I have been pondering this issue for some time. As I see it, from Dak’s point of view, what is his real risk of loss if he signs now, vs. waiting until after this year. Here is some of his risk, although something unforeseen can happen:

1. He suffers catastrophic injury (career ending)
2. He suffers substantial, but not career ending injury
3. He gets exposed for not being as good as perceived now.
4. The market dynamic changes and there is downward pressure on the market.
5. Unknown factors

Dak “could” conceivably play on his current contract and insure himself for catastrophic injury, but I have no idea what that might cost. The policy cost may be more than he would make this year. He would also have to consider the cost of that policy vs any increase he may get next year.

If #2 happens, what would he lose and would his insurance policy cover it?

#3 Is a significant risk of loss because it is largely subjective. Let’s suppose Zeke holds out and the Cowboys don’t perform well with Kellen Moore as OC. How much could that affect Dak’s market. This might be his biggest risk.

If #4 happens, he would have zero control over it. The NFL could be rocked by scandal and fans could go a different direction. Downward pressure is almost a certainty at some point.

Concussion issues etc. can come into play regarding the market as well. Moreover, the owners hold all the cards, ultimately, in player negotiations. There are a lot of ways for the players to get “pencil whipped” by the owners in the same way that Tiger Woods can’t beat me in golf if I’m keeping score.

#5 There is always unknown risk. He could hold out and if everything goes well he may be holding all the cards. But if he gambles, and misses, he misses out on a life changing pay day. That’s a pretty big pill to swallow. He wasn’t paid money like Tank was. He has been drawing Walmart wages for the entirety of his contract.

The other side is gambling on himself that he can substantially increase his value through his play this season. Not sure I'd take that bet but that is a component that I'm sure he is considering. Still makes sense for him to lock in a long term contract at great money regardless this season though, IMO.

Injury isn't a big risk for quarterbacks, especially for rocks like Dak. They aren't judged by "losing a step" like other positions.

#3 is real though.

Dak will be able to at least maintain the level of play we have seen from him the past three years and likely will be somewhat better. His Agent knows the QB market is on a steep, ascending trajectory and players in that position are way overvalued. SCORE! Dak will get paid.

And he is making lots of money in endorsements.. Probly more than 10 million this year alone.

This is a game of confidence. And what more confidence can you have, betting on yourself yes play the season out have a superior season collect your paycheck. Yes I understand all the other scenarios that can possibly happen. But I think the kid is a winner so. Because that's all we do. And I don't care who gets the credit. He's the guy behind Center while we're doing it

Yes. There are two sides the coin for sure. I’m just looking at his risk of loss only in this thread.

#3 is real? Crazy to consider it actually since Dak finally has a real QBs coach who truly is improving his footwork and passing mechanics, the Oline is healthy, along with having a good backup Oline, the WR and TE group is much better this season, plus new O-Coordinator Kellen Moore is likely to open things up more, especially in the passing department.

This is mostly speculation at this point, but hopefully correct. If Moore wasn't a real QB coach who could help Dak, will he be able to run an entire offense?

One additional risk is a move that is perceived by the fans as too greedy can lower his ability to get endorsements in the future.

Let's hope Kellen Moore is better at playcalling than he was at correcting a QB's footwork and downfield accuracy.

Imagine being set for life just from telling Albertson customers to wear their jerseys on gameday.

There's no risk on Dak's part. I don't see him having a career ending injury. Who's the last qb to do that at 26?

Bet on yourself. Worst case scenario I think he plays like he did last season and he will still get paid. Best case? He could get paid even more than what he's asking for now.

Doesn't even matter. If he wins a Super Bowl nobody will care how much he gets paid. If he doesn't win a Super Bowl....well people will hate him but he will be rich so who cares lol. Nothing to lose. Nobody is going to like Dak if he doesn't win the Super Bowl but doesn't get paid much lol. People want to replace Dak right now and he only gets 2 million a year lol.

It'll be fascinating, for sure. What happens if Zeke is absent and Dak struggles the first few weeks? Is it really far-fetched to envision a couple 170-yard passing efforts that result in losses?

Would be mightily hard to justify handing such a QB $30+ million.

But the reverse is certainly true, as well. If Zeke is gone and this team doesn't skip a beat, it's a powerful bargaining chip for Dak.

Dak was very close to being exposed had at least 7 pick 6's dropped including one in the Rams playoff game. Honestly the dude has had lady luck on his side since the start from Tony going down to Zeke starting along side him.
Personally as I know luck is not forever this coming season EXPOSED will be the word around town as they say as Dak's luck by hook or by crook is due to run out!
Esp if Zeke isn't playing from the start of the season.
