A look at our last 3 drafts is not so good

Yeah, the drafting is overrated. This last one? What in the world were they thinking? One player to inject to your team? The rest were IR or avg to junko. That’s what Cle used to do...and how they became Cle. It’s poor drafting. I can’t stand this FO right now...The knuckleheads had a chance and pulled that magic act again. It’s the culture of celebrity. It’s too much...it’s a star oriented system, not a winning team one. It’s all about Dak selling sleep mattresses on my apps,or Lawrence and Zeke commanding top dollar or else, then playing like else when you do. All the focus is on the superficial surrounding aspects of the sport. You can’t change Dallas being glitter, but you can have more success if the Jones family less involved in team football related matters. Own the club do all your PR jazz...dance around on field with your little umbrella like Tom Benson as much as you like...and let a GM and HC deal with the on field team.

You may be right. What’s your evaluation of them?
My evaluation of him is this is the 3rd straight season of him needing knee surgery and he's had 4 total knee surgeries in the last 3 seasons (2 NFL + last year at UT). Not a good attribute for someone that's only 22 years old to be this broken down.........

I don't see how McGovern doesn't take his job. He's injury prone and playing out of position. Even with his high draft status and speed I don't see him being a long term franchise starter

Every single one of those draft picks, other than Michael Gallup, are extremely flawed.

Conor Williams, Trysten Hill, Taco Charlton were considered mind boggling selections immediately. Your average fan knew the picks sucked. How do professionals who do this full time, miss so badly?

One of the good things that has happened for this team during the last near decade has been the addition of Will McClay and the improvements he has brought to the Cowboys’ drafts. In fact, Drafts from 2013- 2016 provided not only talent, but also hope that our future would be bright with continued acquisition of quality talent.

But looking at the last 3 drafts- 2017, 2018 and 2019, the cupboard is not looking as stocked. Let’s look at those drafts and what players have been big additions.

2017 (3 players still with team, 2 consistent starters)
1. Taco Charlton- DE- in Miami after proving very little here.
2. Chidobe Awuzie- CB- has been up and down, not having a good year this year.
3. Jourdan Lewis- CB- has shown flashes but also inconsistent
4. Ryan Switzer- WR- drafted as a slot receiver and punt returner, only lasted 1 yr here. Been with two teams since.
6. Xavier Woods- S- another DB who has had some good moments but has not stayed healthy and lacks consistency and big play ability.
6. Marquez White- WR- no longer in NFL- on an XFL roster
7. Joey Ivie- DT- been with 5 different NFL teams- currently on Titans practice squad.
7. Noah Brown-WR- has talent but has twice been on IR including this year.
7. Jordan Carrell- DT- no longer in NFL

2018 (6 players still with the team, 3 starters)
1. Leighton Vander Esch- LB- great rookie season by a injury riddled disappointment in year two. Still think he’s a stud though.
2. Connor Williams- G- IMO, Williams is on bust alert. His rookie year he got manhandled. He has been injured but at best has only shown a few moments of quality. Going into next year, he better start showing something more.
3. Michael Gallup- WR- has been an absolute stud. A future star. Best draft pick of the last 3 years.
4. Dorance Armstrong- DE- has had some good moments but has been inconsistent and hurt.
4. Dalton Schultz- TE- has been competent at best in spot duty. The Witten return may have stunted his development but he hasn’t shown much.
5. Mike White- QB- a complete bust. Perhaps the biggest bust of the last 3 drafts. Is on Jets practice squad.
6. Chris Covington- LB- has twice been on practice squad, after being waived twice.
6. Cedric Wilson- WR- currently on IR. Has shown some potential but has been inconsistent.
7. Bo Scarborough- RB- cut last summer. Bounced around 4 teams before Lions signed him. He’s played ok there in 3 starts including one against us.

2019 (including Cooper gives us only 1 starter and only two more guys on active roster)
1. First round pick trades to acquire WR Amari Cooper which has been a great trade.
2. Trysten Hill- DT- BUST- plain and simple.
3. Connor McGovern- G- been on IR all year. Don’t know what he is yet.
4. TonyPollard- RB- showed great potential in preseason but has been used sparingly and been hurt of late. Best player in this draft for us so far.
5. Michael Jackson- DB- waived in Aug. Currently on Lions practice squad.
5. Joe Jackson- DE- has played in 5 games this year- rarely on game day roster
6. Donovan Wilson-S- played in 9 games this year, making only 2 tackles.
7. Mike Weber- RB- currently on practice squad. Hasn’t played.
7. Jalen Jelks- DE- placed on IR- injured all year.

