A look at our last 3 drafts is not so good

Not at all. Taco is gone. Wasted a first rounder there. Williams has not been good for 2 years now. Can't play G. I would be shocked if they re-up with Chido. He has been terrible. Hill has done zero as a rookie. Trading a 1 for Cooper will look terrible if they don't sign him. Had him for 2 years and what??? It is very fair to look at these drafts and doubt the output.
Not to mention , had they not traded for Amari, we would have most likely had tanked, had a higher draft slot, and Clapper would have been canned. We could have been with new staff and better draft picks...on our way to fixing this ship and possibly deeper playoff/ SB run...Instead we wasted another year ...and still haven't fired Garrett....

...its not even a 50/50 margin. Its more like 30/70. Which means for every 2 players that are good, there's 5 or 6 that are not. I agree with bullet. Need to draft better.

Im not a football guru, in any shape or form. Maybe hire another head to co-op with McClay. 2 heads better than one.

One of the good things that has happened for this team during the last near decade has been the addition of Will McClay and the improvements he has brought to the Cowboys’ drafts. In fact, Drafts from 2013- 2016 provided not only talent, but also hope that our future would be bright with continued acquisition of quality talent.

But looking at the last 3 drafts- 2017, 2018 and 2019, the cupboard is not looking as stocked. Let’s look at those drafts and what players have been big additions.

2017 (3 players still with team, 2 consistent starters)
1. Taco Charlton- DE- in Miami after proving very little here.
2. Chidobe Awuzie- CB- has been up and down, not having a good year this year.
3. Jourdan Lewis- CB- has shown flashes but also inconsistent
4. Ryan Switzer- WR- drafted as a slot receiver and punt returner, only lasted 1 yr here. Been with two teams since.
6. Xavier Woods- S- another DB who has had some good moments but has not stayed healthy and lacks consistency and big play ability.
6. Marquez White- WR- no longer in NFL- on an XFL roster
7. Joey Ivie- DT- been with 5 different NFL teams- currently on Titans practice squad.
7. Noah Brown-WR- has talent but has twice been on IR including this year.
7. Jordan Carrell- DT- no longer in NFL

2018 (6 players still with the team, 3 starters)
1. Leighton Vander Esch- LB- great rookie season by a injury riddled disappointment in year two. Still think he’s a stud though.
2. Connor Williams- G- IMO, Williams is on bust alert. His rookie year he got manhandled. He has been injured but at best has only shown a few moments of quality. Going into next year, he better start showing something more.
3. Michael Gallup- WR- has been an absolute stud. A future star. Best draft pick of the last 3 years.
4. Dorance Armstrong- DE- has had some good moments but has been inconsistent and hurt.
4. Dalton Schultz- TE- has been competent at best in spot duty. The Witten return may have stunted his development but he hasn’t shown much.
5. Mike White- QB- a complete bust. Perhaps the biggest bust of the last 3 drafts. Is on Jets practice squad.
6. Chris Covington- LB- has twice been on practice squad, after being waived twice.
6. Cedric Wilson- WR- currently on IR. Has shown some potential but has been inconsistent.
7. Bo Scarborough- RB- cut last summer. Bounced around 4 teams before Lions signed him. He’s played ok there in 3 starts including one against us.

2019 (including Cooper gives us only 1 starter and only two more guys on active roster)
1. First round pick trades to acquire WR Amari Cooper which has been a great trade.
2. Trysten Hill- DT- BUST- plain and simple.
3. Connor McGovern- G- been on IR all year. Don’t know what he is yet.
4. TonyPollard- RB- showed great potential in preseason but has been used sparingly and been hurt of late. Best player in this draft for us so far.
5. Michael Jackson- DB- waived in Aug. Currently on Lions practice squad.
5. Joe Jackson- DE- has played in 5 games this year- rarely on game day roster
6. Donovan Wilson-S- played in 9 games this year, making only 2 tackles.
7. Mike Weber- RB- currently on practice squad. Hasn’t played.
7. Jalen Jelks- DE- placed on IR- injured all year.

