I could research this but I thought I would just ask the questions instead.
The questions are in regards to making it to the Super Bowl even if they didn't win.
Question #1:
How many assistant coaches that were promoted to Head Coach of the same team made it to the Super Bowl (Since 1980).
Not assistants that departed and then returned as HC. Just assistants directly promoted to HC.
George Seifert comes to mind.
Question #2:
When looking at team/HC combos and the 1st time that combo got to the Super Bowl, how often was that HC hired as an up and coming coach vs a recycled NFL Head Coach vs College Head Coach?
To clarify:
Jimmy: College HC
Belichick: Technically a recycled NFL HC; although that Cleveland situation was more on the owner than Belichick (They fired him after moving to Baltimore).
Sean McVay and Sean Payton: Up and coming types when hired by Rams/Saints.
Tom Coughlin: SB success as 2nd time NFL HC.
Pete Carroll: Both NFL and College HC before SB success with Seahawks.
