The Dallas Cowboys have lost their total identity

Hey. I don’t know this as fact, but this is what I strongly believe is the reason we haven’t had the type of success we expect since Jimmy Johnson left.
The Dallas Cowboys have lost their total identity and have been constantly trying to recreate some other ideas, schemes and structure from other franchises. It all started with Parcells coming in and trying to rebuild us in the forms of his NY Giants and NE Patriots teams. Switched us to a 3-4 defense, nicknamed players using the names of his former players, and even wasted a first round pick by drafting the son of his former player. We wasted years and drafts trying to make the conversion with little success.
During the latter years of the Romo era we were busy trying to emulate New England and New Orleans by using committees at RB and WR. Even tried this again with Dak last season before we traded for Cooper.
Now we are trying to emulate Seattle with Richard’s defensive philosophies that don’t seem to be working consistently. Especially in the defensive backfield. All that tall, rangy, cornerbacks with length bs ain’t what it’s cracked up to be. Our cbs don’t track the ball, stop completions or snag interceptions. It ain’t working. And the smallest cb we have seems to be the Big Dog our there when he’s out there playing. The whole Marrinelli Tampa 2 reincarnated crap ain’t working either.
We need to get back to having our own identity and doing things exclusively our way and stop being copy cats. We’ve always had our own individual identity during both championship eras and were extremely successful season after season. As all championship teams are. Winners don’t emulate other winners. They find ways to win and outplay teams using unique schematics and philosophies that are difficult to figure out.
Long story short. We need new coaching and a unique identity, style and philosophy.

Good post, 2016 team was actually getting true football identity but by that time Romo was getting injury prone but if he was managed right and coached right that team was special. I’m my opinion Romo was almost coached out of his natural instincts to make plays by moving the pocket. He was done the same way Dak is being done. Garrett loves to attempt fitting square pegs into round holes. He’s always trying to make a quarterback something he’s not. We haven’t had a decent 6-5 230 lb quarterback since Troy. Oh yeah. I guess we can say Bledsoe was halfway decent at that time. But needless to say that neither Romo or Dak are built to be stationary pocket quarterbacks and that’s what Garrett tries to build. He doesn’t coach up the strengths. He attempts to force his ideas onto the quarterback. It rarely works.

Teams can run the 4-3 or the 3-4. They can play one gap or two gap. They can play the two deep or single high. There's really not much room for anything else.

Identity comes from style of play. Physical or finesse? Style of play comes from player acquisition. Player acquisition comes from ideology. Do you want your linebackers to be speedsters or thumpers?

The problem with the Garrett era is he hasn't really committed to a matching style of play, on both sides of the ball. Our defense is small and quick. Meaning they were meant to play with a lead. But our offense (a lot of runs on first down) is a ground and pound chew up clock offense. How can a ground and pound team capture the lead, so our defense can play with the lead?

They can if they play mistake free football. But Garrett is not a disciplinarian. So not only does this team not have an identity, but Garrett is not a good fit for the little identity they do have. Which leads to a lot of hype, but no glory.

I’m not disagreeing with this point, but simply want to highlight that the reason our small, quick defense looked so good last season is because the Cowboys usually won Time of Possession and the D was still fresh in the 4th quarter to make plays and get the ball back for the offense to close out games. ANY defense is at its best playing with a lead. Our small, quick defense starts to fold up when they’re on the field too much.

Well, that... and they can’t tackle anymore. Or force turnovers.

They don’t. But I mean who does? Patriots do and that’s it. I’m down with having a plan and succeeding at it but this team just doesn’t do that. They have nothing. In 2016 I commended them for trying to do what the rest of the league wasn’t doing which was build your team around the run game and keep your defense off the field. I don’t know what happened to that plan.

The game has changed, so teams have changed to better utilize the rules.

And so forth

The game changed beause the NFL couldnt get its face of the league Peyton Manning a SB. NE would destroy him in the playoffs. Patriots almost beheaded Manning and his WRs in the 2003 playoffs. In 2004 the NFL implemented the first round of outrageous rules for QB hits and pass interference.

This ended the league view on RBs.

Point is the Cowboys have changed probably the least out of all 32 teams. And its probably hurt them more then any team.

That 2003 NE/Colts game was one of the most brutal games i have watch a QB and group of WRs manhandled.

Pete Caroll is, was, and always will be the architect and reason for Seattle's defensive success. He's the best defensive backs coach in the league and one of the best ever. Richard was just there. The legion of boom was all Caroll. The quicker people realize this, the quicker we can move on.