If we include Amari Cooper as a 2019 first rounder, we have selected 27 players these last three drafts, only 7 are starters, 9 of the 27 have consistently remained on the active roster, 7 are no longer with the team and 3 are no longer in the NFL.

IMO- Our drafts the last 3 years have not produced the quality we needed and have likely contributed to this year’s decline in record.
The upcoming 2020 draft will be very important to helping upgrade this team.

If an NFL team is averaging two starters per draft, they are doing well.

You cannot expect a team to hit on a high percentage of picks. This is like baseball, two out of seven is very good.

The best stat to judge a draft class would be on snaps taken by the class. This would allow you to see the contribution made to the team as a whole.

How do you think all the teams that passed on Lamar Jackson feel right now....???!!! Lots of " Experts" from front offices and networks, etc. Many had him as a WR...or Slash type player. Ravens look unstoppable....

Good post. Drafting isn’t as amazing as some make it out to be around here. It’s not terrible but not great either.

Yep. The only different now is we usually hit on our 1st round picks. But after that, we are still terrible. Also, Byron and Taco were terrible 1st rd picks. Especially Taco.

The 2015 draft was god awful. Especially picking Gregory and Chaz with higher rd picks.

We have zero depth on this team and that is due to drafting.

Well, as long as you put it that way!

As far as McClay is concerned, he assembles the board, he doesn't have much to do with what positions emphasis is put on. We don't know what he would do if he was really in charge.

I would count Cooper as a pick because that's what they gave up for him and think the two best picks are at WR in the last 3 years.

I don't have all of the other teams drafts as a contrast so I don't know how 7 starters stacks up. That's roughly 25% of the 25 starters in the last 3 years. And only 9 of the 53 on the active roster and that seems low but then again nothing to compare so Bullet, since I've mentioned that twice in just one sentence, how about doing that for every team and we'll see you back here after the first of the year? Nice work, amigo.

I do not think highly of this brain trust's ability to evaluate talent and think the accent is on potential too much because the GM is an optimist. Optimists sell themselves too easily and this one thinks a player gets better just putting that Star on or paying them more money. When the GM states that the QB will play better because he's getting paid better, that pretty much sums up a large part of the problem. So, the draft becomes even more critical because I cannot think of one player that has played better after getting paid better in that 3 year span. I can go back further and not think of any. And that's not a slam against players, they'll play for incentive but reward already realized?

Draft is a crapshoot that can lean in your favor if you have competent scouts and coaches that know what they are looking at. Involves some luck as well.

2013 they land Frederick, but the Vikings had sources tell them that Dallas wanted Patterson and that's why they traded ahead of us. Remember, Dooley was our new WR coach that year and CP was from Tennessee, the team Dooley just came from.

2014 Martin was not our #1 choice going into that draft. Barr, Donald and Shazier were all slotted ahead of him. Shazier goes the pick before the Cowboys and well the infamous Jerry/Manziel vs rest of room for Martin discussion occurred. Traded up for Law which paid off big time out 3 years later.

2015 we thought was a bust in the first for years until they threw Jones back at corner. Outside of that pick, wasn't a pretty draft.

2016 was the draft that retooled the team on the fly. Zeke was originally a can't miss RB for Romo. Then they take the super risk on Clear Eye then strike luck with Prescott. Even though they didn't want him over a few other QBs like Lynch and Cook to name a few.

The biggest thing that frustrates me is that our bust rate would be near zero if we just stuck to the formula in the first two rounds

-Freak athlete
-Power 5 school
-Doesn't suck at playing football.

If you look at McClay, he's been following these guidelines. Look at the guys he wanted in past drafts, and the guys we ended up with instead.

-TJ Watt 1st round 2017 (Wisconsin/95th percentile athlete/12 sacks in his first year at OLB). We drafted Taco (failed the athleticism test; 47th percentile athlete) instead because of Marinelli.

