1992 Cowboys Roster - What If 2019 Cap Rules?

Jerry was the #1 owner pushing for a salary cap...

Thanks a lot, Jerry. Anyway, it is what it is. The old system isn't coming back, so Jerry needs to adapt to the current league and how to win today rather than how to win in the 90s. IMO, he's adapted some in that he finally realized you can't overpay to keep players past their prime. New England has created the blueprint for what works now.

They let Ken Norton and Thomas Everett go after the 92 season and the cap didn't start until 94.
If Jimmy had stayed he likely would have continued to replace veteran with draft picks with or without the cap.

Haley and Novacek were cut or retired because of injury issues (back surgery for Haley and back issues for Novacek as well).

The 94 season NFC championship was doomed by the Erik Williams car wreck injury.

Jerry cut WR Jimmy Smith in 94 because Smith won an appeal when Jerry tried to pay him 100K instead of the 350K he was due from being on the Non-Football Injury list in 93 due to appendicitis.

If Jimmy had stayed and Jerry had let him run the football operations like Jimmy had done for 5 years, then the cap wouldn't have been a big problem for the Cowboys.

Those are great points. Jerry's number 1 bonehead move was pissing off and then letting go a two-time Super Bowl champion HC. That was worse than the Joey Galloway trade. I do think Jerry, with help from his son Stephen, has been making smarter moves lately, but he's not the football guru I believe he thinks he is.

Stephen is running the football operations now.]

Both Jerry and Stephen do local radio shows weekly during the season.

It appears the last time that Jerry over-ruled Stephen was in 2015 when Jerry caved in and gave Dez the big contract. Stephen wanted to limit that contract or just keep him on the Franchise Tag.

They've differed in opinions expressed to the media often but the Cowboys have ended up going with the decisions that Stephen expressed as his preference repeatedly.

Zack Martin over Manziel.
Not trading up for Paxton Lynch.

It makes sense that the only person an egomaniac would want to outshine him would be one of his own offspring.

Jimmy wanted personal glories, no matter the cost...

Uh, the pissed on effect was the other way around...for the record.

Whatever went down, Jerry and Jimmy and found a winning partnership. I expected them to find a way to get along so they could keep that going. I was pretty upset with them that they failed to do that.

Btw, cool photo of Staubach.

He f
He refused to play some of the Minnesota guys that were better . He blew up the season and purpose at least that's what he says. How we finishing the standings was how many more or less draft picks we got from Minnesota. If the league knew he did that today . they would maybe fine us picks . Believe that's the story

So that's why they specifically made arguments like, "Do you want the Cowboys to be Super Bowl champs every year?" I heard that over and over to justify the new rules. Then when the new rules went into place, what happened was the Cowboys got dismantled, exactly as they said. But, no, I'm sure they just kept saying that without meaning it and then when we kept losing players like Ken Norton and Mark Stepnoski, that had nothing to do with the new rules. Just a coincidence. I'm sure glad I'm cured of believing in dumb conspiracies. Thanks.
Sad . Believe the propaganda. It was about Revenue so all markets could share

Norton left after the 93 season via free agency.

Yes, good catch.

That means Jimmy had a replacements in place 2 years ahead (Roberts Jones for Norton at MLB and Dixon Edwards for Robert Jones at OLB).

Has the league ever fined an NFL team for tanking?

A review of those players obtained from Minn does not really support this concept.

They ended up with 3 players from Minn on the roster.

LB Jesse Solomon
LB David Howard
CB Issiac Holt

RB Darrin Nelson - Traded away immediately.
DE Alex Stewart - Practice Squad then cut.

The Cowboys had legit starters at LB ahead of Solomon/Howard:
Jack Del Rio
Eugene Lockhart
Ken Norton

With regards to Issac Holt, the Cowboys starters at CB were:
Everson Walls
Robert Williams

Holt was likely better than Robert Williams; although...
Holt had only started 1 of 5 games for Minn before the trade.

Holt did play significant snaps as the 3rd CB.

They didn't really need to try to lose in 1989.
Irving missed 10 games.
Aikman missed 5 games.

Players from 1989 team that remained for 1992:
WR Michael Irvin
QB Troy Aikman
P Mike Saxon
OL Nate Newton
OL Kevin Gogan
OL Mark Tuinei
OL Mark Stepnoski
LB Ken Norton
FB Daryl Johnston
DL Tony Tolbert
DL Jim Jeffcoat
DB Ray Horton
DB Robert Williams
DB Issiac Holt
DB Bill Bates

No but they have fined teams for cheating. .and Jimmie Johnson said that's what he did . he blew the season on purpose. That's kind of cheating. Or at least borderline. That's why the players from Minnesota hated us and I believe it was Jimmy Johnson himself who stated this. Yes I refuse to play those players so we could blow the season and get higher draft picks. So it wasn't me my cowboy brother

Jimmy = TV Guy (Now)
See: Shtick & Dramatize

If you review the details of my previous reply, it's debatable that the 3 players from Minn were better than the starters.

If you were an adult back then, you should know that they didn't need to "try" to lose in 89.

Yeah I know what you're saying. I kind of wish Jimmy wouldn't open his mouth sometimes just like Michael Irvin LOL adult mentally or adult an actual age comparison LOL
