Bart Scott: "Dak Prescott hasn't even reached Alex Smith's level"

The QB rating you cited is the ESPN rating system, not the standard one, but if you want to go with that, Alex Smith has only had 2 years in his 13 years in the league that were better than that. By the standard QB rating system, Dak had a 96.9 rating, and again, by that rating system, Smith has only had 2 years out of 13 that were better.

It doesn’t matter what Alex Smith did 10 years ago. Bart Scott prefers a healthy Alex Smith TODAY. Players can evolve you know. What have you done for me lately. Alex is a way better QB today than he was in SF, and Dak has slightly regressed as his career has gone along. I don’t know why, D’s Figuring him out or he’s getting complacent, but Those things matter.

And I didn’t use the standard QB rating system because A. It’s more fallible, and B. Alex beats him even worse with it.

1SB win > all the empty stats of Smith, Prescott, Romo, Marino, Kelly, Meredith, Morton, Tarkenton, whomever.

Until if/when Dak leads an NFL team to a SB win, he’ll remain just another QB who didn’t get it done.

Pro sports are about winning...everything else is yada-yada BS.

Since you included Romo in empty stat list you get a like from me.

I'm a Dak zealot but only to the extent that he stays on his current trajectory. To label him another "QB who didn't get it done" is a bit presumptuous though considering he still has years ahead of him to prove he can get it done.

That's really the only main thing a have a problem with.

Dak is impressive , and a good QB ... but $30 million a year !?

Brady just resigned for $22 million .

If Tom wanted 35mil would the Pats pay it? Why not make the most? He is one of the best and has more sb rings than anyone else.

And the owner has been busted in more stings than anyone else. I just had to go there.

Some of us wholeheartedly disagree. He can stay in Michigan. Maybe he'll manage to beat Ohio State someday? :muttley:

some of you I guess too comfortable with 1 playoff win here and there

As much as I think Dak has significant issues with accuracy beyond 4 yards, I'd take him over Smith as well.

This is accurate and true.

But...

There are concerns I have for Dak.

Some games, playoff games in particular you may get only one or two big play down the field shots.

He’s making me think we need six just so he could maybe connect on two of them.

Honestly I seevit costing us a playoff game... as he is right now.

You have to remember that Smith was a #1 pick who went to the team bad enough to have the #1 pick. As such you can't really compare Smith's first three seasons to Dak's. Context matters.

Personally I think that generally speaking they are comparable in overall quality but have different strengths and weaknesses.

Today. Right now. I'd take Dak for his youth and health. If we were choosing between fourth year Smith and fourth year Dak I'd take Smith.

You’re right. Meanwhile Dak was drafted by a team with the #4 overall pick. A much much better squad.

In all seriousness though. Dak was way better than Smith was in his early years. Bad team or not, if you remember Smith playing as a young QB. He was horrible.

I don't care what Bart Scott says. That's a personal preference, and he is entitled to his just like anyone else. But as for the stats your are using - actually misusing and misrepresenting - that's something else.

So, let's take a look at the "what have you done for me lately" stats you talked about based on what you say is the more reliable ESPN rating system ...

Alex Smith played 10 games last year and had a QB rating of 53.8, and Dak's rating was 58.6. In 2017, Smith's career best year, he had a 67 rating, which is still behind Dak's 69.5 rating in 2017. In 2016, Smith had a 58.0 rating, and Dak had a 78.8 rating. So, for the last 3 straight years, Dak's QB rating has surpassed Smith's, yet here you are claiming Smith's QB rating is better.

You should look closer at the stats before making claims, because these just bit your argument in the butt.

Smith's deep ball was phenomenal that one year. Every other year he's been an inefficient deep passer. Admittedly Prescott doesn't take a ton of deep shots either, but he has been efficient when he has.
2018:
18-52
735 yards
8 TD’s
2 INT’s
106.57 passer rating
Somewhat in Smith's defense, he never really had a bonafide deep threat during his career until Tyreek Hill. He did have a young Crabtree in SF, but their offensive system didn't utilize the deep ball much, especially with Singeltary. He played with mostly jag WRs in conservative systems. He became a dink and dunker as much out of system and circumstance, but given a real deep threat he showed that he was capable.

I think we're seeing some of that with Dak. We didn't have a bonafide deep threat until Cooper and a now emerging Gallup. I think we will see an improved deep ball game, now that we actually have players with that skillset.

If he wants to make this comparison. That’s fine.

Let’s be accurate about it though.

Alex Smith was trash early in his career. He was absolutely terrible.

Alex Smith improved and got better as his career went on. This improvement didn’t really happen until he was in the league for like 5 or 6 years.

Dak’s level of play during his first 3 seasons. Was similar to Alex smith’s Level of play after he was in the league for like 6+ plus seasons and made dramatic
Improvements during that time.

So if he wants to compare Dak to Alex Smith, that’s fine. But if he was being honest about it. He would point out that Dak as a rookie/young player was playing as good as Alex Smith when Alex was at his peak after years and years of league experience.

Great post!

Dak's arm is stronger than Romo's ever was.
When people talk about QB arm strength, they typically don't mean how far the QB can throw the ball.

Favre bullets were an example of arm strength. How much velocity they can get on a ball, how quickly it gets to the receiver accurately.

Actually Elway, Favre, Marino.... receivers will attest to their arm strength lol...

I thought Romo was great... But, he wasn't big arm strength, and neither is Dak, neither was Aikman, or Staubach.

Arm strength, people get confused with distance a QB can throw.

People critiquing Dak for his perceived limitations is one thing.

What gets me is people who pull for the likes of Bridgewater, who was a soft-armed dink-dunk artist with worse stats than Dak across the board and a whopping 17-12 record (0-1 postseason.) Bridgewater's best season he threw 14 touchdowns, in spite of having Adrian Peterson in the backfield and Stefon Digs, Mike Wallace and Kyle Rudolph as weapons.

its going to be fun to revisit these threads when dak is in the mvp talk later in the season

I did, and Alex has been better. Alex’s dip in production can be attributed to Washington. And 2017 Dak isn’t the current Dak, what he’s done from 2018 to now is.

What is Dak’s excuse for yearly regressing QBR? Laziness? Lack of urgency? Good QBs don’t get worse as they approach their prime.

What is Dak’s excuse for yearly regressing QBR? Laziness? Lack of urgency? Is he STILL coasting on the success he had his rookie season? Good QBs don’t get worse as they approach their prime.

You keep saying this, but the stats don't back you up. And, after all, you are the one that brought up the QBR metric to support you, and now you want to back away from it.

On top of that, you are cherry picking 2017 out of a 13 year career and saying that one year representing 7.7% of his career is the only thing that matters, and the other 92.3% of his career is meaningless. And, at the same time, ignoring that even in that one year he had a lower QB rating than Dak.

And, another false comment on your claim Dak has regressed every year. The reality is between 2017 and 2018 he only regressed in the one metric you cherry picked. Otherwise, he had more yardage, higher yards per attempt and yards per catch, higher completion %, fewer INT's, and the same number of TDs in 2018 than he had in 2017. He also improved by traditional QB rating.
