I'm no JG fan but have a hard time faulting him on this one. Even if Austin had a good return I have little doubt there would have been a flag screwing up field position even worse. Our special teams kick returning sucks.
I think your confusing two different things

The issue wasn't what was right or wrong. The issue is Tavon doing what the staff told him and then Garret throwing him under the bus when Tavon literally did what the staff told him to do

Yeah I would fault JG. This is exactly how you loose your locker room

Especially considering JG has been a walk-around HC for years. This is exactly the situation where having a coach who doesn't have to worry about calling plays on offense or defense should benefit you. JG should have been discussing this with the ST coach while the Vikings were still running offensive plays.
Seriously. If you're not calling the offense or defense, and you have this kind of error on ST, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

It's LOL bad.

The tweet is hard to read, but doesn’t Holley say that O’Quinn lied to JG about the fact he told Austin to fair catch? How was JG to know if this is the case?

no worries. I was just trying to rack my brain and figure out where I said that!

Sorry again, its really weird it did that. It was a quick throwaway post and the only thing I can think of is that it was as software glitch.

The real poison is Jerry and Stephen. Add in overrated Will McClay as well.
Complaining about the Jones family is just as futile as complaining about the seasons changing. There is nothing that can be done about it. Jerry will give the ownership to another Jones, most likely Stephen. Stephen will give ownership to another Jones when the time comes. So stop complaining about it. There are other things that can be fixed so spend your time better complaining about that. I recommend your ire be focused on the coaching.

They should cut Tavon tomorrow. He's worthless. One flash play every 8 months and he already used it up this year. He'll pull a something somewhere muscle and be on the sideline tweeting at some point this year.

Who gives a crap which coach told him what, he had 17 seconds. If he runs around for an extra 15 -20 yards they'd be left with 5 seconds. They have lots more issues trying to figure out why the defense goes into these collapses every few games. Work on that.

With all this mess stirred up I predict a W for DAL vs DET.

that is a chance you have to take, odds of a return for td is better than a hail mary.
Dak has never had a successful HM.
The other thing is go all out to block the punt.
But Dallas did neither one.

What are we averaging, 6 yards a return on the season? Odds are higher Zeke breaks a long TD run. :lmao:

"T'ain't Garrett's fault" sounds like BS to me.

This was an obvious situation for the HC to *assert* a clock management strategy. O'Quinn may have told Austin, but that doesn't mean he wasn't directed to so so by Garrett in the first place.

Is it really O'Quinn's responsibility to make clock management decisions?
Incompetent assignment of responsibilities, if true. Garrett's fault.

If O'Quinn took it on himself to make a clock management call, in *contradiction* to policy, he should be canned immediately.

He's still here, and there hasn't been a peep about firing or disciplining him from Garrett. Tells you all you need to know about who really made the call.

Gonna play devil's advocate here, guess what if Austin returns it and fumbles now who gets the blame Garrett but the entire sideline was there for Austin for a big return!

Not everyone thinks that winning the lottery makes buying lottery tickets the *smart* call.

Regardless of coverage, Austin had a free run upfield with a guaranteed clock stoppage after. He should have just been told to take normal care relative to the coverage units not to put himself in a situation to get hammered and lose the ball, and not to waste time running laterally unless he was confident it would pay off with significantly increased yardage.

Catch the ball and head upfield to get the yardage that was there. If that turns into a fumble, oh well. Any player could fumble with the ball in their hands on any play. That risk is baked into the game.
