Staubach HOF
Bradsahw HOF
Plunkett probably the single most debated player left out and if Im not mistaken only qb with 2 rinsg not in HOF
Brady considered the greatest QB Ever
Warner HOF
To call any of the above a backup is a joke.
Morral did not take over mid season for a starter... no dice
Ill give you Williams, and like I already said, Hostetter and Foles, thats it. Bottom line is if you lose your starter mid-season, your season is over
Staubach..... hahahahahhahahahah, PULEASE!
I guess I could put in Steve Young to your list also, he did sit behind Montana..... smh
Just because some of them went on to have great careers didn't mean they weren't a backup at some point, they weren't HOFers then. Morrall came in off the bench during a Superbowl, when Unitas was injured and won the game. He took over for the Dolphins as starter in week 6 after Griese was injured. He didn't start that Super Bowl, but he helped save their season to get them there. He also became the Colts starter when Johnny U. was lost for the season, during a pre-season game. He wasn't meant to be the starter that season, but still lead the team to a Super Bowl, but lost to the Jets.
Brady only got a shot because Bledsoe got injured. He might have not even been given a chance to compete for the job since Bledsoe had just signed an NFL record 10 year contract. If not for that injury it's a guess when Brady would have gotten a shot as a starter.
Plunkett was a journeyman QB in his 30's and riding the bench. He was only given another chance to start when Pastorini broke his leg and they didn't think Marc Wilson was experienced enough to start.
Roger was a backup because Landry didn't trust him enough and Morton had just taken the team to a Super Bowl and one of the best passers in the league.
Warner had played in NFL Europe, the Arena League, left unprotected in the Expansion draft, he wasn't even given a chance to compete for the starting QB job. Trent Green had just signed a brand new contract too and if not for the injury we'll never know when/if Warner would have even been given a shot.
Some of them ended up being better than the guys they replaced, but they were still backups to someone else when they took those teams to a Super Bowl in their respective years. It was fortunate they had quality depth. Some of those guys were expected or teams hoped they would eventually become starters, but some were fortunate accidents.
Young wouldn't count since he didn't win a Super Bowl as Montana's backup. Young has 3 rings, but only "won" one of them, Montana won his other two.
