I am strongly considering giving up my fan hood and watching the NFL

I wouldn't quit football. It is the best excuse to avoid the relatives and chores. "Can't make the BBQ this week cousin, Cowboys are on TV!"
or "Sorry Hon. No craft fair this Sunday. It is a must win game." That alone is reason enough not to give up football.

I'm not a fair weather fan. I'll stick with Dallas. I am, however, finding myself watching other games less and less. I have found that Roger Goodell, penalty inconsistencies, Thursday night games, London games, etc. have added to the decline in quality of the games as a whole.

If you are quitting fandom of a team that is 3-3 after going to the playoffs in 2 of the last 3 years, its really not about the team.
no it's about the last 23. You must revel in mediocrity.

So, we have fans who don’t like the NFL unless the Cowboys are successful ? Lol

Either you're refusing to read or you're just being argumentative. For the record, I'm not going to go back and forth with you for the next 5 pages so you'll need to find someone else for that entertainment.

The NFL product isn't as good. Personally, I prefer the collegiate atmosphere. I don't care for dome stadiums with piped in music - give me open air and marching bands. At least Texas Stadium had the elements.

As for the Cowboys themselves, I think Stephen is nepotism personified. He's done NOTHING to earn my respect. At least Jerry's a self-made billionaire - I respect that. I don't find the two of them making themselves the center of the act enjoyable. I liked when the head coach was the face I saw, not the owner and his kid. When they're failing to reach the goal for decades, it only gets worse because they're not going anywhere or changing anything. Well, guess what? I don't owe them the rest of my life just because I loved Landry and Staubach when I was a kid.

I hear you. I am a guy with little patience. The stupidity irks me to no end. I gave up yelling at the TV years ago. Now I just simmer in silence.
Just sit and enjoy the games, it's not hard, you have no control of the team so no reason to get upset. I have watched since Eddie Lebaron was throwing passes, problem is you enjoyed and were spoiled by smart football guys running the show, winning at all levels year in and year out and coaches you could have faith in, now your paying the price for Jerry's ego and vanity and stupid decisions, just remember he will pass at some point until then is just more of the same stupid is as stupid does. . .

I am perhaps the sickest, most avid, perhaps even rabid, Cowboy fan around. Since 1966 ... really got on board at the Ice Bowl in Green Bay. Wore my Dallas toboggan cap while I was going to school in Wisconsin so you may imagine the actual blood I shed defending the Boys. I recall vividly the season when the "Bump & Run" rule was enacted and saw that it spelled death for "real football." Then, along came free agency and the salary cap. All that being said, I am still a Dallas Cowboys fan. I cannot help that - it is obviously a flaw in my character.

Now for the conundrum: I cannot abide the present-day NFL or, modern football at all for that matter. It does not even resemble the game I fell in love with. The rule changes, terrible officiating and the obvious "interest" the League Office has in determining game outcomes has numbed me to the point where I watch one game a week .. the Dallas game. I don't care about Garret or Jones or any of the rest of the stuff most on here get ballistic about. It is the way the game has devolved into something I no longer recognize. (This coming from a guy who had a standing $100 per week per game wager for the entire season for many, many years.)

I don't know what constitutes a penalty anymore and if the rest of you are honest with yourselves ... you don't either. So, for now, I'll continue watching 1 game per week. But I'm definitely not a "football fan" any longer.

Fact is the NFL doesn't care about the older fans it's about the young who don't know any better and will know no other view point than watered down flag football.

No way I give up my fanhood...............my allegiance is to the Dallas cowboys organization not to Jerry Jones or whoever owns them. I have great memories of this team long before Jerry came along.

Perfectly summed up my feelings as well

This too shall pass

Hadn't really thought about this perspective but you, Sir, are absolutely correct. It's just like music ... the kids (under 40), think they know ... but in reality, don't have the slightest clue.

Every year the interest is less and less. That has as much to do with the overall product as it does with the Cowboys.

It's a damn hard habit to let go of though. Harder than smoking. Memories of good times involving family, friends, holidays etc going back close to five decades.

The NFL is doing their damnedest to help me get over it though.

Bringing back Garrett would be the final straw for me.
Zordon, im there with you....on the edge....the ONLY thing that keeps me hanging on is the growing HOPE that the puppet head coach and his work-in-progress coaching staff are TERMINATED WITH EXTREME PREJUDICE ASAP

I can not stomach another season under the failing helm of that lifeless mannequin

It would have been inconceivable to me years ago but I am strongly considering giving up my fan hood and watching any NFL. I know it sounds maudlin and dramatic but I have lost so much joy for the league and have interests elsewhere that I actually think it could happen. I am a hockey maniac so it’s not like there is no winter sport for me. Cowboys aside I hate what this league has done and the games are unwatchable at times. I also have no hope that the Cowboys will re capture their glory as long as the Jones family owns them. I used to think things would be better when Jerry passed on but I think Stephen will be worse is some ways. Watching this team sleep walk through the last 3 games and Jerry defending this clown of a coach has me nearing the end of the line. I went Salmon fishing the last few days so really didn’t pay attention to the game. My buddy and I were actually howling over the Jets beating them. I dropped a note here early last week and all but predicted how that game could turn out. It did.

My doomsday clock is at about 11:50. Where are you guys at? Could you give up football?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
I guess if I was a fan, I would have left many years ago after Jerry Jones fired a back to back winning Super Bowl Head Coach in 1994 (Jimmy Johnson) and then ran off a 2 time winning with 3 appearances Super Bowl Head Coach in 2006 (Bill Parcells).

However, I liked the Dallas Cowboys because my Grandfather was a Cowboys fan, my father was a Cowboys fan, for the majority of my life the Dallas Cowboys had 20 straight winning seasons, 18 of 19 straight playoff appearances, 10 NFC Championship games, 8 Super Bowls, 5 NFL Super Bowl Championships, great players like Lilly, White, Too Tall, Martin, Pearson, Jordan, Howley, Dorsett, Irvin, Aikman, Smith, Allen, and characters like Hollywood, TO, The Sphinx, Dez, and "what do voluntary mean". The Dallas Cowboys are the only NFL team that had 2 Heisman trophy winners win a Super Bowl, have iconic numbers that are not retired but earned and relieved by new generations wearing 12, 22, 33, 88, 54, and 74.

Moreover, the Dallas Cowboys had iconic American leaders that showed and lived a moral centered life like Tom Landry and Roger Staubach. Name me an NFL team that has any better examples of being an American that the Dallas Cowboys with Tom Landry, and Medal of Freedom winner Roger Staubach?

So it is not what the Arlington Jonesboys are doing today. It is what the Dallas Cowboys are from the beginning...America's Team. So I put up with the incompetent so called GM, incompetent HC, and incompetent OC that have been and inconsistent incompetent mess since 1995. So I could understand why fans since 1995 want to jump ship.

However, "They are the Dallas Cowboys...America's Team".

After watching the corrupt NFL hand the game to the GB with 2 phantom "hand to the face" calls against the Lions, in which even the announcers were in disbelief.....i'm starting to truly believe it looks more and more like the WWE every week...almost pre-scripted, based on some algorithm that guarantees maximum future viewership and ad revenue

You have to just not take it too personally. Watching Jerry interview has become weekly comic relief for me. I look at it as a win-win for me. I get Jerry the comediant/football buffoon or a cowboy win. I'm entertained either way.
That's the key word there: entertainment. Watching the Dallas Cowboys is not entertaining to me right now, and recent history suggests things are not going to end well. I find it that I cannot sit through an entire game with this team right now. If things don't change, then they aren't gonna change.
