Ya man, We did play in enough of them then, and those S.B. losses were tough to deal with.

It wasn't just the SB losses. From '70 to about '83 I consider an era before we started to retool for the 90s team. But we lost 3 straight championship games. That bum Rams team in '76 and '79! There is probably more I'm forgetting. What made it all the more disappointing is I fully expected them to win, or at least reach the Super Bowl in all except the Championship loss to the Eagles.

Yeah. On the bright side at least every year Dallas was good and the seasons were enjoyable. That was when I was growing up so I'll always remember it. But the 90s Cowboys even though short lived hold better memories.

My history of being a Cowboys fan covers everything from they day they were conceived. The posed question isn't hard to answer. As legendary as the Cowboys became in the Tom Landry era, no team has topped what the 90's team did by winning 3 SBs in 5 years and only the Pats have duplicated it. So that's my answer. The humble beginnings of the Dallas "next years champs" Cowboys of the last '60s and early '70s was an interesting era. The winning ways of Staubach's '70's Cowboys was in my eyes the good guys to the Steeler's bad guys and it is that rivalry that won me over as a young man. Under appreciated Danny White and his Cowboys of the '80s broke my heart more times that I care to recollect but it was still an era I look back on fondly. The era of Jerry Jones started poorly with the rude dismissal of Tom Landry but he purchased a sinking ship that was losing money, so to see how quickly he righted that ship in only 4 short years seems almost as if he made a deal with the devil... maybe he did. The past 23 season have been a hard price to pay if that was the bounty for the 3 SBs in 5 years in the '90s. Let's hope the best era is just ahead of us. Go Cowboys! :flagwave:

The Steelers won the Super Bowl 4 times in 6 years. (note: I really hate the Steelers) If your looking at long term eras I think the Cowboys 1966-1985 era was the 3rd best long term dynasty. They probably should have won at least 2 more times but that's not what happened. (long term dynasties Patriots 2001-???? is #1 the 49ers 1981-1998 is #2)
BTW there is just no reasonable belief that any NFL team was losing money any time in the last 50+ years. Anyone that claimed that was lying. OTOH my father once told me "There are lies, damned lies and statististics, but if you really want to blow smoke up someone's @$$ go with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles." I leave you to guess what his profession was.

I’m going with early 80s and late 70s. Very closely followed by early 90s. I’ll always have Dorsett, Landry, Randy and Staubach/Danny White as my favorite Cowboys. That was my introduction to the Cowboys and they were my childhood heroes.

The triplets era was special too, and of course more successful championship wise. I have nothing but respect for Troy and Co. It was just a different mystique and certain indescrible feeling to be a Cowboys fan back then. Like the end of the golden age or something generational. Meeting coach Landry and talking with him 1 on 1 for 10 mins or so still ranks as one of my life’s all time coolest moments.

70's.

If you were lucky enough to experience them, you understand why.
The absolute glory years. Staubach, Dorsett,
Good afternoon all, I was sitting here pondering my length of time as a Cowboys fan and a thought came to mind. What is my favorite Cowboys Era? It's really eye opening when you talk to people who were born in the 90s or after who are not historians of the team, and they are really lost when you mention players like Scott Laidlaw, Aaron Kyle, Glen Carano, Efren Herrera, Doug Cosbie, etc....Although I was born in the 70's I still did my research on the team's of the 60s because I love my Cowboys, however I can only talk about what I've seen. I would have to say that my favorite era was from 1977 to 1987. Because as a kid during this time period I was able to watch the games with my family and develop love for my favorite players (Tony Hill, Tony Dorsett, Drew Pearson,etc..)
The explosiveness of Dandy Don Meredith hooking up with Bob Hayes was exciting. The 80s came very close to greatness if not for Danny White's injury. We had great players and coaches from both the 70s and 90s. I loved both eras. I grew up with Cowboys from their inception. I watched Landry, Staubach, Dorsett, Lilly, White, et al, define the team's greatness. They are part of my life like family. I thought the 90s were more more dominant, but watching the Cowboys emerge in the 70s was fantastic.

If you were lucky enough to experience the late 60’s thru the entire decade of the 70’s this is a no brainer.
I would have loved to have seen Bob Hayes, Bob Lilly, and Randy White cook in their primes or one of Roger's comebacks.

For me it's the 90s of course as I grew up on those teams.

Way to rub salt in the wound of 2 SB loses to Pitt. It's a well-known fact the Cowboys were losing money when Jerry Jones bought the team.

Oh btw, no one asked for your thoughts about long term dynasties. This is about the greatest Cowboys era and peoples preferences. We aren't debating my preferences so thanks but no thanks.

Definitely the Staubach years. How can you beat Tom Landry, Drew Pearson, Golden Richards, Tony Dorsett, Too Tall, Manster, etc etc. Being a kid and a Cowboy fan back then was exciting. It's where I grew my hate for the Steelers and Commanders that still remains today. I appreciated Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys but I have to go back to my 70's roots where my love for the Cowboys first began. Back when the NFL was actually fun...

What was so great about the 90's was we finally got even with all the humiliation we had to go through from the previous few years. I remember getting laughed at in malls when I would buy Cowboy stuff. The feeling of winning that SB in 1992-1993 was just perfect. I imagine our next one will feel even better.

Definitely! I grew up in DC era. During the Skins Super Bowls in the 80s. I went to Landry’s last win and Jummy’s first at RFK. Took so much heat. When I went back wearing Super Bowl swag it was the best revenge I could have. I’ll never forget Jimmy’s first win and how pissed the fans were they lost after the game. I gloated after taking so much trash beforehand. :muttley:

Too young for the 70s era but I fell in love in the early 90s. Will always be the best football era for me.

the team today is still living off of the 70's and 90's jones and son and his joke of coaches other than parcells have pretty made the cowboys average at best