-Justin Reid 2nd round 2018 (Stanford/95th percentile/1st team All-Pac 12). We drafted Connor Williams instead (failed the athleticism test; 68th percentile athlete) because Jerry was still shellshocked by Garrett's mismanagement of Chaz Green in the Atlanta game.

-Juan Thornhill 2nd round 2019 (Virginia/98th percentile athlete/1st team all ACC) over Trysten Hill (failed the "sucks at playing football" test; 3 sacks his senior year and rode the pine half the time), because Marinelli talked them into it again.

We still would have missed on Chido using that formula (Colorado/88th percentile athlete/2x second-team PAC 12 with pretty good tape), but the hit rate following those guidelines is outstanding.

Heck, look at McClay's reputed 1st round short list for the 2018 draft:

Vita Vea (Washington, 1st team all Pac 12, didn't do enough Combine drills to qualify for a SPARQ score, but playing on UW's punt coverage team at 340 lbs is good enough to check the "freak athlete" box for me).

LVE (Boise State is big enough, 97th percentile athlete, 1st team All Mountain West in his 1st year starting and ended the universe in the Oregon bowl game).

DJ Moore (Maryland, 97th percentile athlete, had 1,000 receiving yards in his last year with literally 8 different QBs).

All of those guys have proven that they can not just be good at the NFL level, but be absolute studs. LVE's sophomore year obviously didn't go the way we wanted, but his rookie year proved he's got All-Pro talent. Vea started slow, but he is top 10 in Pass Rush Win Rate among DTs and is a USDA certified Bad Dude against the run. DJ Moore is 4th in the league in receiving yards with Kyle Allen throwing him the football.

So if anything, I think the FO is even better at drafting than most fans realize. Most of their misses occur when they are talked out of their guys by our questionable coaching staff.

The last few years I have been disappointed in our Drafts for example when we took Taco I really wanted Watt and last year
the Tristen Hill pick shocked me I wanted the Safety. I'm thinking they need to quit trying to find diamond in the ruffs and take
solid players that you feel strongly will contribute right away. I will go one step further any player you take in the first round

should be able to start immediately and bump someone else out of the starting lineup immediately and this is my opinion.

Overall, I would consider this an excellent assessment of the good, the bad, and the ugly. My only point of contention would be with Connor Williams' assessment. I think he's been better than he's being described here.

But I agree 100% that this team's sub-par drafts over the past 3 years have really hurt and have played a role in this team's struggles.

We all wanted to talk about how well the Cowboys did for the past several years, especially in the 1st round, and they did. But if we're going to praise those drafts, we can be equally critical of their recent failures.

First and foremost the Taco debacle. I hope that Garrett and Marinelli, the two guys that overruled scouts to draft him, pay the price for that mistake with their jobs after this season.

I'm optimistic that once the current coaches are cleared out, McClay and the scouts will again be allowed to do their jobs and we can return to better drafts.

A player has to actually try and fail to qualify for bust.

That might be your definition, mine differs. When the guy can't even get active on gamedays despite injuries and the team sucking at the position? Yeah, he's a bust until he proves otherwise. I went the "patience" route with Taco, and I was right and they were wrong. And now the same people "don;t want to talk about it anymore" and want to "Move on".

And I don't get it, this was Marinelli's guy and his favorite DL was......Nick Hayden.

"Time waits for no one..."

I blame the people who thought it was a good idea to ask Old Man River what he thought in the first place.

I am not leaving Trysten Hill for dead yet. He played about a dozen snaps vs the Bears and got two tackles, and he played about another dozen snaps vs the Bills and got a stuff and TFL. There's still a pulse on the EKG. He's already shown more in limited playing time his rookie year than Taco did as a rookie; that dude was dead on arrival.

2018 the exception as first 3 picks all starters.

And 2017 3 of the picks are regulars or starters on defense. Awuzie, Lewis and Woods. Not an awful draft but Taco being a bust prevented it From being a great draft.

2019 was all about Cooper and Hill being a bust. Now if we don’t keep Cooper then it was a total waste.
