x......... do me a favor when you review the game tape.

Watch that red zone throw to Jeffrey that Wentz threw high. Awuzie was there to make the play if the ball was a bit lower, but if Wentz had thrown in lower and more in front, was there someone on the other side that could have made a play on the ball (like a safety or LB in that lane)? With a better throw, I thought that might be a TD.

I don't really love that coverage in that situation with the tall receivers.

Notice this is the personnel package where Jaylon replaces a DT and Joe Thomas replaces Jaylon at LB.

The Play
  • X.Woods was in front and to the inside of Jeffery at the point of the ball went over Jeffery's head.
  • The receiver coming through the middle area delayed Woods.
  • I'm not sure if Woods was over far enough if the pass had been lower and on a straight line to Jeffery.
  • Awuzie was going to slap the ball out if Jeffery caught it over his head.
  • I thought both LBs should get a deeper drop which would have given Woods more freedom to move towards Jeffery.
This is the broadcast view. The coaches film is not available yet.

It’s one of those, that’s easy to judge from watching at home.

You think, hey who do I help? I’m going to cover the middle where a mismatch of LVE on Goedart.

But I don’t play safety in the NFL. So nobody really knows how hard of a play that is to make if you’re not an elite safety

It's the same issue that they've had on multiple plays with season where they move the deep Safety to the side with multiple receivers.
  • Notice that Byron Jones is the boundary CB (side with 1 receiver) on this play.
  • Offenses have been attacking the boundary side of the field (side with 1 receiver), but normally it's Awuzie's side.
  • It was easy for the Eagles to know that the deep Safety would be on the "field side" where there were multiple receivers.
  • It's not a terrible match-up for LVE. It was a high degree of difficulty pass and catch over his 6-4 frame.
  • They had DLaw drop into coverage and looped a DT around on that side to keep Wentz in the pocket.

The Eagles score an average of 24.4 points per game.

We held them to 10 points in a very important game for both teams.

Got sacks and turnovers. We gave up the TD after 2 personal foul penalties that extended that drive entirely. There were mental issues throughout the whole defense on that drive. Things got straightened out.

Brown is only there because he does play more physical than Lewis but Lewis is the better corner.

Lewis is probably a better FS too.
Yeah - inexplicably we seem to value physicality over actual ball skills for secondary players. Go figure... :)

That's fine - but I don't cry about Heath.

Nonstop complaining about a certain player KIND OF sounds like crying. Maybe it’s simply a biased agenda.

Heath has gotten burned far too many times, but he is a maximum effort guy, and a hard hitter. While some of the coaching decisions SEEM like head scratchers at times, I’d have to go with them over internet experts the majority (more than 50%) of the time. No offense.

Well, you won't find me in this thread until this last page and I am definitely not whining!

Let me preface by saying that I do not watch Dallas game film and that is why I am asking instead of proclaiming, but it seems to me that when Darian Thompson gets playing time, he is playing pretty well.

I know he is primarily Woods' backup, but he does seem to be tough against the run and it seems that he might be better against the pass than Heath. Let's just say when Heath went down, I was not at all afraid when DT took his place.

For those that do go back and review the game film, what are your thoughts on DT getting more time and possibly starting opposite Woods?

He is no super star, but he actually has played slightly better than in the past.

Hard to tell but it does seem like Woods might have been there to make a play if Wentz throws it lower and more out in front. Thanks.

Both Chido and Heath need to be replaced. They’re good guys but don’t belong on an NFL roster.

Thompson is a player I mentioned several times this off-season because I thought he might be a good player.

He had started 16 games in 2017 for the Giants at FS and I thought he might be better if he played SS because he has good size but limited range.

This preseason he played FS and was decent in coverage but not good against the run.

In the 1 game he started this season with Woods out, he was solid but both Woods and Heath have more range.

The real potential for an upgrade is rookie Donovan Wilson. He had 3 INTs in the preseason and is a big hitter.

Do you guys notice how much better our defense plays wirh Jourdan Lewis is playing? It's no coincidence that he always makes a few plays whenever his number is called..I like him starting over Awuzie but that's just me.

The goal is to help where needed, and the only way to do that is for the safety to make a choice. If he doesn't, he won't be able to help either side. He can't just stay in the middle and wait for the ball to be thrown then expect to get to the receiver before the ball does.

You make the choice as late as possible. Very easy to cover both of the guys running free before the ball was thrown. A couple yards to the left and Heath makes the tackle, maybe prevents the catch.
