They're essentially the same player, except Dak is a bit beefier and Alex has more arm talent. Their play styles are very similar. You won't get much in the way of good performances (which is not the same as results) from either unless the talent around them is good.

He led the entire league in int % which is important because he was attempting more passes than Dak his rookie season (500v450). Dak’s QBR his rookie year was 78. alex’s In 2017? 67. Seems to go in Dak’s favor overall. But you know what the problem is?

2017 was Alex’s last full year before the injuy. Rookie year Dak Prescott isn’t coming back, he’s regressed and it’s provable. His QBR last year even with 6 games of Amari Cooper? 58. Woof. Alex’s last full season was superior to Dak’s. That’s the point and he’s absolutely right.

Smith's deep ball was phenomenal that one year. Every other year he's been an inefficient deep passer. Admittedly Prescott doesn't take a ton of deep shots either, but he has been efficient when he has.

Let’s be accurate about it though.

Alex Smith was trash early in his career. He was absolutely terrible.

Alex Smith improved and got better as his career went on. This improvement didn’t really happen until he was in the league for like 5 or 6 years.

Dak’s level of play during his first 3 seasons. Was similar to Alex smith’s Level of play after he was in the league for like 6+ plus seasons and made dramatic
Improvements during that time.

So if he wants to compare Dak to Alex Smith, that’s fine. But if he was being honest about it. He would point out that Dak as a rookie/young player was playing as good as Alex Smith when Alex was at his peak after years and years of league experience.

You have to remember that Smith was a #1 pick who went to the team bad enough to have the #1 pick. As such you can't really compare Smith's first three seasons to Dak's. Context matters.

Personally I think that generally speaking they are comparable in overall quality but have different strengths and weaknesses.

Today. Right now. I'd take Dak for his youth and health. If we were choosing between fourth year Smith and fourth year Dak I'd take Smith.

I do know as of right now, all else equal, I'd take Dak over Smith due to his age.

Still, you guys that keep using Dak's rookie year and saying he was just a rookie to get extra credit, should now be just saying "Dak's best statistical year"....which was and still is his rookie year.
You no longer get extra credit for "rookie stats" if those stats mark your high point. It's now just "his best statistical year"...period.
The two are now one in the same.

Usually when you’re drafted #1 to come into a horrible situation that has to be navigated for a few years. It’s not apples to apples to compare numbers or W/L. You’d have to extensively review film to fairly make that comparison.

Last I checked...Dak came into a team that won 4 games the year before.

The QB rating you cited is the ESPN rating system, not the standard one, but if you want to go with that, Alex Smith has only had 2 years in his 13 years in the league that were better than that. By the standard QB rating system, Dak had a 96.9 rating, and again, by that rating system, Smith has only had 2 years out of 13 that were better.
