Calls I would make tomorrow (and why)

I'm not suggesting we make all these acquisitions; only suggesting these are the calls/inquiries I would make tomorrow as the GM of the Cowboys to try to improve the roster.

Call #1
New York Jets - Jamal Adams. The Jets seem to be subtly following the Dolphins tanking philosophy (shopping Leonard Williams and Robby Anderson). There are very few times in the NFL when a young, premier player is available and is a position of need for you. Jamal Adams is the safety this fan base has been clamoring for since Darren Woodson. He's 24, would have a $3.5M cap hit next season and has a 5th year option for 2021. My guess is his value is somewhere between Minkah Fitzpatrick (plus a 4th and a 7th for a 1st, 5th, and 6th) and Jalen Ramsey (two 1st round picks and a 4th). Nice things are expensive and if the Jets aren't being unreasonable, Adams would be an ideal solution to this defense's Achilles heel.

Call #2
Hold the line Joe Douglas - Leonard Williams. The Cowboys allegedly already inquired about Williams and likely felt the price was too high. I'd call again and monitor the situation all the way to the Tuesday deadline. The Jets are looking beyond this year and getting a pick or two now beats the 2021 compensatory pick they will get for Leonard Williams.

Call #3
Tampa Bay Buccaneers - O.J. Howard. This is a move for now and later. He would be a great complimentary piece to the weapons Dak has now. We like 12 personnel and Howard is a match-up issue and would be valuable on seam routes. He'd also allow the team to have a ready-to-go #1 TE if Witten decides to hang them up after this year.

Call #4
Denver Broncos - Justin Simmons. The Broncos are 2-6 and are most likely looking towards next season. Simmons is a talented safety. He's been targeted 21 times and only given up 10 completions (47.6% rate), and has 2 picks and 38 tackles before today's game. We supposedly loved him in the 2016 draft and ended up taking Charles Tapper 4 picks after the Broncos took Simmons. He is a pending free agent so that's one more contract to be worked out, but like Adams, he would address a weakness for the team.

Call #5
Arizona Cardinals - Patrick Peterson. Okay, calm down and read the whole thing before replying. Peterson is still an elite cornerback. When you have a shutdown corner, it gives you so much flexibility defending the rest of the offensive weapons. He's under contract for next season ($12.3M) so he's not just a one-year rental. He will be an expensive acquisition though. The Cardinals aren't going anywhere but they love Pat Pete and will not move on from him easily. My biggest motivation for this phone call lies elsewhere. I would love to add a player of his caliber but more than anything, my intent is to drive up the price for the Eagles. I don't want to see him in Philadelphia, but if they have their heart set on him, I want them to give up as much as possible.

Again, I'm not saying make ALL these trades. I'm saying kick the tires and see what it would take. None of these are dire so there is zero need to overpay.

Bennett was a minimal risk move. You're taking a chance on a proven veteran who the Patriots felt was not needed in their quest to make yet another Super Bowl run. He was mainly acquired to address the need created by Tyrone Crawford's injury, so in essence was maintaining the talent level. We need to make a move to improve the talent or I fear we will come up short of our ultimate goal.

Nice post but I think #1 is a pipe dream. #3 won’t happen because Witt coming back buys two more drafts to find his replacement as I think he plays at min this year and next. #5 would be too expensive and not a real necessity. I will say I love #2 and #4 but don’t see it happening since this front office always seems to think what they have is better than what’s out there.

Teams that are rebuilding and know the season is lost are most likely looking to trade vets with expiring contract and/or dump salary. It makes no sense for a rebuilding team to trade off young players they can build around. That's why players like Adams would cost way too much, it would be more of an overpay than some FA signings. The boys need to draft players like Adams and Howard. The safety from Denver might be okay. Williams at a 3rd I'd consider but taking a chance of only having him for half a season.

Usually the case. Dolphins moving on from Fitzpatrick in year 2 of his 5 year deal shows things are changing. Also, lots of buzz that Adams wants out of New York.

Doesn't mean it will happen, only suggesting that it can.

Good post...I want call number 2. Give me control of the LOS on both sides of the ball and I'm a happy guy. Wanted ET29 but the team flaked so no way I see them paying Adams or giving up picks for him. Good player but draft capital would be too much.

Absolutely agree calls need to be made. As constructed this team isn’t good enough to compete with the big boys. In the NFC alone we are maybe the 4th best team (SF, GB, NO). And I’m not sure we would beat Seattle or the Rams in the playoffs.

I'm not wasting my time trying to deal for OJ Howard.

I'm going all in on defense, and first thing Monday morning I'm calling about Denico Autry, Justin Simmons, and Vic Beasley.

Vic Beasley.
Was going to be Call #6 but I thought 5 was already pushing it with this crowd. Beasley would be a very nice pick up.

I just wonder if this team has any clue of a realistic Randy Gregory return or not. If he's coming back this season, the team will get great reps at RDE between Quinn, Bennett, and Gregory.

Simmons is a ball hawking type of safety with 9 INT's since 2016. We definitely need more of that, but we might already have it in Donovan Wilson.

but we might already have it in Donovan Wilson.

dangerous thinking IMO and one of the reasons this Front Office fails.

The safety play right now is bad to subpar. Wilson appears to be healthy now but appears to be the 4th safety behind Heath, Woods, and Darian Thompson. He'd likely be 5th or on the Practice Squad if Frazier didn't get hurt.

When Heath has been hurt they have played Darian even though he's more of a Free and Donovan is the supposed back-up at Strong.

I really like Wilson and think he'll contribute before it's all over, but if he can't get on the field over these guys, he must not be picking up his assignments.

Cooper, Quinn, and Bennett. Seems like this line is past its expiration date.
Of those 3 trades, Cooper is the only one where we gave up any significant value. The team was also fairly desperate at the time.

Bennett and Quinn were low-risk trades. Quinn has proven to be a good one.

We gave up as much for Quinn and Bennett as we did for Bene Benwikere so I do like the improvement.

At this stage in the season, just roll with who you have. Keep the draft picks. Unless some guy is cheap like Bennett, I would forget it.
