You can add Hamburger Hill to those two as well for Vietnam and The Thin Red Line did the same thing for WWII regarding the battle for ground and the price to pay for every inch of it.

Full Metal Jacket could have been two movies and had the first one expand a little more on boot camp and end with them shipping out right after the death of "Pyle". Vincent D'Onofrio was just great in FMJ. I can't imagine anyone playing that part better.
* that's about the closest facsimile of a Hollywood portrayal of Marine Corp boot camp training that comes closest to what it was like( when I cycled thru,at least),,,er,,,minus the senior drill instructor getting a window blown thru his bellows in the head,,, as,I know for a fact, they'd " pop" you in the solar plexus with a deftly quick judo/savate punch in order to instill ones focus away from the hilariously humorous ( ya,I couldn't stop laughing at some of the s*** that was being said&done& got the "tune-up" for it,,,er,,, also that 40 gallon galvanized s*** can dropped down over one's head& shoulders is a quick& lasting reminder in their remedial refresher course of MARINE TRAINING:thumbup::starspin::thumbup:

Well let's just say a whole lotta folks love to rank movies and your peers have voted for these movies being the best of all time.

I think "WOZ" is a wonderful movie.

But not the all-time greatest.

Shawshank Redemption is beyond boring. Nothing from that movie is iconic compared to something like the ruby slippers. To be mentioned as the greatest, something has to be iconic.

Shawshank Redemption is one of the all time great movies. Obviously you haven’t watched it from beginning to end.

One of the best scenes in the whole movie especially during the middle section of the song when the Patton Tank fires off a couple rounds. And as Rockport mentioned above FMJ was pretty accurate as far as USMC boot camp goes, one thing that was wrong though is that live ammo was NEVER allowed in the squad bay.

*ha-ha-ha,,I kept a 7.62mm tracer round in my left breast pocket of my class A alpha's during inspection(and kept it there till I rolled out, in fact, it's still in that pocket, hanging up in the motor home & once had deftly removed a "stashed" green reefer twisty from the butt-trap compartment of my rifle & methodically ground it down into complete nothingness under my boot during an impromptu "shakedown" inspection before we were to relieve the prior duty platoons 'Q' nuclear warhead area guard ,,,the Sgt. found a Quaalude in the bottom of my compression bandage carrier case that I'd forgotten about it being stashed back there,,, he tucked it into my Cammie blouse front pocket& laughingly told me to tighten it up/ yer' getting sloppy,,,man! I got " popped" one time with a starfoam packing box of hand grenade fuzes one time,,,LMAO that E-6 demanded I surrender up 50% of them to him,,, on the spot :lmao:(I ain't lying, they'd confiscated about 1/3rd of an complete M-60 belt feed outra' my wall locker( our guns were junked/worn out nam issues& I demanded spare parts from my Staff NCO in charge of the armoury (oh-ya!,,, I had a 'complete' spare barrel & operational feed cover, with several spare extractors, ejectors ,pins& springs, along with an operating rod that had a piece broken off its bolt retaining yoke,,,&I always kept a fifth of Jim Beam in my wall locker ( this was while I was in the FMF,,,though:thumbup:)

You look at the top rated movies on IMDB and you have:

  1. The Shawshank Redemption (1994) R | 142 min | Drama. ...
  2. The Godfather (1972) R | 175 min | Crime, Drama. ...
  3. The Dark Knight (2008) PG-13 | 152 min | Action, Crime, Drama. ...
  4. The Godfather: Part II (1974) ...
  5. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) ...
  6. Pulp Fiction (1994) ...
  7. Schindler's List (1993) ...
  8. 12 Angry Men (1957)
For the most part the stories are simple and easily understood.

"Pulp Fiction" is sorta bizarre too, but not to the point of "Apocalypse".

My favs are not on this list.

Outlaw Josey Wales

Saving Private Ryan

Lone Survivor

Might add American Sniper too although the storyline gets twisted in sniper vs sniper thingy.

What a strange list, according to me, and I would not have Shawshank on the top or maybe even on the list. I wonder what the criteria is for making the list? Same goes for Dark Knight and Pulp Fiction.

Citizen Kane has been considered at the top of the list for many years and maybe, other than 12 Angry Men, films from back in the day are no longer in the running? But The African Queen and Casablanca belong on that list. The Best Years of Our Lives and It's a Wonderful Life as well.

And what's the deal with leaving out Westerns? High Noon, Shane and The Unforgiven? And if we're going to use the most times played, I offer The Outlaw Josey Wales for consideration.

The list is like all other rankings, based on opinions with not one more important than the other.

Not really, those are his tastes, not ours. If he didn't like it, he didn't like it.

If we all put our top 10's up here, I'd bet we'd have more different movies than the same ones. I think the only two slam dunks might be The Godfather and II and while I consider Coppola a great filmmaker, he did put his daughter in III and flat ruined what might have been the greatest trilogy of all time. But LotR takes that prize. Again, my opinion.

And if I am doing my top 10, I am cheating and packaging Godfather and II and the LotR trilogy and Alien and Aliens, why doesn't the greatest horror/sci fi franchise ever made get their due?

You flat out nailed it over the entranceways threshold with that African Queen flick Coach:thumbup:
And while the Shawshank redemption flick was a worthy viewing,,, that Flight of the Phoenix unloads the big pizzles drenching fizzle all over it ,if Shawshank is even to be considered in the running of a "guy/ camaraderie",,, er,,,& definitely in the non chick flick category of hairy chestednesso_O

I had received that Marcus Luttrell's book of "after action accounts" as a Christmas present when it hit publication,,, fantastically sobering read,,,he'd went from hardcore "wet&Sandy" gungy navy seal, to chewing on the best "raw green opium tobacco of pain nomore medication, that the ever foresightful great creator bestowed upon mankind's planet,,,o_O

The criteria is simply how folks rate the film... No more, no less.

I think what gets folks about Shawshank is that's it's a powerful, yet simple (and believable) story combined with terrific acting where the main character wins us over by surviving the brutality he deals with throughout the film to eventually win the day and the bad guys get there's.

If folks love anything, it's a character they've become emotional invested in come out on top after being crapped on for most of the film.

The ending of the film where Andy and Red finally meet as free men leaves most feeling terrific.

I think people love that film because of that.
