What does it say about training camp if a holdout can be top form in week 1

NO this is not another Zeke specific thread but overall about how the preseason and training camp are set up.

Last year Earl Thomas and Aaron Donald played well after holding out. This year is Zeke and eventually Melvin Gordon’s turn.

If players can not miss a beat week 1 after not being there all summer, what’s that say as to how long preseason should be for veterans?

Players who miss TC have a tendency to get injured ,,, remember the long holdout by Jamal Anderson with the Falcons,,, weeks upon weeks of drama and media angst followed by a grudging contract and immediate injury.

What makes you think any hold out can be in top form week one?

It says that training camp ain't what it used to be due to the limitations put in place by the CBA.
They are all missing a beat in week 1.
This is why it takes all the way up until Thanksgiving week to figure out what kind of team you have.

Same thing happened with Dez after he held out and signed his contract late. Broke a bone in his foot IIRC. Holdouts can't be good for a player when it comes to health and performance. There has to be a happy medium.

Hopefully the team eases Zeke back into action, let the other backs get most of the playing time against the Giants and Redstinks.

Training camp used to be where players went to get in shape because they spent the offseason working other jobs.

Today's millionaire athletes train most of the year, OTAs, etc.. They're not selling insurance to make ends meet.

I agree with you on the injury. During training camp every time a player tweaks something there is an entire staff dedicated to the healing process. They have rehabbing with range of motion and weights, with trainers that are actually licensed in physical therapy. Teams have a staff of Drs and Chiropractors. Dietitians cook meals that are player specific.

I don't think players have the same excellent training when they hold-out. I am sure Zeke trained hard.

Zekes Day:
11:00 AM -roll out of bed - shower
11:30 AM - take something for hangover, eat breakfast
12:00 - begin training
Sprint drills
sled-pulls
Weight training

1:30 talk to agent

2:00 sand training

2:30 Lunch and pool, netflix and chill

3:30 Piña colada and 4 wheeling, and other excursions

4:30 Back at pool talking to the ladies.

5:30 netflix and chill

11:00 pm night out in Cabo, binge drinking, binge eating, then netflix and chill

6:00 am- Ambien and ready for sleep.

It says Training Camp and most preseason games in its current form are outdated. Today’s players stay in great shape. TC could be pared down to 3-4 weeks, including only 2 preseason games. College football does not have preseason games and somehow they are able to get ready in about a month.

Zeke won't be in top form

Owners have been trying to eliminate preseason games and add regular-season games for a while now. That should tell us all we need to know about the preseason.

Training camp isn't what it used to be. Based on the limited amount of hitting, essentially extending OTAs so that teams can install their offense or defense would be enough. The preseason is more about evaluating young players than it is about getting established players ready for the season. That's basically why the Rams didn't even have their starters play in the preseason.

I think there should be a rookie/young vets camp and have the starters/select veterans join them a few weeks before the regular season. That way teams can figure out which young players to add to the roster.

You watch the first couple of games this season. That'll tell you why they need preseason. Because they come out looking like it still preseason. I want to come out of the gate like I know what I'm doing not sloppy

I wouldn't say it's a tendency. Some players like the OP mentioned are diligent about staying in shape, others aren't and some players are just unfortunate. Broken bones have little to do with missing training camp.

I believe that’s the fault of NFL coaches who are stuck in the past getting ready for the season. Why are college FB coaches able to get their teams ready to play with less time?

I also think the collective bargaining agreement has something to do with the way they practice the whole thing isn't right if you ask me . That's why many fans actually like college better than the NFL. Not me I love the heart attack games. But I am a big Notre Dame fan
