Well some 30 hours until the first round of the draft starts and still everything is up in the air for every team and especially our Cowboys. What are we going to do? What can we expect?
None of us know who will be available when the Cowboys pick whether it is at 58 or earlier or later, just not possible to know. However, we can somewhat look at what the Cowboys have down this off season to just possibly get a read or two. It is a strange time for the Cowboys but maybe a really good time.
My first impression of this draft is that no team thinks this is a great draft, heck maybe not even a good draft. This draft appears to be one with very many sure starters. Hearing to more than 20 true 1st round guys and as little as 9 1st round guys. Then you hear there are many of 2nd and 3rd round depth guys. DEPTH GUYS? I thought most teams want those 2nd and 3rd round guys to be capable of starting or at least contributing in their 1st year in the NFL. Dallas and Cleveland by a long shot got WR talent better than anything in this draft by trading their 1st round picks and KC got more value with Clark than anything out of the 1st ten picks.
So what could happen or will happen or hope happen? I do predict Dallas will stick to their draft board and take the BPA regardless of position in the 2nd round or whenever their 1st pick is. We will know exactly what Dallas thinks of some players already on the roster when it comes down to the draft also. Will Dallas actually trade away some players like Lewis CB or Taco DE or Crawford DL or Hurns WR or anyothers. If any player is rumored to be on the trade block then we should expect Dallas to address that position in some way during the draft.
If there are multiple players Dallas likes at 58 with near or the same grade then I fully expect Dallas to attempt to trade down and acquire additional picks. Would they trade out of the 2nd round altogether? They could depending on the offer and who they believe will be available at the time of their next pick. Having say three 3rd round picks might well be better than one 2nd and one 3rd if this is truly a depth draft. And the same could be said of any of their picks. Nothing says they will settle where they are at on any round.
We will get an idea also of how they like certain guys on the roster such as Taco or Thompson at S or any of the WR beyond Cooper, Gallup and Cobb or Collins at RT. What I believe we can be sure about is that they will take a RB sometime on Saturday to compete for Zeke's backup but also will not be surprised to see on Sunday they resign Smith as a potential backup RB.
Dallas is going to draft guys they believe make the most sense for their coaches and with the potential to be a starter sooner than later. Most have their belief on who and when we will take a safety although I do believe that Deionte Thompson S Alabama could be the ultimate target and probably could be had in the 3rd round. He is more of a cover 2 and press safety and although he could play in the box, my bet is that they would move Xavier Woods to the box and Thompson to the single high safety. Coverage is more pressing in the NFL today than a true SS box type guy.
At the DL, I see them going for the guy that can rotate with Lawrence than anything so for me a LDE not so much a RDE type which is more of a Ferguson or Zach Allen type and the fact that either could also line up at DT. On the DT side, it will be one or two guys that are definitely 3 tech guys. Yes, we still are not going to target a strictly 1 tech guy as Marinelli nor Richard believe in them, just a fact, nothing more.
I do believe we take a CB also but it will be one of length, size and speed that Richard wants. May not be a top rated guy but one he can turn into a top rated guy similar to what he did with Chancellor and Sherman while at Seattle. And yes I do believe we take a TE somewhere in the draft but what none of us know is what type of TE does Moore want for his offensive scheme, is it a blocker/pass catcher or pass catcher/speed guy or a hybrid WR that maybe a Noah Brown could be.
My prediction is that Dallas will make several trades that include obtaining not only more picks but future picks and that there will be some of our players involved with those trades. Also, the UDFA market is going to be huge for Dallas this year and see them very active on more than a couple of players to make sure they get them. My biggest hope for the draft is that Jeffery Simmons drops to 58 and Dallas takes him as I believe he could become one of the top 5 best picks in this draft eventhough he won't play until 2020. Realistic? Very doubtful but hey it is that time of year.
