Turns out Zeke had enough leverage

Couldn't read the article so I have no idea what it says but, I don't really get this thread. Enough for what? This actually sounds like what Jerry offered all along. Maybe more up front money or something but I guess I just don't see how either side got over here. It's a good contract, lots of money early but average salary is very reasonable, for the players talent. Short term with team options for later years. I just think this is a very good deal for everybody and I don't really see how leverage changed anything. Seriously, I really don't.

I think how it was structured was the sticking point. Based on reports during the holdout when they claimed it was close it was how the contract was structured not the amount

I always said so. There would have been no negotiations if he didn't.

Jerry said, two years ago, that they wanted to get another deal done to lock up Zeke soon. I mean, where are you guys getting this stuff from? It was always the teams intent to get Zeke resigned. There was always going to be a negotiation. It was just a matter of how soon, according to terms in the CBA. I guess you can maybe say that if you know Jerry wanted to get a deal done, then maybe there was some small amount of leverage there but the deal is really not all that different then what was offered early on, from what I can tell.

I think it was a pretty good deal for both sides. Jerry gets the headlines. Garrett gets the Ewok. Zeke gets security. Stephen gets some outs if he needs them down the line. Fans get to watch the team with offseason turmoil in the rearview. Trolls get to act like paying good players helps their sorry teams. Talking heads get to point to fake numbers tacked on at the end to furrow their brows.

I laughed at those who thought he had no leverage. He was a 4th round pick who has proven to be among the best at his position so the team wants to retain him at least through his prime. The team may like Pollard a lot but thinking he can replace Zeke as a rookie is foolish. The team thinks they are stacked and have a good shot to win it all. Not having Zeke diminishes those chances greatly. You put all those things together and you have Zeke's leverage. The teams wants him for all 16 games this year and doesn't want to ruin the relationship for the future so they will come to the table and get something done. It was that simple.

Clearly, the contract is not different then what was reported all along, in terms of dollars. I'm sure that the sticking point was probably upfront money and how much. I'd imagine the team didn't want to do that again because they saw what happened last time they did that. In return, I'd guess the team got year to year concessions in the last 4 years of the deal. I don't know for sure but that's what I would guess.

Well, when you stop laughing, please correct your post to say that "he was the 4th overall pick" and not a 4th round pick. Gonna help out your credibility like 10 fold, seriously.

I always figured the team would re-sign him. It wouldn't have happened until next year though. Zeke forced the issue. It sort of surprised me but I understand why he did it. Jerry could have told him to stay out. He wasn't going to negotiate. Melvin Gordon is the one with no leverage. The Chargers won't even talk with him. And Zeke probably wouldn't have had much leverage on a different team. Jerry didn't want to risk the season on a what if. In the end both parties got what they wanted. It was a win win.

Sure Zeke had leverage in that he has accounted for 47% of the offense. Cowboys had leverage of having him under contract for 2 more season. In the end the 2 sides got a deal done. I never doubted that this would not get done.
