Fish: Cowboys will pick up Hurns option by March 12

I feel you stash. I really do. Believe me. I want to UPGRADE the team. I would much prefer Beasley back or a better option like Humphries or a draft pick.

And like you I DO NOT trust the FO to do well in free agency.

But I don’t think picking up his option itself is necessarily a negative. Them using it as an excuse to not find somebody else will be the problem. Lol

You're being reasonable, so I can't argue with that. I just argue with this thought of the team having an option that really doesn't do anything.

None of what Drummond or Archer is saying qualifies as an "option". What they're saying is that the Cowboys are agreeing to pay Hurns, unless they decide not to. It makes no sense. No player is going to sign his rights away for a team to pay him if they feel like it later on, when the player then has no options.

I'm calling shenanigans with how they're reporting this.

You have to rembwr that Hurns received a signing bonus when he signed this contract last off season though. So Hurns already has received his guaranteed money from the jump. I just believe this 4 million isn’t guaranteed.

I would like them to get a receiver who can actually return a damn punt. How long has it been since we actually had a threat at punt returner?

I do not. Otherwise, there is no option.

I'm not sure they're done at the TE position at all. Don't rule out them still signing Eifert AND drafting one of the top 3-4 at 58. Two years ago they overhauled the secondary. Last year they overhauled the WR unit. This could very be the year they do the same to the TE unit. I've said this before, Witten was more an intangible signing. We STILL need a full-time quality starting TE. This is why I would rule out Eifert being still very much in the pic as a starter. IF/when he gets hurt, we're sill good shape with a rookie (58) and part-time Witten.

That's a lot of TE's. I'm not opposed.

I don't think the option is guaranteed ....but with the injury if he has to go on the PUP or IR they have to pay him......STUPID

The 1m Roster Bonus is 60k per game incentives

I would pass on the option.... no one is signing a WR with a badly broken leg.....except DAL

He would be available for the vet minimum a month after FA begins

Hurns excelled as a slot receiver in Jacksonville and could here too if they use him in that capacity. I think the issue was they signed him to be an outside receiver to replace Dez and thats not his primary strength. By the time the Cowboys figured that out they traded for Cooper pushing Hurns down the depth chart and leaving him with a limited number of routes to run in a run first offense. This year Hurns may actually have the opportunity to run more routes in the slot that previously went to Beasley.

For those that don't see the logic in this move it really accomplishes 2 things.

1) It provides insurance should Beasley leave and buys the Cowboys time to find the best replacement. Hurns contract doesn't have additional gurantees so if he's not the best option after training camp they can make a decision at that time with little financial burden.

2) Hurns has been a great locker room guy and by picking up the option it sends a positive message for the team and others considering offers from the Cowboys.

That’s a separate issue than the contract itself though Sydla. That’s the point. Then picking up the option right now involves no risk.

If you’re asking if I trust the FO to do well in free agency, then of course the answer is no. Lol

But it is the point. The front office isn't picking up the option to protect itself. They are picking up the option because they think they have solved the slot WR issue.

In my mind, there are two things at play here with this "announcement." Either 1) the Cowboys are trying to use it as leverage to re-sign Beasley (i.e., we have a replacement already, so bring your number down); or 2) Kellen Moore prefers a bigger slot receiver who can get vertical up the seem and make contested catches in front of safeties. Not Beasley's forte. We'll see.

i'd rather have Beasley, even if he cost a bit more.

If they wanted it guaranteed they would make it a 4m roster or option bonus paid on activation

The option simply protects the team's rights and allowed for the signing bonus to be pro-rated last year

I’m still not getting it. I still see no reason for the option existing.

According to Mickey, Hurns will have a “Chance” to make the team or he will get cut. The Cap hit is 1.2 to 1.5 Mill..

My guess is that he won’t make the team....

The team doesn't want to give a player a one year deal and see him excel and then have to overpay the next year

It is easier to include the option year and it also allows them to pro-rate the initial signing bonus

But there is no reason to guarantee it ..... it is a Team Option, not a Player Option.... the team still keeps the control..... it just brings TC injuries into play

No, the cap hit is 6.25m

If he is cut the cap hit would be 1.25m