If we include Amari Cooper as a 2019 first rounder, we have selected 27 players these last three drafts, only 7 are starters, 9 of the 27 have consistently remained on the active roster, 7 are no longer with the team and 3 are no longer in the NFL.

IMO- Our drafts the last 3 years have not produced the quality we needed and have likely contributed to this year’s decline in record.
The upcoming 2020 draft will be very important to helping upgrade this team.

A very good post. Thanks. The Cowboy's recent draft prowess is a myth. They have made some bad mistakes over the past few years. Hill, Taco Chido and Williams were terrible picks. Very overrated draft output over the past few years.

I will add that Taco has been good for Miami. Here is a stat. He has as many sacks as Lawrence in about half the playing time. Rod Marinelli sucks. Period.

I just looked it up. Taco has 382 snaps this year. Lawrence 590. Plus Taco had to transition to another team.

Dallas is a backwater...

Far far to early for that.

Not at all. Taco is gone. Wasted a first rounder there. Williams has not been good for 2 years now. Can't play G. I would be shocked if they re-up with Chido. He has been terrible. Hill has done zero as a rookie. Trading a 1 for Cooper will look terrible if they don't sign him. Had him for 2 years and what??? It is very fair to look at these drafts and doubt the output.

in a silo, it may look bad, but how does this compare to other teams drafts, specially top teams.....you can't expect to hit on every draft pick, even have them on the team. my expectations are that the 1st round picks are can't miss...have to get a starter out of them and if lucky, then they are really good and can become stars...second round picks have to be eventual starters and big contributors. 3rd rounders are quality backups....subsequently its great to hit on a 3rd-7th round pick and get lucky and get a star...ala Dak or Gallup.

with that said, missing totally on a draft is what kills you. seems like this past year we probably missed badly, unless you include cooper's impact given we gave up our first.

2016 was suppose to be our highly regarded draft, with Zeke, Dak, Collins, Smith, and Brown. But with this year being a down year, some are starting to question that draft class.

Good depth is also important, not just starters.

OTOH, simply being a starter doesn't necessarily mean anything either. Even the Bengals have 22 starters.

For the record you are overly critical of the Cowboys last 3 drafts. As a reminder...

Starting %'s by Position and Round:

1st Round - OL (83%) LB (70%) TE (67%) DB (64%) QB (63%) WR (58%) RB (58%) DL (58%)
2nd Round - OL (70%) LB (55%) TE (50%) WR (49%) DB (46%) QB (27%) DL (26%) RB (25%)
3rd Round - OL (40%) TE (39%) LB (34%) DL (27%) WR (25%) DB (24%) QB (17%) RB (16%)
4th Round - DL (37%) TE (33%) OL (29%) LB (16%) WR(12%) DB (11%) RB (11%) QB (8%)
5th Round - TE (32%) DB (17%) WR (16%) OL (16%) DL (13%) RB (9%) LB (4%) QB (0%)
6th Round - TE (26%) OL (16%) DL (13%) WR (9%) DB (8%) RB (6%) LB (5%) QB (0%)
7th Round - DB (11%) OL (9%) QB (6%) WR (5%) DL (3%) LB (2%) RB (0%) TE (0%)

You can data mine all you like but Hill has been a healthy scratch almost all season. He also likes to sleep through meetings. Plus he was a total reach anyway. Does not bode well. Williams has almost 2 years. Personally they should have kept him at T. At G he has looked overmatched. Badly at times. He is not stout enough to play G. It is clear at this point.

A late 5th round pick can never really be a "bust"....let alone the biggest bust in 3 drafts.
Missing on 1 late 1st rounder is the equivalent of missing on 4 or 5 5th rounders all in the same year., value-wise.
Miss on a n early one and you can say that 4-5 5th rounders foes to 10-12.

The picks I regret the most so far on this list are Taco and Hill.
The opportunity cost was really high there. But Hill is only in year 1.

No team hits on 100% of picks so this exercise could be repeated with every team in the league. We'd probably be surprised that Dallas is actually better than most.

That said, we knew some of these picks were going to be a hard sell. Hill is the best example of this when we knew we needed safety help and guys like Adderley, Rapp, Thornhill were all on the board. He's a rookie and needs a bit of slack on the leash, but not a great start for him. The rest of this class isn't shaping up to be very strong.

Seems inevitable that this draft is shaping up to be a defensive one - that unit is going to and needs to look different next year. #riphotboyz

Good point.
And to be fair, it’s still too early to judge 2019 and probably 2018 as well. But 2017- I think can be fairly judged.
