I remember knowing the Cowboys would compete for a championship the early 90s

What’s missing is the head coach, as witnessed by the horrible game plan yesterday. They’ve got everything else;

- Dominant offensive and defensive lines
- A franchise QB1, RB1 and WR1
- Talented young, innovative coaches in Kellen Moore and Kris Richard
- A dominant top 5 defense
- Playmakers who are always around the ball

This team still might win a Super Bowl but I wouldn’t bet on it, not with Garrett as coach unfortunately.

2019 Cowboys with Zeke could not break the Saints 20+ game streak of not allowing a RB to rush over 100 yards.

The 1992 Cowboys with Emmitt ended the Eagles 54 game streak of not allowing a 100 yard rusher.

This team is not similar to the 92 Cowboys.

The 92 Cowboys could call the same run play the 2019 Cowboys called yesterday and have more success. However, they also called sweeps, tosses, counters, and draws for Emmitt as well.

The 92 Cowboys defense was stout and had a no bend and no break philosophy.

The 92 Cowboys special teams especially on punt and kickoff returns were a lot better.

The 92 Cowboys offense could exploit teams most of the time through the air when they ganged up on the run. Irvin was a true #1 WR who demanded the ball even when he was double teamed.

And of course, the 92 Cowboys had the best head coach who liked to dominate opposing teams. I.e., it was rare for the 92 Cowboys to get outcoached for an entire game.

It has similarities and some differences. So I both agree and disagree with ya my friend. Harper went to Tampa and not the Commanders? Yeah, I kinda didn't pay any attention to him after he left our team. Thanks for that correction.

I do wish our special teams were special. As Jimmy Johnson said, "We have to win all 3 phases of the game". But, where is that 3rd phase in 2019?

I can't say if the special teams are good or not this year because of that change of moving that kickoff up. Or, it is 'fair catch' after 'fair catch' on punt returns. We can never attempt to take a return back.

What's next: Turning this game into flag football so a player doesn't get hit?

Football isn't the same as it used to be.

1996 was pre-free agency and the salary cap had just started a couple of years earlier.

Both those things changed the game significantly.

True. And it swung the pendulum away from us.

I too believe in strong special teams play. Maybe the confidence on punt returns just isn't there yet. Also, when there are returns, it seems like flags go flying nowadays.

Free agency ruined the game. (Insert the quote by Bruce Willis from "The last boy scout" here. "Free Agency ruined the game".

Now it's like the magic at the end of the movie "now you see me". They keep moving around until nobody knows where they are at. Then they turn into money and disappear.

Morning Sarge.

The meaning is my thought on free agency. Some players "get their money and disappear". Or just "leave so they can turn into money". Just a play on words.

Is that what you meant by the head scratching smile? Or is the gif not showing :)

I use to like watching that 3rd element. Special teams. Kick returns or punt returns. It's few and far between for us this season.

As I think back to the early/mid 90s, I remember knowing confidently that the Cowboys were going to be right there to compete for the championship.

They had everything: a great coach (Jimmy Johnson), three/four/five REAL super stars, solid supporting players and players that respected, and feared, their coaches.
Jimmy's championship teams showed up every game READY to play.
.
I haven't felt that "love'n feel'n" since 1996. Age, and off the field issue, caught to them. They were never competitive again.
.
I don't feel that vibe with this Cowboys team either. There's just something(s) missing. Mostly, I think it's chemistry, and players who don't really care about winning.

~sigh.....where have all the Cowboys gone?

What caught up with them wasn't age. It was the old fool thinking he could manage an NFL roster, and hire complete hacks as head coaches. Troy Aikman couldn't handle the dysfunction, it tore him down, Deion Sanders/Jerry Jones/Barry Switzer stamped out every bit of discipline on the team, and with Troy no longer being a top QB, we became just another team, living off the fumes of Jimmy's success.

If Jerry Jones had left Johnson alone instead of running off the best thing that ever happened to them, Tom Brady would still be trying to catch up to our trophy case.

Those days are gone forever. Jimmy was fired and the real brain behind the brawn left Dallas for New England. Belicheat and Jimmy are great friends.

COACHING!!!!
A team takes on the character of its coach. Jimmy Johnson was reckless, brash, cocky, meticulous, strategic and a winner! His teams took on his personality.
When Switzer arrived, it took on his character - bumbling, confused, just going through the motions. It was a miracle we made it to the Super Bowl (thanks to Green Bay knocking off San Francisco who killed us earlier that season). I believe if Jimmy Johnson were still coaching, we would have destroyed the Steelers in Super Bowl 30. Thankfully, we eked out a win.
I'm convinced if we get the right coach, he can take this team further than it has gone. The Cowboys remind me of those 90s Minnesota Vikings, who were talented but could never get over the hump, I say, because of coaching.

As kid, growing up in the 70's and 80's, I loved the Cowboys (still do) but back then, it wasn't about the regular season, we were in the playoffs and that was without question.. then the turn in mid 80's and it was downhill from there until 90's. While the 90's were great and the 3 out 4 SB, I never really felt the same about the Cowboys once Coach Tom left and really the way he left. I don't know if it is me getting older or what, but I just don't have the passion for the game like I did as a kid. I still enjoy the games and I do love this Franchise but it's not at the same level as it was with Coach Tom.

You think you were confident? Immediately after the 1992 playoff loss, I told all my friends that the Cowboys were going to win the next 3 Super Bowls. They all laughed at me. If not for a missed pass interference call on Deion Sanders, they would have done it....

“missed”..

that game, in those muddy conditions, despite the rough start, showed how great a passer Aikman was..

The 92 Cowboys are arguably the greatest team of all time and they are generally under-rated by many. By play-off time, they were absolutely dominant.

Jimmy brought the quick, side to side defense philosophy with him to Dallas, and his defenses covered ground like nobody’s business. Not just their starters, but they kept plugging guys in throughout the game.

Kevin Smith used to lock Jerry Rice down and of not for his back and Achilles injury would have been talked about alongside Deion as the two greatest cover corners in the history of the game.
