For those of us under 35, are the Commanders a rival to you?

Yeah ever since Diron Talbert ran his mouth and hit caused Staubach concussion. Of course they have been pitiful for a quarter century.

umm, I'm past 35 and last year's 1st Cowboy Commander game alone ticks me off big time ... a flag on the long snapper - really?

that was deliberate and because of the rivalry - because it didn't happen in a playoff game doesn't make it less slimy

It goes back to the 70s with George Allen/Tom Landry. When I was a kid this was THE NFL rivalry.
:lmao: precisely to the exact, isn't an understatement,,, er,,,to yer' statement:lmao:

i was born in 86 so I have no memory of the Commanders hay day in the late 80s/early 90s.

They’ve never been good the same year as Dallas has that I remember. Always a 4-6 seed on the few years they did get in.

So I have no hatred towards them. Philly and the Giants on the other hand are a different story. As are GB and SF from the time in the 90s and Rodgers this decade.

Another team who I don’t have any care towards are the Steelers. The one meaningful game the two teams have played I remember was a 2nd half route in SB XXX
Dude,Man you really should spend a couple of hours wandering around down in the seldom ventured

My father was a Commanders fan, which automatically drove me straight to Cowboy's fandom as a kid, once I could fully appreciate his personal contempt & great disdain he'd held towards Dallas&all things Texas:starspin::thumbup::starspin: ,,,although ,I think he'd grew up idolizing Sammy Baugh,,,I just remember him talking to the t.v. whenever Sonny Jurgensen /Billy Kilmer would be quarter backing the skins, while he was drinking blue ribbon beers kicked back on the couch on sundays:lmao:

Still a rival. Even in recent years when they didn't have good teams, the Commanders played over their heads against us. That's one of the things that make rivalries great.

During the Romo era for example, the offense was superior to the defense. But that script was flipped in games against the Skins, who always gave Romo fits and our defense usually had to save the day.

The Commanders would blitz a side with numbers, and we generally had no answers.

Also, it seemed that it was the Commanders that figured out that even if Moss had little separation from Newman, you could throw it up to him anyway. Terrance wasn't going to make a play on the ball.

Gurode had Haynesworth's number, and Haynesworth cleated him in the face when Gurode's helmet came off. But it's not like the Commanders fans didn't think Haynesworth was a scumbag too.

But Tony had maybe his best game ever, playing with a slipped disc for a come from behind win.

It's been a while since I cared about the Commanders. Except for Haynesworth, I've generally had respect for their defensive front seven.

It's interesting the difference a generation makes. As a kid in the 70s the two teams I hated most were Washington and Pittsburgh.

The Eagles, Niners, and Giants joined the list later.

I dislike the Sheagles, Littles and the Foreskins. I only hate the Littles. I'm over 35. My hate started with the Tuna. Now if we are talking about fans and not the team itself I hate the Sheagles fans which started with the cheering of Michael Irvin getting hurt. The Foreskins rivalry was media driven IMO.

I do feel for you youngins because you missed one of the great rivalries in NFL history. And it wasn't just on the field, George Allen was the only HC to ever get in Landry's head. He'd stand across the field and grin at Tom, licking his hands and rubbing them together and Landry would just give him the stare and look away. But you could tell he knew Allen was looking at him.

Landry was convinced that Allen had spies and asked Schramm to buy out the hotel with rooms next to the practice field and had heard, probably started by Allen, that one of their scouts was going to climb one of the trees next to the field and Landry had them cut it down. That scout was an ex out of shape OL that weighed 300lbs! He couldn't step up on a curb much less climb a tree.

There's nothing like that today, PHL is a pain but nothing like the Skins were with Theismann, Riggins and Talbert, the DL that slugged Staubach.

The only other rivalry that came close for me was KC-OAK with Madden and Stram but that one was on the field but it would get nasty. There were some similarities with the Boys-Skins in that Stram was the sharp dresser, like Landry, for a football coach and Madden always looked like he slept in his clothes and Allen just dressed like a football coach. There were many contrasts in both rivalries.

The Cowboys-Commanders are still my highlight games of the season and I wish they played every TDay. It was always more special when they squared off on TDay.
Lot of that hate word floating around this thread. :)

The Commanders have better fans than Giants and Eagles. Probably because they aren't as northerly.

The skins have always been a rival, but I considered the eagles more of one in the 2000s due to the lopsided beat downs we took early in McNabbs career. At one point it was nice knowing the skins were a free win as we had held like 8 or 9 consecutive wins against them and I hoped that never ended.

Then the Giants became a rival when we gave away our game, leading to their Super Bowl run...

I'm 31. The only time I have ever considered the Commanders to be a "rival" of any sort was in the 2005 season, when they swept Dallas (one of those games being the horrific Monday Night Triplets Ring of Honor game where they stunned the Cowboys 14-13 on two deep Santana Moss bombs.)

Other than that, they have been utterly irrelevant. I have usually considered the Giants to be the Cowboys' true rival, during the years of 2006-2016.
Someone want to explain why Newman wasn't covering Moss?

Yes.

1. Bunch of older family members hating them
2. Watching older film
3. NFC East rival.

Everyone had trouble covering Moss but he had the height and speed to give Newman fits.

Also, we avoided drafting him and he took it as a personal affront.

Needless to say, he usually made us pay! :(

It was turning into a good rivalry again during the Sean Taylor/Joe Gibbs era but sadly we know how that ended..

I'm 28, and besides being division games, I wouldn't call it a "rivalry".

I get the most enjoyment from beating the Giants (I'm from NY)

But I would say our biggest rivalry has been the eagles, and maybe throw in the packers.

I never thought much of the Giants until the mid 80's. Before that the Giants weren't even worth my trouble. lol

I’ll be 38 end of this week and heck yes it’s a rivalry. The hit that took out Troy should be enough for you guys to hate them. Go watch some history. Go listen to Joe Theisman call a game. After listening to Joe talk for 5 minutes go watch LT rip his leg apart bet you laugh and I’m the type I don’t wish injury but I like that one. I hated McNabb and watching him go to the Skins and flop was priceless. See the Skins all excited about Bob Griffin then seeing their hearts ripped out was joyful.
