But there is always room for a breakout performer. And early on this offseason, Jon’Vea Johnson is fitting that bill. The undrafted rookie free agent out of Toledo was coveted by the Cowboys’ coaching staff and they jumped on him when Johnson ended up going undrafted last month.

Early signs are that Dallas was right to bring Johnson in as one of their limited 30 draft visits earlier this year. The 5-foot-10, 191 pound speedster turned in a blazing 4.38 time in the forty during his pro day. The Cowboys have been in desperate need for a receiver who can take the top off of defenses and Johnson could be the answer.

Here’s what Cowboys’ wide receivers coach, Sanjay Lal, told DallasCowboys.comrecently about the impressive early play of the undrafted rookie.

“It’s not a surprise, because we loved his film, but Jon’Vea the last two days, his speed and athleticism and how smooth he is has shown up here – almost a little bit earlier than we thought it would.”

I guess this is going to be the annual overhyped player that gets cut

75% likely. But the 25% are fun stories. At least he has unique athleticism. Makes it worth paying attention to in the preseason.

No doubt. If the Cowboys were really that high on the guy, they sure as hell wouldn't be broadcasting to other teams what a great find he was. They'd be keeping a low profile with hopes of getting him on the practice squad...

We can always use the seed. Hope they can sneak him onto the practice squad.

Yeah I been waiting for a few players for fans to start the hype train, like the Darius Jackson stuff a few years back.
I see Johnson as a PS player right now. Need to see all these WR's in TC.

I am glad to read the positive articles and such. But also, we all know we need to see it in TC. Showing the speed in OTA's is fine, but is he grasping everything else and are the others as well.

Good. We need a speed WR. The more guys you bring in who can fly, the better chance of one actually making it.

Whos gets cut to make room for him? Austin or Brown?

Neither. Austin will likely get hurt and one of them gets called up.

But it would likely be Austin even though he’s only due 1 million. Brown is under contract for two years and is a solid blocker.

We can get what Austin does much easier.

I think Austin. Between Johnson and Pollard, there's not much unique that Austin has to offer.

Having said that, who knows what happens with Johnson when pads come on. But, given that his talent is speed and the way they'll try to use Johnson, there shouldn't be a huge learning curve.

I watched some of him and in camps he looked slow making his breaks or coming out. Of course I was comparing him to Cooper.
