The Dallas Cowboys bolstered their pass rush when they traded for Michael Bennett this past week but the reality is it was already pretty darn good.
We expected more of the Dallas Cowboys pass-rush this season, didn’t we? With 17 team sacks through the first seven weeks of the 2019 NFL season, they are tied with the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans for 17th in the NFL.

For a unit that boasts DeMarcus Lawrence, Robert Quinn, and a pretty formidable supporting cast, finishing anywhere outside of the top-10 seems like a failure, by most fans’ standards. But even though they are on pace for no more than 39 (last season’s total), they are really having a better pass-rushing season than the numbers indicate.

Its not consistent

quinn cant be the only consistent guy

Quinn is unbelievable.

D Law has to start producing.

Overall they have upside but not enough production.

I'm done making excuses for this team. They have the guys to get the job done but they don't get the job done.

Quinn is the only guy on that side of the ball i'm happy with this year. The rest have underachieved.

Who is stopping the run? Howard was clipping almost 5 yards a pop before the Eagles left the running game to Wentzing out. I see they change game plans vs. the Bills.

True. Im hoping we are about to return to form and get hot. Im hoping we peak at the right time and this defense becomes the top 5 defense I was expecting this year. It will be interesting to see how MB contributes.

I wouldn't call a pass rush that can go from top 5 at best to top 30 at best a "good" pass rush. They have the PLAYERS for a good pass rush, but they don't have the scheme or the will of a good pass rush

they are 17th in sacks, that is low for a team with Dlaw and Quinn but will get better if Quinn stays healthy.

I mostly agree but I think Tank has been fine. He’s still ranking in the top 5 or top 10 of most relevant pass rush statistics while occupying all the double teams

It freakin' should be, but it's not.

They have been unable to incorporate any type of effective blitz packages for years.

Just show blitzes for goodness sakes, something, anything different. I don't know maybe look at how other clubs do it.

Tank and Quinn are seeing some of the most double teams in the NFL between 27% and 29% of the time. Yet, they are winning at an equally high rate between 24% and 33% of the time.

What does this mean? It means our Boys are forcing opponents to keep extra players in to protect the passer, and the opponents are still getting beat. Better yet, it’s allowing the Boys to mount an effective pass rush without dedicating too many extra players in the blitz.

It's a great chess move by Dallas because they get to keep extra players in coverage while opponents are keeping extra players in protection. That right there tells a much better story than what those misleading team sack totals are, or Tank isn't playing at a high level as Quinn. One isn't good without the other, period.
