Did Beasley's rap career hurt his effort on the field?

This is more of players needing to do what makes fans "comfortable." Jaylon's been nothing but a fan comfort since he got here, saying all the right things, doing what needs to be done to work his way back. It's true he's had a few "what the ..." moments on the field this year but you can lump in LVE and others with that too. LVE got married before the season if I recall correctly. Should he have remained pure for the love of football? Lol.

I told you our players see football as a hobby. They're too focused on other things. Firing JG won't be enough to save this team. Not surprised at this. *shrug*.

We all marveled at the attitude and spirit Jaylon Smith displayed as rehabbed one of the most difficult to overcome injuries imaginable for a football player. How can you not love a guy like that. You can't.

But where is his mind today, amidst a pretty lackluster year from the just-paid middle linebacker.

I've heard it mentioned by numerous on-air radio people locally - Broaddus, Archer, Dennis, and others - that Jaylon routinely conducts business meetings at The Star before and after practice. He puts a ton of time everyday into growing his upstart eyeglasses and massage ventures.

We're not talking once a week. It's almost every day, openly in front of his teammates at the Cowboys facilities. These meetings are not quick updates, but rather involved conference room discussions with mulitiples of people that can last for hours.

Freshly paid in advance of the end of his rookie deal, has football become a mere hobby to support his greater business interests?

I love an entrepreneurial mind. Always fascinating people, they are. I also commend him for not squandering his money on depreciating garbage as is traditionally typical of young millionaire athletes. But I also believe in prioritization and focus, especially toward where your bread is being buttered the most.

The Cowboys deserve 99% of his professional focus right now after paying him handsomely when they didn't yet have to. Granted, I probably wouldn't look askew at this if his play on the field was better. It'd probably be more of an interesting tidbit if it was.

But Jaylon looks like he's on roller skates a lot, over-pursuing plays and getting roasted in coverage. Combine that with iffy play from Vander Esch, too, and it looks like we have a couple of damaged goods at linebacker who aren't ready, or perhaps fully committed, to be great NFL linebackers.

Jaylon's effort and attitude on Sundays is not in question. But what about his preparation from Monday through Saturday?
Anything Jaylon Smith is on Jerry. Paying a guy after one good season is ridiculous, though so Jerry. I bet there are a ton of players using Cowboys facilities for all kinds of personal reasons. I have no faith in the team getting any better as long ad the Jones family continues to run day to day ops.

key words to me were "before and after practice". he's free to do whatever he see's fit outside of football regardless of the optics.

Everything I know of Jaylon I highly doubt that it's an effort or focus situation, somethings just off with the whole defense.
What you said.

I wonder what the answer to the question, "What do you want to do when you grow up?" would be from the majority of the kids on the playground today.

Back in the olden days it would have been, "I want to score the Super Bowl winning TD" or "I want to score the Stanley Cup clinching goal".

I wonder if now it would more often than not be, "I want to get rich playing ball".

In my antiquated way of thinking, during the season you are spending your time working on your profession and resting/relaxing/recovering from that work so you can do some more work.

It's one thing to meet with your agent on your day off to sign an endorsement deal or whatnot but quite another to be involved in the actual running of a separate business or two.

Especially since the game is a major factor in why one even has these business opportunities in the first place.

His football hurts more from the lack of good interior Defensive linemen than his business meetings.

Its business. Jerrah is ok with it. Stop hating on the player. Brady does the same thing with TB-12.

...wow! ...just wow! .. Why would Jerry and Co allow that? Your there for football, its yer job. In any case your there to improve on yourself. In return make a better team outcome.

.....I cant even get my mind around this. Im losing more respect for this clown organization. Let this be known, Dallas wont sniff another SB until the Jones sell the team.

He spends his free time focused on his business.

How is that different from a player spending their free time chasing skirts or playing Fortnite?

If you have to ask that, you never caught one of those skirts. :D

Brady did it after winning multiple Super Bowls. That's a bit different.

And since Jerry is the one and only incurable malignancy of this franchise, he's not the barometer for anything.

Business ventures are fine, but don't conduct them at your real job.

Jaylon was stumbling in the open field trying to tackle people early in the season, but he seems to have a lot better footing and control the last couple weeks.

You're a smart guy, Erod, so use Occam's razor here. Is that more likely to be caused by Jaylon cutting back on massage business meetings since November, or by health issues he and the team aren't disclosing that are beginning to heal.

Brady didn't do this until he'd won multiple Super Bowls. He's got a few skins on the wall.

Jaylon is playing like junk on a stick right now, and hasn't established himself in this league.

I didn't say Brady hadn't earned the right to do whatever he wants, I said it doesn't seem to have distracted him. Jaylonis

you’re describing permission to be distracted after delivering. I’m saying it’s not necessarily a distraction. Everyone’s got businesses and commitments. If anything doing it at the star may make things easier since he doesn’t have to worry about being late lol

so true. when the d-line allows the o-line to get on the linebackers, it's hard to beat them.

If all this is true (and I have no reason to doubt you) then Jerry could put an end to it, right now, by cutting him

yes it would cost him some guaranteed money and a short term cap hit but the reality is, the rest of the team would get the message real quick.
I wonder why just once, he doesn't try something drastic like that to send a message.

Kind of a Curvin Richards thing. Jaylon has way higher ceiling than Curvin Richards but still, I Think the long term benefit might outweigh the short term loss.

I get your point but the marriage analogy is a bit of stretch, don't you think?

I mean--if LVE was having his wife drop by the Star before and after practice for conjugals, then maybe you'd have a better analogy in light of this Jaylon Smith discussion we're having.

And Tom's performance didn't drop off either. He kept producing at an extraordinarily high level.
Referring to your comment in the OP about how if Jaylon was producing maybe this doesn't even get noticed......

I'd prefer he spent his free time at an adult establishment like Pacman Jones.
