years has been terrific.

They didn't lose the Rams game due to a lack of talent. They lost because of the coaches got out-coached in a big way.

I don’t think the 4 million option is guaranteed. They can still cut him later to save the money I believe.

Issue I have is that his cap hit is a pretty significant one at over $6MM. So sure, you can cut him in the future if he can't hack it but by then, the WR crop is picked clean. In other words, if you get through 3 weeks of camp in August and its clear Hurns isn't going to work out or isn't on pace to start the season, it's not like you can just then cut him, use the $5MM saved and go find a better replacement.

Right now you have a HUGE hole at the 3rd WR spot behind Gallup and Cooper. They are counting on Hurns to be that 3rd WR. How confident is anyone here that 1) he can be that guy 2) that he'll even be healthy enough to perform in 2019 coming off a horrific injury?

Seems like an unnecessary risk IMO. Cut him, save the $5MM in cap space and go out and find a healthier, vet WR.

$20 million of the cap tied up in "feels" moves like this. Stacked next to the $2 million-plus they gifted to Cheech Irving to puff away.

Personnel moves are always a probability decision (i.e. Teams assess the probability that a player will be worth the contract or in the draft, worth the pick).

The David Irving at 2M tender was a good risk/reward bet because his upside was a 20M per type player.

He says he will be football ready. He's coming off a significant leg injury. Plus, time and time again we see guys coming off significant injuries, especially leg injuries where it could take a season or so for them to even find their legs again.

This is just an unnecessary risk IMO. Signing him last year was a pretty good move IMO. I am just not sure picking up the option is a wise move given what's happened.

There is no risk. Picking up his option is just insurance.

If a better option becomes available through free agency or the draft the cowboys can still cut Hurns. The option doesn’t include additional guaranteed money.
