This is why you don’t sign everybody in FA

Just look at last year's big week 1 FA signings. Bet most of the teams wish they could dump those contracts.

Agree 100% but think most fans frustration was/is Stephen trying to make a living off bottom feeders rather than adding one or two mid-tier free agents. But knock on wood, he seems to have gotten it right this offseason.
Great thread. It happens every year. Teams that can afford to sign these free agents for crazy amount of money are teams that haven’t done well. Draft right.

Fans get so emo about Dallas not signing the most expensive guys. But here is why you dont go this route.

the Rams arent looking to resign goff when it would be cheaper now because they cant. And are gonna have a tougher time later in a yr or two when these deals theyve made now are heavier against the cap, to go along with Goffs bloated contract in a yr or two.

The eagles continue to get older with guys that are signed for 1 yr but them too cant resign Went. Yes they continue to keep signing players with known names on their jerseys, but theyre washed up. Trying to hold on before they have to bust it up in a yr or two.

Edit: thread is supposed to say everybody, chromebook changed it lol

No argument from me. I just don't want to see a team take a firm stance one way or the other. The GM should be aware of our cap situation and act accordingly.

You can't win this league without football players. Sure you need a few money veterans. It's a delicate balance. The Patriots seem to be the only franchise that really has it down. Everybody wants to mimic them but they don't want to do the Dirty Work. Like goodbye Lawrence
And they just let their stud LT and DE walk for Comp Picks in 2020

Winning gives teams a lot of lee-way

They had that strategy from day one. When they let McGinnis go. You cannot win in this league without pressure up the middle. I don't care how great your Edge rushing is. If the quarterback can Step Up you'll never get there. I've been asking for a defensive tackle for 3 Seasons.

we hear that every year about teams..."they won't be able to do this or that because of the cap"....yet they do it. even this year, we heard the Eagles couldn't do anything....yet they did. the cap is a joke unless your last name is Jones.
This article is saying they cant sign him now, so they arent even trying.

I'd rather have football players than money Players. I Want guys who want to make a name for themselves. Not necessarily the guy that already made his name. Although I understand the importance of the veteran leadership.

The Rams have so much cap space after this year that they could give Goff 80 million dollars and not miss a beat.

I don't think that's what the article is saying at all, actually.

Goff's cap hit this year is about 9m, a new contract could keep that number the same, with the salary ramping up the following years.

That's what we did when we resigned Zack. His cap number in 2018 went from 9.3m to 6m, with a huge bump in 2019 to 14m.

The Ram's are scheduled to have 76m of Cap Space in 2020, which is the 9th most in the league, so if the article is saying they CAN'T sign Goff, then it's wrong.

He better learn how to read a defense before they pay him. The microphone turns off 15 seconds after the play clock starts. He had a problem reading defenses during the playoffs. I understand he's still young like Prescott.

Except no one has ever said sign all the high priced guys in FA.

They own Goff's rights for 2 more years, not including the FT.
Why not ride the cheap ELC deal, and or make sure he's truly a franchise QB or glorified system QB in the mean time?

In 2020 The Rams have 88 mil in cap space
Ding, Ding Ding. We have a winner. Unless your QB is Brady, Manning, Mahomes, Wilson, Luck type... Do not go overboard and let the market play out.
This brings me to the point I have been making relentlessly for the past two years. Do not overpay for Dak Prescott. We all think he is a "good" QB, he is not worth $25 million right now. Play out his deal.
The problem from the Cowboy perspective is, he saved Jerry's butt when Romo went down and we went from mediocre to front and center in 2016 with Dak and Zeke. The other major problem is our coaching system is not conducive to our talent level. We all know McVay coaches up Goff and puts him in a position to excel. JG is the opposite for Dak. Some would say Dak makes it happen despite JG. I actually hold my breath every time Dak bails us out with these crazy runs within 10 yards of the goal line. He has taken some massive hits, and i am sure he has had at least one concussion.

IMO I think they get a deal with Dak similar to how Romo's first extension was done. Mid season. If he looks good then under Moores play calling, re-sign him then before the offseason and talk of tags come up.

I wonder if the Eagle fans think signing those players was worth the Super Bowl trophy?

I think Dak's contract is more of a concern than Tank. Dak has Jerry is a very vulnerable position. Jerry has no option to replace Dak no matter how mediocre or how great we think he is.

Rams have quietly lost Saffold their starting guard, Joyner their starting FS, Mark Barron starting LB, and are going to likely lost Suh their starting DT, Sullivan their starting center, along with many other contributors.

I totally disagree.
